First Thoughts On My New HD7

2010-11-08 21-23-16.800

Well guys, like I said… I am back. Today after work, I went straight to the T-mobile store, and picked up a new HD7 to replace my T-mobile G2 (Android got boring fast). Well I am here to say that this is certainly a trade up and I will tell you why.

The dream come true? Windows Phone 7 on the HTC HD2!

It appears some Chinese hackers have achieved what has been thought to be nearly impossible – Windows Phone 7 on the HTC HD2!

The video above is much more convincing that previous mock-ups we have seen, going from boot all the way to proper interaction and multi-touch.

The XDA.CN forum appears to have an active hacking community working on the port, which will hopefully spill over into an English version very soon.

Of course with Windows Phone 7 being a much more locked down OS than before a hacked ROM may not be able to access features such as Zune and Marketplace, but getting the OS up and running is a major achievement in itself, given the discouraging news we have heard previously.

I for one cant wait to give it a try.

HTC HD2 booting Windows Phone 7?

Has Windows Phone 7 been hacked to run on the HTC HD2? The device certainly has the horse power, and of course the specs are virtually the same as the current crop of Windows Phone 7 devices, but readers who follow the progress of the project on XDA- Developers know it has been hard going, with Da_G recently admitting prospects were dim.

This video however filmed by renowned ROM hacker Cotulla however appears to show the goal is in reach, with the device booting from the MAGLD bootloader.

Is it real?  Who can say at the moment, but as they say, in an infinite universe anything is possible :)

Desire HD ROM Port Now Available

We usually like to keep our Android news apart from each other but since there was much interest in the previous article, we though we should let you know of this. Just released today by Darkstone, you can finally download and use the Desire HD ROM that was unveiled last week. HTC has been cracking down on the leaked ROM and seemingly asking people to take down the links, but they got it a bit too late since Dark had a go at it.

His port seems to work fast on the video and here is a little information he provided:

HTC Desire HD build for HTC HD2 by darkstone (Beta 2):
Easier to list whats NOT working:
- Camera (app closes itself)
- Ebook reader (E-Books do not open)
- Ringtones (Unable to select a ringtone, get a force close error)
- Video playback from SD card is slow, needs rectifying
- LED Notifications are bizzare, sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t
// Creates a 1gb data.img (takes a long time to make on first boot, be patient. No, the HD2 has not crashed despite what the screen looks like! Wait 10 minutes or so.)
// Don’t worry about FB console not showing, that’s normal
// This shouldn’t really be considered as a build for daily usage, still experimental
// Copy the Android folder to SD card, run CLRCAD.EXE and haret.exe on your HD2
Git diff patches included, Thanks to gauner1986 for sharing his patch (and also correcting my mistake with PPPD alt)!
Thanks to mattc for support!
Thanks to football for the dump!
Thanks to the usual suspects at #htc-linux and #htc-linux-chat!
Kernel Tree: http://www.gitorious.com/linux-on-wi…x_on_wince_htc (Kernel compiled on 19/09/2010 by darkstone)
Diff patches used in the kernel provided are included in the build, found in the /Android/diff/ folder.

So if this all interests you, head over to Xda to talk and download it at his site.

HTC HD2 Already Running Desire HD ROM

It seems they HD2 is faster than some other Android devices at getting ports because in the video above DarkStone has a version running on his HD2. He managed to get this port only 3 days after the original release of the new device. Now it is not the fastest build I have seen on video but I am sure that is why he did not release it yet. I am sure he will improve, enhance, optimize this build so he can upgrade his line of Android builds.

What do you think of the HD2 and its unstoppable ability to keep up with current devices and take everything while still looking cool.

PS3 jailbreak demoed using an HTC HD2

There seems to be a fashion at the moment for jailbreaking PS3’s using odd electronics, including TI-84 calculators and Palm Pre’s.

We thought we would let HTC HD2 owners know that they do not have to be left out of the party.

Raddicon has uploaded the instructions for using the HTC HD2 for the process, which includes loading a special Android partition.

The instructions are:

  1. Extract the Android folder on the root of your SD card.
  2. Run CLRCAD.exe and haret.exe in the Android folder on your HD2. Boot the build until at home screen, ensure screen remains on.
  3. Plug in the HD2 USB cable in to the Playstation 3 whilst the Playstation is turned off from mains.
  4. Turn Playstation 3 mains power on.
  5. Press the Power button on the Playstation then the Eject button as soon as the Power has been turned on.
  6. And that should be it
  7. Copy the backup-manager to an USB-stick and connect it to the PS3
  8. Install the backup-manager in the “game” menu

HD2 Now Can Take Locked Pictures, But With An App

One of the cool things we have seen in all these demo videos is the ability for WP7 to take pictures while the device is lock. That is a very nice concept and it seems the person that brought us the video brought us this news about the xda application development. This news come from Pocketnow who were tipped of this new XDA application called  Camera lock button. Created by MilaCzeque and available to all HD2 owners, it does just what WP7 can do, by letting you press the home button twice while locked and your taken to the camera app and returned to the lock screen after.

If I took many pictures with the HD2’s great Camera, I would actually get this, but I have found myself taking less and less as time goes on and have become a little conservative on the matter.

