Concept: Windows Phone 7 contact page with a dash of history and presence

New people hub

As a follow up from the last concept design for a hybrid unified email hub, I have come up with concept that I think will enhance the individual contacts page. The two additions are a “presence bar” and a history page.

Presence bar

When the user taps on one of their contacts, they are sent to the normal profile page, but this one includes a new addition, a presence bar. The primary function of the bar is to quickly alert the user if their friend’s availability on Windows Live Messenger, Xbox live, Twitter or Foursquare (an interval period since the last entry can be set for the last two in order to approximate whether the contact is online) e.t.c. The four tabs are customizable to take into account what network the friends are on. The tabs will be gray if they are not available, and change to different colors or maybe just have an overlay indicating whether they are busy, away or available in case of IM. I just used icons, but a different design that fits better with the Metro UI could still work.

History tab

With Windows phone 7 ‘s philosophy of trying to save users from having to jump in and out of apps, I think a history tab would be perfect to help in this regard. With it, a user can quickly glance at all the various communications they have recently had with a particular contact and act accordingly. In addition to the list above, there could be tweets, Zune social updates, Xbox live notifications and more. The History could be filtered so that only updates within the last day, week or month appear.

What do you guys think?

These are great ideas. So simple, yet so helpful.

    • rush24

      thanks

      • ojojoj

i dont see microsoft touting windows live messenger… especially when the phone has text messaging which is essentially the same thing now.

Im liking the history tab. Not so fussed about the presence bar.
What I would really like is to have the "whats new" tab showing a list of EVERYTHING from that person.
Listing calls you recieved, sent or missed, texts, emails, the occasional tweet, facebook status, youtube upload, all in chronological order. That would be pretty good.

    • rush24

The history tab does list all those items chronologically because once you tap on a particular item say calls, it takes you to the call history with that person showing calls from and to the person including missed calls. I Kept the What;s new tab for longer form notifications status from Facebook,, Windows Live, Photo sharing sites like Flickr. Basically stuff that you can comment on.

I don't consider any of that useful. I wouldn't pay for that functionality (meaning, it is NOT value-added to me).

    • http://twitter.com/MistaWet @MistaWet

The reason you don't consider any of these two concept features useful is very interesting to me. Care to elaborate?

    • ice

Then u don't get the power of integrating MSFT consumer properties; especially on WP7. Also, what what make u think u have to pay for anything more than what u do via your MoOp now? I bet u wouldn't or won't for a lot of strategic reasons.

If it didn't slow my phone down I wouldn't care one way or the other, but I really don't get it. Would I be opening each contact's profile to look at their history to see the last time I communicated with them and for how long. Phone calls, voice mail, emails, messaging, IM, tweets. Isn't that what the live tiles are for. Get in, deal with it and get back out again. Would rather see things like; flags for Hotmail and grouping of call history first, rather than needing to look somewhere else for the info.

    • rush24

This would just be another way to check your history with a contact especially if you haven't talked to them in a while. instead of having to go to say the email inbox and search when the last time you emailed John smith , or when the last text your received from him. swiping to history saves you the time of having to dive into all those applications in one place.

  • John

The history tab makes so much sense in the People's hub. When I look up a person I want to not only know about what they're up to right now, but also every communication I've had with them.

By the way, you're basing "IM" on the fact that Messenger/FB Chat would be integrated into WP7 natively?

    Great idea!

    • rush24

When you go to the people hub and tap on a persons profile, this would be the page that would appear starting with the profile tab.
You are right the IM is based on linking chat with WLM

  • Carl

Love it! One of the few things I miss from Sense on WM6.5 is the history associated with each contact. I hope MS implements this in a future update.

  • gs1968

Off topic but WP7 hit 10000 apps on windowsphoneapplist

    • Ram

yes, at this pace we will beat Android Market before the end of next year and if Nokia brings out good phones we can beat iOS AppStore by the end of next year.

  • Tommy

    Great idea indeed !

  • http://twitter.com/AaronCT123 @AaronCT123

History tab yes, but not feeling the presence bar.

  • Sean D.

    Now THIS is nice!!

Good job, wish MS would do something like this.

  • Drewidian

I'm in. I like this. It reminds me of WM HTC Contacts app where you could do the same thing, but it was on different tabs for the user. Hopefully someone from MS will see this and add the functionality.

  • chrislynchhp

I do like the Presence Bar with the Social Media icons. I don't think the Avatar images are needed, as it just clutters up the view. Love the History as well, which would speed up looking for contact history.

  • James Choe

The history bar is great and so is the presence bar but to make the presence bar fit in better with the metro aesthetics, it should be no more then silhouettes of the icons i think. But nonetheless, great ideas!

  • http://twitter.com/EJ1024 @EJ1024

this is a nice concept, but I'm sure msft team is looking at this for sure, can you all please tell Engadget to stop talking shit about msft, those guys are so negative.

  • http://twitter.com/Saad073 @Saad073

The idea of the History pane is drool worthy. It just make so much sense, especially considering how well contacts are integrated into the OS already.

  • Koyce

I love it..it would be a good idea if there's an option to delete or clear because of the mrs :)

    • batterbatter

      lmao,.. true, true

  • djguapo

    YES a thousand times!

  • jabtano

I like the idea of it.It just brings another function to the table. For some people this would be a benefit. It would be for me.

  • Omz9

    I would definitely buy it!

  • WP7Fan

That would be great – it fits perfectly with the integrated experiences.

  • peter

Great concept. I'd add smart dial, contact groups and i'd like to see how many items i have in my inbox.

  • Rico

I was actually surprised that there wasn't a history pivot when really dived into WP7. It made so much sense. I'm actually kind of expecting it to be added in the future, though I'm not sure if voicemails would be tracked or if that would even be necessary.

The presence bar isn't working for me. I'm really not sure how important it is to know that someone is *online* versus being *accessible*, and as we know WP7 natively allows many ways to access someone easily. With push notifications, you're essentially always online until you sign out. I imagine MS would just add additional contacts to the list of contact options currently on the profile page. If they did go with icons for some reason, they wouldn't grey out communication methods that weren't currently available. They simply wouldn't display them. That falls in line moreso with the minimalist aspect of Metro.

    • Rico

First sentence should read "I was actually surprised that there wasn't a history *panorama* when really dived into WP7."
