Did the HTC HD2 outsell the Nexus One?

htchd2vsgooglenexus

Now of course we do not know how many HTC HD2’s were sold, but we can be very certain HTC’s whole first shipment did in fact sell-out, with shortages all over the place.

The same can not be set of HTC’s Android ‘superphone’ , which is estimated to have sold only 20 000 units, despite the full force of Google’s all powerful advertising network being behind it.  In fact its likely if you look to the left you will see an add for the Nexus, as Google has been pushing its ad onto many Windows Mobile sites using Google ads, and of course most companies would kill to get a front-page add on the Google search home page.

Claims of 6 million Nexus One sales in 2010 now seem a tad optimistic – 20 000 x 50 is only equal to one million.

Isn't there an information about how many HDs have been sold?

  • netboy

maybe because windows mobile is better! i like to have DATE and CLOCK at top bar, can android does that? also WM got better (internet) browser like Opera Mobile 9.7 and 10.0

Are the companies going to announce sales at some point? it would be very interesting.

I'm pretty sure the HTC HD2 sold more than a quarter million the first week.

On top of that the Nexus One was under tight wraps so no one really heard about that phone. It was kept so tight, and they didn't even advertise it as much. If they would've advertised it for a month i bet they would've beat the MyTouch 3G, if they would've given it a month to sit and marinate and let the blogs go crazy.

Instead they were too gassed and just released it because they're google. But then again they have nothing to lose since they're just advertising their OS and they're not making money off the actual hardware.

"I'm pretty sure the HTC HD2 sold more than a quarter million the first week."

      Based on what information?

Are we really comparing units sold of when one's been out for months and the other only a couple weeks at most?

i do think the HD2 really set the precedent for what a device could be both in terms of hardware and software (with Sense), and in doing so, set the bar higher for the Nexus 1. If you look at the hardware between both devices, you see just how similar they are. It didn't help that there were rumors that the Google Phone would be more revolutionary, perhaps using whitespace and VOIP and being largely ad-supported, only to turn out to be another HTC phone. Of course, i'm sure we'll see the Nexus One surpass the HD2 in sales over time.

well, it sold 20k the first week based on internet ads and blog post.
imagine if they hype it like they did with google chrome that appears on google.com EVERYTIME U LOOK AT IT!
needless to say google chrome just beat out safari!
the nexus one was made to be an example of what android could do.
my coworker has one….IT IS AMAZING!

Where does it sat Google has sold 20,000 Nexus Ones?

This information is that there are about 20,000 Nexus Ones out in the wild, they are merely usage statistics. And as we know Google gave countless of these phones out to their employees of all levels, so who knows how many less than 20,000 they've sold so far.

It's not really fair to compare it to the HD2 since that's been out quite a while longer, but HD2 and WM aside many sites are reporting that Nexus One sales have been poor to abysmal. Can't say I blame people, though the Nexus seems like a perfectly fine phone I'm sure I wasn't the one who was seriously underwhelmed at how conventional a smartphone it is.

Many good points made in the above posts. But I think there may be a couple of other reasons it is not doing so well.

For all the glory heeped upon it by certain websites, the Nexus 1 really doesn't do anything that hasn't already been achieved by other devices and other OS's before it. So there is really nothing new here, nothing inovative, no new break-through technology. After some sites talked it up before its release, this is almost a let-down for some potential buyers.

And secondly, the online news sites are full of headlines about people having problems with the device (some of it more user than device, some probably not) and not being able to get any customer support help from Google. This will certainly chase away a number of other potential customers.

And my final point is that according to the way I understand things as they are now, the customer must first go through Google to buy the phone and then through the carrier to get service agreements so the device is ready for use. In the USA, this is not what people are used to doing. This new way of conducting business will probably take a while to catch on. In the mean time, it means a few less sales.

I dunno, google saying stuff like just don't do evil things and regarding social network marketing that if you use google products they already know who you talk to the most. I'm thinking of looking elsewhere for my phone. One company that warehouses 70% of the worlds information bascially controls trends. It's not short term ramifications but the long term that I worry about.

But yeah, once google.com starts displaying their phones, it's all over. They'll be the market leader in mobile withing 5 years. mark my words.