If you on the other hand find taking pictures on your device an hourly thing, download this and let us know how it goes.

Windows Mobile Barnes and Noble eReader gets major update

BNreader_0Pocketnow reports that the Barnes and Noble eReader bundled with the HTC HD2 has received a major update which brings it up to best in class functionality.

The software has received some UI improvements, such as a grid view for books, and some major functionality improvements, such as being able to read books lent to you by other eReader users, such as users of the Nook, and also lend books to others, the ability to easily bookmark pages, easily look-up words in the dictionary, a search feature,  night mode, and a few more features.

Hopefully we will see a similarly full-featured client for Windows Phone 7 in the near future.

Read about all the new features, with many screen shots, at Pocketnow here.

HTC HD2 inductive charging mod v2–now with extended battery

Hwangytangy9 has taken the mod of using the Palm Pre inductive cradle to charge an HTC HD2 to the next level, attaching the circuitry to an HTC HD2 extended battery for even longer away from the plug.

FingerPrint Lockscreen: Scan Yourself Into The Future

Having a cool lock screen is something crucial in having a phone your comfortable with, and this lock screen is one of those I would call cool. This fingerprint lock screen has been featured on our site before, but this time it comes with a great video. The video done by 1800PPC, and is a great demo of what you will get if you install this on your device. It shows of how the lock screen handles your finger, and the settings.

I think this software is fairly cool, but it is a bit too plain. A simple lock screen should at least have a good notification area and other things that keep you informed, but this is still a beta software, so that is no big deal just yet.

Features:

  • A secure lockscreen executable which unlocks “only” to your touch
  • Ability to customize some of the applications components
  • Custom-Made TopBar Controls
    • New Item Icons: Icons for new SMS, E-Mail, Voice Mail, and Missed Calls
    • Clock-On-Top:A remake of the typical Windows Statusbar Clock. Simple and functional.
    • Battery Meter: A Percent-By-Percent updating battery meter.
    • Signal Meter: A 5-Bar Signal Meter getting updates efficiently and quickly
  • A Status-Text Area with the current action of the program is (Waiting, scanning, SUCCESS, or FAILURE)

Installation:

  1. Download the FFP_LockScreen_Basic.cab file.
  2. Copy the file to your Touch-Screen device.
  3. Using a file-explorer, execute the CAB file to start the installation.
  4. Select to install to Phone Storage (Not Memory Card).
  5. When the installation says complete, you can run the program.

If this all interests you and you want to have a slightly more sleek and nerdy device, then download an install this right away.

Rss Feed Tab For Sense… Wah?

New Sense Tab Development: RSS

Reading the XDA blog is something I do regularly (since I am suppose to be writing for it), and I just found a little something that you might be interested in. This new development originates from the forums, where members are working hard at bringing the RSS software to your home screen.

The project seems to have quite a bit of things going for it, but sadly I cannot confirm due to XDA being down for maintenance.

Here is what the blog post included:

The plan is for this project will be open as possible and allow new developers to have a go, I would like to make this accessible as possible.
There is plenty which can be done, by all ranges of skill levels so have a look through and give things a try and ask some questions if you get stuck. The aim initially is to develop a fully working RSS Tab, which everyone can add and contribute to then, using the same methods, many other tabs can be created.

Other than that, you will have to wait till XDA is back up. When it returns the thread will have all the information you need.

HTC HD2… Simply Timeless

When released, the HTC HD2 was a device for the ages. This new technology had something no other phone had, and much to my surprise, that statement still stands true for the most part with today’s new hardware. I have been trying to replace my HD2 with a more modern and newly released device. Now you may ask why? Well apparently I might have listened to a bit too much music and now my HD2’s 3.5mm headphone jack does not work properly. Now back to the story. I looked at all the new devices from Android to Android (no new Windows Phone device coming out anytime soon, Only WP7). I looked at the Samsung Vibrant for T-mobile and figured out while its new, it still pretty much mimics the HD2 but does not bring along the dual LED flash or the non buggy software. I looked at the Desire, but it does not have T-mobile 3G and the hardware is pretty similar to the HD2 except for the small screen.

After all this, it hit me. The HD2 was not made to just replace the HD1. It must have been made as HTC’s final device for Windows Mobile 6.5, and they wanted something that will never get old. I mean the spec sheet is still pretty hard to beat even with more advanced technology out there, and it still looks very sleek and slim.

At the end of the day, if you want to stick with WM6.5, it seems HTC gave you all they got and put everything into the perfect final device. Now let’s hope they do the same for the HD3 (which I should be buying if it looks sick). My HD2 is still in my pocket, it cannot be replaced at the moment with any current hardware out there.

HTC Brothers Fight: HD2 Vs Droid Incredible

Droid Incredible101_2138The Droid Incredible and HD2, two devices born by the same mothers with many similarities, but when it comes down to the focus… They are not even related. I have had both devices for quite some time now; enjoying everything about both whether it’s the HD’s huge screen or the Droids small form factor. I love both devices, and like parents do… They put their kids head to head to find out who is the better one.

Since I am a bad parent and have to send my kid (Droid Incredible) back to child services… It seems about time I compare them. Before clicking the read more link remember I like to stay unbiased and so certain things might seem like I am being biased to the Incredible. No, its just the truth.

Enjoy
