Dell re-affirms commitment to Windows Phone 7, Business Insider fails to apologize for rogue reporting

This must have been exactly what Business Insider Jay Yarow experienced when he completely misinterpreted a statement by Deutsche Bank analyst Jonathan Goldberg that the OS will launch on devices by HTC, Samsung and LG.

His supposed “scoop” was that Dell had dropped Windows Phone 7, and his story has spread like wildfire, leaving forcing Dell to release a statement confirming that they are, in fact, releasing a Windows Phone 7 handset.

Any reports, or speculation, that report Dell will not support Windows Phone 7 are false… Microsoft announced Dell as a supporting partner at this year’s Mobile World Congress and nothing’s changed. We are excited to collaborate with Microsoft on Windows Phone 7, and are looking forward to bringing customers amazing mobile experiences.

The unique form factor of the Dell Lightning has already attracted many adherents, and the loss of the computer manufacturer would therefore by a psychological blow to the Windows Phone 7 launch. It is however without doubt that the three cellphone OEMs, HTC, Samsung and LG, will be much more significant for the eventual success for of the operating system.

And Jay, you may want to stop jumping to conclusions.

This is disgusting. If Dell hadn't responded so quickly, this could have been taken up by mainstream print and television news, causing untold damage to the launch of WP7. These glorified bloggers should be ashamed of themselves.

I bet that tool was gleeful to "report" on this without even so much as asking Dell for confirmation, knowing full well how many bloggers would be more than happy to spread this around.

Yeah, I read the original article and I didn't see anywhere in there where Dell said they weren't supporting Windows Phone 7. It looks like the reporter just assumed that.

The Dell Lightning is the most beautiful WP7 device I've seen so far.

Things are looking pretty bad for Widnows Phone 7.

So Dell is holding out until next year before releasing a Windows Phone 7 handset. Wait for the other 3 to dive in to test the water before getting those toes wet.

Fact is, Microsoft did lose OEMs. It had 8 signed up. Now there are only 3 at launch.

Really fishing for bad news, keep trying. It would be pretty stupid to launch 8 different handsets at the same time. Dell and Asus will launch their phones within the next few months, probably staggering them every couple months. Your argument is really weak.
