ChevronWP7 Planning To Allow Users To Developer Unlock Windows Phone Device For Just $9

image

When Windows Phone Marketplace for developers is expanding to many countries with Mango release, what’s the exact goal of ChevronWP7 labs which has some ties with Microsoft. Chris Walsh of Chevron team tweeted few details on their goal. First and foremost, Chevron will allow developers from unsupported countries to developer unlock the Windows Phone device for $9 . He also clearly stated that they won’t support piracy and this may lead to some sort of homebrew apps as well. Hope their plans soon materialize and give unlucky developers a chance to play with their Windows Phone devices.

Of note is that the solution will not allow users to access unsupported APIs including editing the registry.

Wow that was useless (for me at least). But who can blame them from cashing in? As opposed to being hounded by million dollar lawyers for the rest of their lives …

Better be soon. After Mango and the Navigation software coming I see less use.
    Still a good initiative though.

I really like the concept and completely support them not supporting pirated apps. I hear those may be harder in Mango anyway due to the signing of those apps, but time will tell there. Personally, since MS can see what you have loaded, I’d imagine piracy would be a little foolish.

My main complaint with the changes MS made to Mango is that this won’t allow registry editors and similar. I understand MS wanting to protect the registry, but at the same time think that if a user wants to hack around, they should be able to and deal with the consequences. That means that while Chevron will allow homebrew apps, they won’t necessarily be as powerful as today’s homebrew apps can be as they won’t work with things not open to developers.

The biggest plus I see with this is that I don’t need to pay $99 to just play around with apps on my phone. I can write code, deploy to my phone, give it some testing, and if it looks like it might be a viable app, _then_ pay $99 to start up the whole account to push to the Marketplace.

Problem is though that a lot of people, myself included, would never buy a phone that doesn’t run pirated apps. And there goes the entire platform down the drain at a critical moment where it needs to gain momentum …

      • RedScare360

So do I understand that you are saying you would never buy a platform that does not allow you to steal apps?

      • http://twitter.com/AaronCT123 Aaron C-T

        That’s horribly flawed logic.

        • Armonjack

          Actually, it’s fantastic logic.

“I won’t buy a phone that doesn’t allow pirated apps.”

Is very directly saying, “I will not buy a phone that will not allow me to sideload apps that I didn’t pay for, but aren’t available for free,”

          Ergo,

“I will not buy a phone that does not allow me to sideload ‘stolen’ apps.”

…editing the registry was one of the strong and at the same time weak points fo Windows Mobile OS. Every dumb ass was able to get an editor and f*** around in the registry. When he then bricked his device, it was of course not his fault but Microsoft was to blame for its “crappy” OS. So much for taking responsiblities. This is one of the reasons why WM got such a bad reputation….
