Detailed HTC Touch Pro 2 review published

As usual the good people of the Russian site Mobile-Review have managed to give HTC’s latest devices a good going over well before everyone else.

They find the device to be a bit of a mixed bag, being less than impressed with high price and choice of plastic as the primary build material.

On the other hand, they had this to say on the keyboard:

In my opinion, the keyboard HTC Touch Pro 2 can safely be called one of the most user-friendly QWERTY keyboard in modern mobile devices, whether they are smartphones or communicators. It’s really good without any reservations and discounts that you need to get used to it.

The review does not spend much time on the new TouchFlo3D interface, saving this for another article, but they did publish this video:

HTC seems to have done all the UI work that Microsoft should have done in the first place.
    Good work HTC!
Microsoft – no capacitive touchscreens and still that horrible Windows Mobile experience.
You guys have absolutely no excuse.

    • k

Hey… to those guys who keep talking about capacitive vs resistive touchscreens.. Oh pls.

Resistive screens are still the best for WM now. that’s the truth. trust me.

      • xen

Agreed. It’s my job to work on various touch screen devices so Ive used all sorts of devices with both resistive and capacitive and resistive is faaaaar superior and more prescise. Its so good most industries use it for important equipment and devices ATMs/cash points, tills even the Nintendo DS and many more high quality devices.

you guys obviously havent spent much time using a capacitive screen then!!! i have owned many resistive ( i currently own the diamond 2 from htc) and i own an Apple iphone. Whilst resistive does have some positive notes, i disagree that it is a superior method. Its a pain in the arse to have something in your pocket start up…like calls etc.. capacitive is much better suited to the finger touch generation, much more responsive screens such as the iphone are the way forward im afraid!

I heard the touch pro2 will be running at $800.00 unlocked of course, for me, that’s a bit much. I just purchased a high end 4GB RAM (450GB memory) notebook for $700 with loads of other features. I was looking forward to this phone, but the price is so damn high. I look forward to the Nokia N97 in a few months then. I can wait. there is a site that use some good info about the touch pro2, http://www.AllTouchPro2.com i want to hear what your view is on this smart phone.

It will be subsidized on most networks in US.

There seems to be an engineering design problem with the HTC Touch Pro 2 in that my loudspeaker started giving a very creaky sound just after just a few days. Very inconvenient since the HTC policy in Europe seems to be not to replace the machine even if problems occurs so soon after purchase. No, I have to hand it over for estimated 10 working days for repairs. Ridiculous policy.

Does anyone else have the same problems?

With my horrible experience on the HTC Touch Pro I am never buying another HTC product again… i have been struggling for 8 months now with locks ups, freezes, random calls that resulted in unexpected phone bills not to mention the crappiest battery life ever.
On top of that i even tried to replace the TouchFLO interface with another product, and that just made the situation worse with even more freezes. I have gotten the phone replaced once, upgraded the software and tried to disable most of the features without any success. My phone company refuses to replace the unit again as they believe the phone is operating as expected…. I feel like buying 100000000 add words on the internet explaining why people should never buy any HTC products. Back to Blackberry and something that actually works.

I know 3 other friends that has the Touch Pro all with the same problems, so it is NOT a single case of bad luck, it's a major case of untested and low quality production from HTC.

Just got the phone. I am no developer, but from a user standpoint I can say it is really solid. Solid, heavy feel, shiny look. Beautiful looking GUI but the resistive touchscreen does make mistakes. E.g. when trying to flick a page upwards I all too often select a link. Also, the software could be more efficient in terms of being able to perform certain actions that one would expect to be able to perform on certain pages. i.e. it is not entirely logical! e.g. on the People page, it shows my first contact's photo but I cannot access any other contacts. Come on HTC! But the keypad has an unbelievably great feel to it. Unfortunately the phone is too slow for my tastes when doing things such as downloading videos, turning the phone to landscape etc. It clearly needs a faster processor and much more memory, but then again so do all the other phones. I have been having probs with getting my emails consistently working but I think that is T-mobile related. The user manual is sparse in my opinion-I would like not only to know "how to" do certain things but "why to." Also there is no troubleshooting guide!! Overall, I rarely get so excited over these things, but HTC has a beautiful, solid device that clearly needs certain improvements but that I am VERY happy with overall! Congratulations HTC on creating a gorgeous toy!

Guys, perhaps someone could help me. I still cannot seem to get emails unless I am connected to a WiFi network. However, I am able to browse the Web even if disconnected from WiFi.

I was on T-mobile's solo plan and xferred into their business plan. In order to keep my number I had to temporarily leave T-Mobile and xfer my number to Orange SIM only plan, then back again into T-mobile. Could that be the issue?

    Great phone!
Speaker phone works great, good phone reception and is a dramatic improvement over my former phone the xv6700.
Keyboard is great, black keys with white letters, which are backlit.

One small gripe is the the ’sleep’ button should be deactivated when the keyboard is out, because I keep hitting it by accident with the inside of my left index finger when typing with my thumbs.

I do have one question though. The specs of the phone says it has TWO cameras. Is there a camera hidden in the front display for 2-way video phone (maybe to use with skype) or is it one still cam and one video cam using the same lens? Does anyone know?

    • Surur

The European version has 2 cameras. The US version only one.
