Don’t call it a come back–HTC Radar 4G the 3rd best seller on T-Mobile USA in November and December 2011

radarbest

Canaccord Genuity has released some data which they think indicates that the iPhone sales are still very strong.

What the table actually tells us however is that Microsoft’s recent strategy to target the mid-range with quality handsets may be working in bringing some volume to Windows Phone 7.

The seldom-lauded HTC Radar 4G on T-Mobile USA has been the third best selling on that network for the last 2 months, only behind the Samsung Galaxy 2 and the HTC Amaze. It is the first time we have had clear 3rd party verification that a Windows Phone 7 handset is performing well in the market.

The handset is also the 3rd highest rated handset on T-Mobile, after the Samsung Galaxy S II and Nokia Lumia 710, with a score of 4.8 out of 5 with 106 reviews.

The data may indicate that the release of the  Nokia Lumia 710 in USA may not be such a stupid idea after all, and may pull in the millions of users Windows Phone 7 desperately needs.

I was shocked when I went on T-mobile dot com and saw a Windows Phone on the front page and the reviews across all carriers and on Amazon wireless is astounding.  I am seeing a turn around here .. slow and steady may actually work for Microsoft.

    • Anonymous

I think it would have always been slow and steady. People don’t change their phones on a dime, it takes time. I never expected WP to have a huge marketshare in a few months, it’s simply impossible since people don’t change their phone every day, or even month. Gaining a % or less every month is actually really fast growth.

Individuals don’t change their smartphone everyday but when you look at a population of individuals you do see a lot of phones being sold each and every day. It looks like Apple averaged a million phones a week in the US last quarter (according to the Canaccord study), and Android certainly sold an equal number (if not more). That’s a lot of phones.

Its actually way more than 106 reviews. I have the Radar its a great device!

well this explains that the Radar being out of stock at the stores I went to was not a fluke.

WP has a much stronger relative value proposition in mid-end phones than Android. Low-end, WP can’t compete on price. High-end hardware is always going to be more cutting edge on android and the high speeds blitz through any software deficiencies. But there’s a lot of volume and money to be had in the mid-end anyway. The only thing you don’t get is the halo effect of top end devices. E.g. people like Samsung GS2, can’t afford it so buy Samsung Galaxy Ace, you don’t have that effect here.

Well, people will like Lumia 900, if they can’t afford, they can buy the 800 or 710. It’s LUMIA HALO EFFECT!

What do you mean can’t compete at low end? Virtually all WPs were free during holiday season with carrier contract. Even now, you can find several WPs for a penny at Amazon wireless website. Hardware has never been an issue on Windows Phone as far as user experienc is concerned. The only thing Microsoft needs to address is add some more 32GB models.

      • Anonymous

Agreed, but add some MORE 32GB models?  Name one that is available?  They need to INTRODUCE a 32GB model.

Check out the Toshiba Fujitsu IS12T Windows Phone for Japan. 32GB model that has been out there for like 6 months now! It’s also water and dust proof!

This article pertains to the US.  I speak only to what’s relevant according to what the article is about.  Since the IS12T is out of reach (locked to KDDI), who gives a shit if it has 32GB?  Mind you it was announced 6 months ago as a JAPAN SPECIFIC device.  It’s not certified by US carriers.  On another note, from the hands-on previews I’ve read and videos I’ve watched, the IS12T is a crappy 3G only device with only an LCD (yes, L-C-D) screen, so it could have 128GB … still wouldn’t want it.  At 13.2 MP with crappy optics, I don’t care how large the pictures are going to be if the definition in them sucks.  Even though I don’t mind only using the very good 3G service on Verizon in my locale, carriers will be quick to mostly work with OEMs that put LTE in their devices going forward.  I’d likely turn off LTE on any new device I get, but carriers won’t be interested in the IS12T in its current configuration, and as a user who wants a better device all-around than only having 32GB to justify the purchase, I’m not interested in the IS12T.

Nokia 710 $0.01 at Costco … and it doesn’t have lag like all low-end Androids.  Seems pretty competitive.

The only carrier that doesn’t have the iPhone has instead a Windows phone in the top 3. If T-mobile had the iPhone this would not be the case.

Wish they gave more than the top 3 phones. I’m curious if any Windows Phones are in the top 5 or top 10 on AT&T.

The HTC Radar and the Samsung Focus Flash were the only two phones I actually saw commercials for on TV.

I bet AT&T has at least one phone near the top of the charts. I wouldn’t expect the CDMA carriers to have any WP in the top given their lack of 2nd gen phones and selection.

If you sort AT&T and Amazon by customer reviews then Windows Phones are all right up at the top. Customer satisfaction if very high for virtually every Windows Phone on every carrier. Sprint signed their business over to Apple this Holiday season so they aren’t supporting Windows. Verizon is probably pissed about the AT&T exclusivity deal so they don’t want Windows Phone and T-Mobile is not sure of the future since their AT&T deal fell thru. You can tell T-Mobile stopped everything with the assumption they would be part of AT&T by now. All the carriers want you to buy LTE phones so you can suck data faster and pay for overages. I’m hoping there will be a Nokia ad during the Super  Bowl that causes riots for the Nokia Ace when it comes out.
