Carmack turns down Windows Phone 7 Rage port due to no native development

wp7-rage John Comack from id Software announced on their blog their intention to bring a version of their Rage game for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC to iOS devices. When asked over twitter however he made it clear he did not consider Windows phone 7 a suitable second platform, blaming it on the need to use a higher level language like XNA rather than his favourite, C++.

The Rage game for the iPhone is expected to be around 1.4 GB in size, and use several advanced optimization techniques to enable it to to run on iOS devices, so the need for low level access is likely very real.

On the other hand, it has been rumoured that some applications have already been granted access to the native Iris framework Microsoft uses to code their applications, so it may very well be that all John had to do was ask.

John did say he would consider an Android version, a platform which started with only access to a Java-like layer but eventually added in a Native Development Kit, something which Microsoft may want to formalize for developers who need it.

The main hurdle seems to be C++ to C# port, which may be non-trivial.

If I'm not mistaken, iOS apps aren't developed with C++. Why is *that* not as issue for these folks but WP7 is?
