ChevronWP7 labs to bring cheap, official developer device unlocking

The ChevronWP7 team has announced the upcoming release of an official, Microsoft-endorsed developer unlocking system for Windows Phone 7.

The service will allow users to side-load applications to their devices without going through Marketplace but will however require a small fee to cover the costs of the service, but will of course not allow developers to upload apps to Marketplace.

The service will be supported by the ChevronWP7Labs site and should be particularly useful for developers in countries were WP7 development is not supported.

Sounds like a sellout to me ….

I would have to agree on that one

Sounds like a bitter loser who can’t do this himself bashing the hard work of others who can.

What I can do however is buy an Android device. Bye bye WP7. Jailbreaking and Warez are the most important features to me and this move seems to effectively stymy that entire idea. Sure, eventually someone will fix it and save the platform from itself, but this doesn’t bode well.

If you need Warez, go elsewhere please :)

Heh, paying … lol. Well, at least I was smart enough to get a LG phone…

And particularly important for apps that can’t be approved in the Marketplace, like File Explorers and Registry Editors. Custom ringtones, custom accent colors and clearing out push/live tile errors are all good things. I think it will be worth a few dollars for most users.

      yep, I agree.

Wow. Iphone dev team charging for a jailbreak? Cynaogen charging for a rom? Saurik charging for cydia? Webos Internals charging for patches?
Looks like the chevron7 team are MS’s b*tches.
Are any wp7 devs out there going to “nut up” and do what is right.

Maybe you are not getting the point – here is what I think: If it would be free, almost everyone would unlock his phone (Because it will be easy and supported by MSFT). Obviously, MSFT has some interest to keep the walled garden somewhat intact for the (average) users, carriers, content providers and the developers who want to make a living.
To pick up your point: the iPhone dev team is doing something that is NOT supported by Apple (read about the hurdle to wait for the next jailbreak ^^). Because it is difficult for the average user, the number of people jailbreaking is low and Apple does not sue the iphone dev team. Android is open in the sense that everybody can cook their own rom. This is totally different than closed platforms like WP and iOS. Even though, still many OEMs and Carriers try to protect (encrypted bootloaders) their phones from hackers. WebOS again a totally different story because they have a problem with developer attraction. They have to make it as easy as possible to get people to use their platform. So to sum up: What do you want?

A hacked Windows Phone where you have to wait for the next jailbreak after new updates come along. Security holes in the OS will be used for jailbreaking. Developers may loose interest if too many people do it.

      or

A SIMPLE and LIFELONG jailbreak for (making it up) for $20 one time fee to use stuff many average users don’t care (Emulators, custom dialers, etc.). Supported by Microsoft, eligible for updates like every one else. Not screwing up the platform.
