First Tegra smartphone coming in Q4 2009

According to The Street, a Nvidia Tegra powered smartphone will reach the market as soon as Q4 2009. In an interview with Mike Rayfield, the general manager of Nvidia’s mobile unit, Mike said he expects the company’s Tegra chip to debut in a phone from one of the top five cell-phone makers as early as the fourth quarter of this year.

While The Street and everyone else is speculating an Android device, we know of at least one Tegra-powered Windows Mobile device coming this year, the Windows Mobile 6.5 WVGA 600 Mhz Nvidia AP16 HTC SuperStar.  While HTC is not yet a top 5 cell phone company, they are at certainly top 5 when it comes to smartphones.

the way thats worded it makes me think we’ll see tegra slip into 2010…or never at the pace they’re going so far

my contract still has 10 more months before i can get the upgrade price so…though i want the omnia2 coming to verizon (and may pay outright for it) i can wait until 2010 for this…or i may wait longer for a winmo 7 device with a capacitive screen (could be waiting an eternity!), which im banking on the superstar having that with this tegra chip!! :)

it’s more likely that manufacturers will put in resistive touch screens for wm7 since wm is still considered a business type os, and also asia is the main buyer for wm phones as they use the stylus a lot to input data :| so i guess seeing a wm phone with a capacitive screen is very unlikely, unless ms completely re-do wm7 to not use stylus/nail input (like inputting a contact’s info).

I would like to see support for capacitive screens though.. so we can at least get kickass devices. Honestly at this point I would like to see the ZuneHD become a phone with a higher resolution screen. I just cant believe that WM would be neglected while zune and xbox and windows get kickass upgrades.

Yea, who wouldn’t want to see a wm device with a capacitive screen. But then again, if they ever get into relying on capacitive screens, that would completely change who they are. People would want them to change their os completely, and thus make them change the os to look a lot like apple’s, which then people would start to complain to why ms “copied” apple.

This is what Im holding out for, although preferably a WM7 + Tegra dual launch would be even better.
