Facebook App Update: Hands-On Video

The Facebook app was just updated today, adding a ton of new features, a new UI, faster performance, groups support, and more!

After this update, I can actually recommend the Facebook app! That is, unless you need instant messaging… that’s still nowhere to be found. IM in the Messaging Hub is alright, but doesn’t work if you just added a new friend on FB.

But anyways, the app is faster and has a new user interface that brings the classic three notification icons from the desktop version of Facebook to the mobile app. Searching for someone you’re not friends with also seems to be more accurate (and shows results in the same order the desktop version would).

You can also view and post in your groups and pages (which used to be non-existent in the old app), and you can view “likes” on items, and most importantly control your posting privacy so you can choose who sees your status update! Also, I’m not sure if this was there before, but you can view your Notes too.

Check out the greatly improved Facebook app in the Marketplace now, and show your Android and iPhone friends how slick the app looks!

BTW, if you are waiting for the update to show up, it is pretty simply to force by following these instructions at MobilityMinded here.

About Andrew Bares

As an avid gamer, I see the Windows Phone as a solid platform for mobile gaming. I will review almost every WP7 game and give you an idea if it is worth your money or not! In addition to gaming, I have been using Windows Mobile since 2005, and understand just about everything there is to know about the Windows Phone platform. Xbox Gamertag: DirtSurfer07 (add me!)

still no pinning of important stuff. i can’t care less about the app per se. i would just love to be able to pin stuff like certain groups to a tile and see if there are updates in there (and maybe pin pokes, and see updates there?! yes, i’m a poker)

and yes, chat works just fine in the os, just sync in the e-mail & accounts your fb if you added someone some minutes before.

Can we post on event walls?

BTW, do you guys realized that news feed on the facebook app and the what’s new under the People Hub are different? Could it be due to the Facebook app is an official app while People Hub is not? And also it seems like What’s New in People Hub still showing all the games updates which I have already turned off but not on the Facebook app at least.

Not sure about your settings, but People Hub includes Twitter and Linked in, so it would look different from FB-only if you have those additional services logged in.

The privacy settings of your friends will also affect the “What’s New” Facebook feed in your People Hub. Unfortunately for me, quite a few of my friends have settings that block status updates from showing up in third-party apps like the People Hub in Windows Phone. For this reason, I hardly use it to check Facebook anymore. :(

Likewise. Facing the same issue. I think I will use the Facebook more for now since it is much usable than last time. People Hub is like getting less useful for me already, and it is flooded with game notices too.

Yeah, it seems my People Hub is filled with articles from pages that I like instead of posts from my actual friends since many of them block status updates from third party apps. It seems the only way that this will change is if Facebook allows the People Hub to be considered a first party app – one can always hope… In the meantime, I mainly use it to check Twitter.

Where can I see people’s birthdays?

    • https://profiles.google.com/christopher.gull/ CG

That’s already in the WP7′s built-in calendar? At least on my phone it is.

      • Anonymous

Only upcoming FB events show up on my calendar :(

        • https://profiles.google.com/christopher.gull/ CG

In the calendar’s setting I can activate “Birthday Calendar”. It claims it comes from Windows Live, but actually the birthdays come from Facebook. The only annoying thing is that the phone notifies me of every single birthday. I wish it would only show in the calendar, not also remind me of all of them.

I’m very happy with this new version, I can finally post photos with privacy settings to facebook, I was really missing this on the WP!!! There was one app that said that it could do it but didn’t work, even that it cost .99 euro.

The only thing I really miss on WP now is Skype!! Yes, it
can always better but I would be very happy. Local apps and especially
financial apps from banks are missing but not that important for me.

Wasn’t the app made by Microsoft and not Facebook?

  • Patrick A.

Where is the link to “Events”? I can not view all my events and birthdays anymore :-(

    • http://bravesoul.myopenid.com/ BraveSoul

I just realized that it is missing too….

      • http://twitter.com/twfink2009 Tim Fink

I still had Events pinned to my start menu from the old app. It still works, but as you mentioned, there’s no way to re-pin it if I delete it. News Feed is the same. No way to pin it.
