On The Free Xbox Avatar Props For Signing Up The Windows Phone Newsletter

Few days ago we reported about the free Windows Phone themed Xbox Avatar props for users who sign for Windows Phone newsletter. Many people got the avatar redeem code as expected, but some didn’t get it. It was because some great Windows Phone fans out there abused the system to get all the avatar props for themselves. They even listed it on eBay!

Don’t worry, Microsoft is with us. Here is their response,

We are flattered that our avatar prop is so popular, but frustrated that someone abused the system to reserve a bunch of codes for themselves and shut out legitimate users in the process. We’ve now ended the promotion for the skateboard. If you signed up for the newsletter (thanks, BTW!), got the invite for the gear and weren’t able to redeem your code, we will be making it right: we will send you a code in the next few days for a different prop (a Windows Phone foam finger).

Now of course most of us are not that extreme, but I think there has certainly been the rise of the WinPhan movement, as many sites have found when posting articles or reviews negative to the OS.

Now some may think this makes regular users look bad, but I think it is a sign of the love the OS inspires.

Apple Fanboy’s Love Letter On Nokia Lumia 900 Windows Phone

Subject: Apple fanboy loves his Windows phone

Mr. Ballmer,

Hopefully this will get to you. Your team deserves credit for producing an excellent product in the newest version of Windows Phone. Yes, I am writing from my MacBook Pro. And I have been a fairly loyal Apple customer over the years. However, I recently bought a Nokia Lumia 900 and intend on keeping it. For full disclosure, I was sure to make sure it could be returned after a dismal experience with an Android phone.
My reasons for switching are:

Call quality. I actually use my phone as a phone. That concept seems to get lost in many product reviews. One of my employees actually thanked me for getting rid of my iPhone as it was so much easier to hear me. I apologize for the tedium but it means a great deal to me and my business.

Simplicity. My family owns five vehicles, including two Fords with Sync. The 4S didn’t support all functions in any of them. My Nokia 900 was flawless out of the box. It was refreshing to have something that just worked. I cannot afford to have my primary means of communication be a science experiment.

No junk software. Speaking of science experiments, I also tried a Motorola Razr. Software that cannot be deleted and restarts itself? A company with questionable privacy rules. Software that terrified my poor in-laws? I guess if you like spending your day tinkering with your phone, it’s pretty cool. Maybe it beats playing with your Star Wars dolls?

Simplicity again. Everything after set up has been painless as well. Adding apps, setting up email accounts, etc. I thought the iPhone was good. Your set up was actually smoother and took less time. Same for Wi-Fi, in-car Bluetooth, etc.

Speed. The 900 doesn’t seem to lag the way the iPhone did at times. Everything seems to execute quickly. That I don’t think about it is probably the best compliment.

Live Tiles. It’s a minor thing but the Metro tiles are pretty cool. I just like the look.

WinPhone Info Redesign – Now With Connectivity Settings Live Tiles

WinPhone Info displays real-time info about your Windows Phone device in an easy-to-navigate, Metro-styled interface. View detailed info in the category pages, including device, memory, media, miscellaneous, network, region, sensors, and location. Tap the favorite icon next to any item to add it to the favorites list on the main page for quick viewing.

WinPhone Info also provides connectivity settings Live Tiles for airplane mode, bluetooth, cellular, and wi-fi that you can pin to your Start screen for convenient access to your phone’s settings. Windows Phone Design Series From Arturo Toledo Coming As Free E-Book

Windows Phone developers have one happy and one sad news to digest. First, Arturo Toledo, Senior User Experience Designer at Microsoft for the Windows Phone Design Studio is leaving Microsoft. He was the person behind the 31 weeks of Metro Design for Windows Phone series of blog posts. The posts by Arturo were amazing and really helped many Windows Phone developers to streamline their app designs. And even though he is leaving Microsoft for personal reason, Arturo has announced that he will be completing the series and release all those blog posts as a free e-book as well.

You can still read his previous blog posts on Metro design and his work history at Microsoft working on various teams from Expression Studio to Silverlight, etc, on his blog here. We would like to thank Arturo for his contribution to Windows Phone developer community and wish him all the best for his future work.

Overall, the application is much more responsive and fluid than the previous version, which is remarkable considering how fast it already was.
