Distimo report finds the WP7 Marketplace has passed Blackberry App World

games

In their look back over the past year, Distimo has confirmed in their monthly report that Marketplace is now the 3rd largest app platform, after iOS and the Android Marketplace, and the 4th largest app store, after the iPhone app store, iPad app store and Android Marketplace.

Blackberry App world takes up the 5th position followed by the Nokia Ovi store.

Of note is that Marketplace showed the biggest growth of over 400% year on year, and that the Marketplace for Windows Mobile never passed 2500 available apps.

Something which should be of particular interest to Microsoft is that on the iOS plaform developers made 50% of their revenue from in-App purchases, a facility which is still generally not available to developers on Windows Phone 7.

Another interesting point from the survey is despite the burgeoning size of the Android Market, it only makes half the revenue of the much smaller iPad App Store and only a 1/4 of the revenue of the iPhone app store, suggesting that concentrating development time there may be a wasted effort.

The google market might be a waste, but I wonder how the amazon appstore will do now with the kindle fire.

Figues like this make me happy to have switched from BlackBerry to WP7. It’s nice to finally be on a platform that feels like it’s constantly changing and improving.

WP7 has passed the Appworld market for a long long time…

On the 150000 “apps” in the appworld, more than 70% are ringtones, wallpapers etc.. There’s very few Apps in the appworld.

I like the revenue from pubcenter, my futures apps will continue to be free, even the games.

Am I the only one that sees a pink line?? 4th is Ovi store and WP7 is 5th (that also makes Symbian the 3rd largest platform and WP7 4th).

That graph is wrong. It suggests Windows Phone has abotu 20,000 apps when we know it has aout double that 40,000-odd.

The graph only shows the number of free apps. Why surur chose that picture, I don’t know. :)

None in the report were really very illustrative.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/George-Karakatsiotis/530107274 George Karakatsiotis

The first graph of the report is just fine (the one that shows “the number of available apps in the US per month” -page 3). It clearly shows that the order of the app stores is:
          - iphone
          - andoid
          - ipad
          - app world
          - ovi store
          - wp7
          - amazon

And as we can see we have some ground to cover before we reach the appworld and ovi store. I love WP7 and I believe that nowdays it has all the must-have apps, but if we want to be realistic there is much work to be done.

Anybody can fill their store with ringtones and themes, which is why Distimo looked at the most significant category, games when they said:

The Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is now the fourth largest app store when looking at the total number of available games, having surpassed both the Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World. The Amazon Appstore – larger than both the Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World as well in terms of available games – is now the fifth largest app store for games.

IMHO claiming “The Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is now the fourth largest app store when looking at the total number of available games, having surpassed both the Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World” is different to “Distimo report finds the WP7 Marketplace has passed Blackberry App World” or even “Distimo has confirmed in their monthly report that Marketplace is now the 3rd largest app platform, after iOS and the Android Marketplace”…

It’s a graph of *free* apps.

And I though the Ovi Store was pretty barren. Call me when WP7 at least surpassed Ovi … I think that will be the real test. WP7 seems to be picking up speed in Q4, but other than that Ovi has had a much better growth this year. Not bad for a dead platform.

Well, Ovi/Nokia store has been up and running since June 2009 – it should have more apps than Marketplace;  but, the quality of apps, not to mention the plethora of themes in Ovi/Nokia Store, is nothing to brag, or sing, about.  And no, Nokia store doesn’t have the Kindle App! Nor the Evernote App, or PvZ; I could go on and on about what is lacking in that store, which is almost 3 years old!

Just wait until Windows 8 hits and becomes part of this line…
