First Windows Mobile 6.5 devices coming in third quarter 2009

With the official announcement of the new Windows Mobile system coming in a few weeks time, Digitimes reports that the first Windows Mobile 6.5 devices are coming during the third quarter of 2009.

Although a number of Windows Mobile 6.5-based mobile devices are expected to hit the market in the third quarter of 2009, most makers are likely to launch their Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets in the fourth quarter for the year-end shopping season, the sources projected.

Sources also claim that Microsoft will not focus its efforts on specific handsets, but instead will continue its current business model and cooperate with multiple device makers for better diversification.

Why does it take so long, oh dear

  • phonedude

By the 3rd quarter of 2009???,,,,WTF?? LOL. Man MS you need to wake the frak up.

By then you will have fallen so far behind, no one will care abour WM. You need something now, now in frakin quater 3 of 2009.

This is why as a long time user of WM, I have left. WM is just asleep at the wheel and has left its customers hangin with little or no OS hopes.

I turned to the dark side and got me an apple3G.

After using it a month, all I can can say is Frak Windows Mobile.

By Quarter 3 of 2009, the game will be over. To bad MS is to dumb to realize that.

So if this story is true, when the hell will we see Windows Mobile 7, my guess would be end of 2010 at the earliest. Based on this story I will be hanging onto my iPhone 3G for quite some time, well actually maybe not as I am sure Apple will have released two more top spec devices before then for me to uograde too. Come on Microsoft

  • Trini_Man

Do you think its Microsoft ? or the hand set makers . I am pretty sure microsoft has given the OEMs 6.5 @ least by now. Guess it takes time to test with their hardware and make their custom tweeks and apps. With all the different hardware types windows mobile goes on it much more harder to stream line the release process. Apple and others dont have this problem. All I have to say is It better be worth the wait I need an upgrade :)

  • nuke1

It’s time to move on from WM…

    • Rovex

Well even 6.1 is the best mobile OS, so i dont see the need to move on just yet, especially since no competitor offers the full range of things many of us need or want. True Q3 is a bit of a wait (if true), but its possible we will see ROMS for current models before that.

I think we all have to relax:p

When I posted this story (and even I now) I think it is good news.

Given the time it takes for manufacturers to adopt a new OS, Q3 sounds really good! Besides, xda-developers will have custom ROMS for some devices in half the time…

    • http://www.wmpoweruser.com marios96

      How wrong could I be???

Half the time? Make that a 1/9 of the time!!!:p

      • nuke1

I’ve calmed down now  .

  • colin

and all of these things winmo can do now…
im ok with 6.1…i just want the latest and greatest :)
    my omnia is ROCK solid!

    • wreiad

      Yes it is!

  • Chris

I agree that the wait is ridiculous and will set MS back even further in the mobile OS wars.

However, I don’t quite understand how readers of this blog could even think about using an iPhone. To me the iPhone has no more features than any dumbphone out there. It is basically today’s Moto Razr. I would assume most of the readers of this blog to be power users, and thus not able to deal with such a gimped phone.

If you guys were saying you might jump ship for the Pre (or even to a lesser extent Android), I could understand. But the iPhone????? That’s breaking on hilarious!

  • J

Like Aleis I’d like to know if you’ll be able to upgrade your present phone from 6.1 to 6.5 and then later 7? I’ve just bought a Touch Diamond and will be using it for atleast 2 years, would be a shame if I couldnt upgrade the OS when it comes out…

    • Chris

      @J and @Alexis

Official updates are put out by HTC if unlocked or by your carrier if they bought through a carrier. If you have a new device that came with WM6.1 running, you can more than likely expect a WM6.5 update, but I doubt you will see an official WM7 update.

Furthermore, carrier phones will likely get updates before HTC bought phones.

And lastly, XDA-developers.com is the place you want to go to if you want unofficial updates. More than likely XDA will have an update for your phone months before the official updates are ever released. They will also more than likely be the only people to provide you with updates past WM6.5.

  • aleis

to be honest, i would prefer an xda updated rom.
cause they are in our community and understand our gripes.
    like less bloat!
    kitchens!
    gps unlocked!
so…from what i understand, a rom needs to be released then the real hackers…i mean developers can get to work on some cool winmo goods! :)

In measuring it, Microsoft is the one taking a lot longer to come out with a new OS than Palm. You know what that meant to Palm’s bottom-line.

    What did Microsoft start, yesterday?

Its obvious none of the people here ranting about moving from WM to iPhone actually develop products for phones and mobile devices. If they did, you would know how inferior the APIs are in iPhone, Palm and even Blackberry, to Windows Mobile. iPhone? Not likely to take over yet. Too many 3rd party components don’t run on it yet. Embedded databases, security packages, multimedia apis, etc. iPhone not only has to take WM market share, but RIM market share – or better put, iPhone has to crack the professional market.

The Windows Mobile API is a 500lb gorilla, so Microsoft might be losing a bit of ground timewise, but they still have the best Mobile development environment on the planet (Visual Studio) and a common API with the post popular consumer product OS in Windows. Even Blackberry’s JDE / Eclipse plugin doesn’t come close. I write apps for both and the difference is real.
