Brandon Watson squashes rumours that Windows Phone 7 apps will be incompatible with Windows Phone 8

image

The rumour that Windows Phone 8 will see a kernel transplant to the Windows 8 kernel is very strong, but accompanying that rumour is a second, connected one – that Windows Phone 8 will move to HTML5 and DirectX based apps, and that current Silverlight and XNA-based apps will be incompatible.

One proponent of the rumour is Eldar Murtazin, who tweeted:

eldarmurtazin Eldar Murtazin

WP8 os isnt compatible with wp7 on app level (u need to rewrite all apps). Thats another os core with metro ui…

Brandon Watson in a tweet made is pretty clear that this will not be the case, saying:

@eldarmurtazin Rewatch Mix11 keynote. We were pretty clear on this. Any app built today will run on next major Windows Phone version.

The news should reassure developers that all their effort will not be wasted when the next generation of Windows Phones come, and help continue the momentum of Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, which has added nearly 10000 apps this month so far.

It should also cast doubt on Eldar’s reliability, who’s anti-Windows Phone/Nokia utterings seems to be taken as fact these days.

More reason to not believe Eldar Murtazin.

  • Anonymous

If you flip a coin, you get a 50/50 chance. Eldar’s history suggests something in the low single-digits of success. At this point, it is better to believe everything opposite he says to be right.

    • Anonymous

But but but, he was sort of right that one time a while back.  That means we should continue to believe and give attention to everything he says.

Hahaha, schooled by Mr. Watson for talking rubbish.

This rumor seems so illogical to begin with. Since WP7 doesn’t even allow apps to be written in native code, why would apps written for a framework that’s sits on top of the OS be incompatible?

The only reason they wouldn’t be comparable is because MS chose not to port the framework which makes no sense since that would be a moronic move. When you read reviews about WP7 from site like The Verge, Engadget, etc. they all talk about how good the OS is and the apps being it’s only sore spot. So why would Microsoft throw out the 50k+ apps they have right now?

  • Anonymous

of course he is taken seriously in spite of a terrible track record.  There are too many in the tech press and the industry who want to see MS, and so any negative rumor will be believed because it supports their mind set. No amount of denials by MS will change the fact that people will still believe this. Just look at how many people accused MS of securities fraud and cooking the books when the released their quarterly results – EVERYBODY knows MS is a dying failure so those numbers just could not possibly be right

Just another reason not to listen to Eldar. He’s been hating on MS for years and has even said there is nothing to like about Nokia today.

  • Anonymous

Eldar is an idiot. I think his hate for WP and Nokia came after Nokia sent Russian authorities over to confiscate all of his stolen stuff: http://conversations.nokia.com/2010/07/07/legal-action-against-eldar-murtazin-official-statement/

“Mr. Murtazin has been very public about his possession of unauthorised Nokia property. Several weeks back, we formally requested the return of all unauthorized Nokia property from Mr. Murtazin and he declined to respond. As a result, we have contacted the Russian authorities to assist us in the return of all unauthorised Nokia property.”

I’ll see your rubbish and raise you facts.  Your move, Eldar.  ;)

seriously people thought microsoft would be so stupid to say “hey… develop for our platform… now we have 60k apps… but next year we will start all over 0″… i mean, it was logical what they were going to do…

well at least now people wont complain about it. and its showne how Eldar = idiot ;) and how he is someone who doesn’t know what he is talking about. I hope he is going to shut up.

what idiot would believe anything on twitter.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chuckwhit Chuck Whitaker

anyone with half a brain would have known this rumor was complete BS. Why would Microsoft build a marketplace only to rebuild because of an upgraded OS smh.

  • Anonymous

I wish people would stop reporting what that attention whore tweets.

this guys is seriously such an idiot. does he really think microsoft would do something as stupid as RIM? release a brand new OS, then only a year later release a newer version of it that is completely incompatible with the previous OS? even worse, does he thing MSFT is dumb enough to really champion a new OS (which was a clean break from the older os) and after accumulating over 60,000 apps tell developers either recompile or you’re screwed?
Talk about taking random guesses, this guy makes me sick

Watson shouldn’t even need to elaborate and no app developer should believe Murtazin, one you develop on .Net and Silverlight, your app is guranteed to work on whatever platform. Which is obvious now that one of the reasons Microsoft never actually allowed native app development for WP7 is that they had plans for WP8 and the kernel changes; limiting developers to Silverlight/XNA/.Net was an obvious choice, it was already a popular framework for development and it guaranteed binary compatibility with WHATEVER platform that was to come.

    1 – No.
2 – Silverlight is already DirectX powered.

This Eldar guy is an idiot and quite why people still reports these ramblings of a deluded mind is beyond me. May aswell get our news buy asking my 5yo than trust anything that comes out of his mouth. If i was MS i would sue him.
