Fujitsu IS12T to be a premium product, $460 on 2 year contract, $960 unlocked

image

If anyone has been labouring under the misconception that Windows Phone 7 mango handsets will be cheap the recently leaked price of the Fujitsu IS12T will came as a rude awakening.

One of KDDIs subsidiary stores posted the price list for the device, and it shows the handset to be $958 off contract, $753 for new subscribers and $458 on a two year contract, with new subscribers getting the handset for $252.

Of course all this does buy one a 13 megapixel camera and 32 GB of storage in a dual CDMA and GSM device, not to mention available in multiple colours and waterproof, but even for the Japanese market the price appears on the expensive side.

Of course ultimately, if we want all the features we have to pay for them also, but certainly the high price of this handset will not help it undercut similar Android offerings.

    US dollars?

  • J A

I assume this is in US$, if so, it makes no sense. Itg will only be used by Fujitsu executives then because nobody else will buy it at those outrageous prices. Fujitsu is not ready to compete.

    • http://www.columnbreak.com columnbreak

Fujitsu is already competing in Japan with or without this phone. They don’t intend to release this phone overseas.

  • Anonymous

They might as well cancel the product now. Those are astronomical numbers for a smart phone. $460 with a two year contract? That’s insanse. This is a phone that doesn’t have dual core, FFC, or qHD resolutions.

    • Anonymous

You shop for phones in Japan often and know what’s cheap and what’s expensive there?  Just curious.

      • http://www.columnbreak.com columnbreak

That’s one of the things I do when I visit Japan, and I can tell you that the price for this phone is on the same level as many other phones that any of the carriers offer over there. It’s a totally different market over there, and people outside of that demographic just don’t understand it.

Lul what? I was considering this device as a cheap holiday/beach phone if anything….

One partner down. Lets hope Samsungs offering will be a bit more “solid”.

    • http://www.columnbreak.com columnbreak

You wouldn’t be able to use it even if you were to buy it. Phones in Japan are notoriously known for being extremely difficult to unlock. You also wouldn’t be able to buy it from a third-party store because practically all cell phones for the Japanese market are only sold through cell phone carriers. In this case, it’s not really “one partner down” because it’s not even an option unless you live in Japan.

      • Mike P

Hmm fair enough! I guess if they release it in the west it will be lower in price, but now I cannot imagine it being priced lower than expected.

  • http://twitter.com/oslicek David Petrla

    DOA. Let’s hope it’s a mistake.

    • Anonymous

why? because the phone is reasonably priced and in line with other devices on the same network?

      • http://twitter.com/oslicek David Petrla

Phones are more expensive than in the USA here in Czech Republic. (On the other side they are NEVER locked to just one carrier, even if they are subsided.)

But the prices were falling down mainly thanks to Android in the recent years and are now much lower than this Japan price, although still pricier than in the USA.

So while I understand it I still find it quite weird. Perhaps my emotion was “Hey, it’s like a typical Czech high-end smartphone price two years ago!”

        • Anonymous

Yeah but this is sold in Japan so you can’t judge it’s price by the US or Czech markets…

          • http://twitter.com/oslicek David Petrla

            Sure.

    • http://twitter.com/oslicek David Petrla

      From the WPCentral discussion:

      http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/iphone_en/price_plan/standard_price_plan/

      “A 32Gb iPhone4 with 2 year contract effectively costs the user $750…”

      • Anonymous

Exactly, so like i said this phone is incredibly well priced for the market it is in.

      • Anonymous

        Hey… that’s my comment ;)

Anyway if people are surprised by the price of this phone in Japan and assume this will be the price in their home market then I wonder what they would think once they see how much more other commodities, say like a car, cost in Japan. Compare apples to apples people… or should I say oranges to oranges?

Like UNCF says: “A mind is a terrible thing to waste…”

Are Japan prices communicated with VAT included?

I need 32GB, but this is too expensive indeed.

  • http://www.columnbreak.com columnbreak

Here’s exactly what I posted on WPCentral ~30 minutes ago:

From what I’ve seen in the past at cell phone stores in Japan, the price is
pretty much in line with other offerings, and in some cases, cheaper than other
    phones.

    • http://www.columnbreak.com columnbreak

Japan’s cell phone market is vastly different than other countries’. Many people buy phones to match their fashion and style, not when they desperately need one or are finished with their contract. Therefore, the cell phone companies over there can demand these kinds of prices because a) people will buy them, and b) the device market is more competitive.

  • Anonymous

Assuming this isn’t a mistake, it seems mighty expensive for crap hardware. Devices need to be $200 retail for me. No excuses. 13MP camera is useless without the sensor to back it up. Plus I assume the CPU is still too slow to capture HD video without stuttering. 32GB also seems redundant if it comes at a price like this handset.

For god’s sake, just take the Nokia N8, the Motorola Defy and roll it into an upgraded Omnia 7 frame and everything will be alright. Both the N8 and the Defy have perfected their respective features (camera and environmental protection) without impacting the price too much. If it impacts the price, you’re doing it wrong. Drop it.

    • http://www.columnbreak.com columnbreak

Japan and the U.S. have drastically different cell phone markets.

  • Anonymous

Yeah this headline is very skewed.  First of all they don’t use US dollars in Japan, and secondly, prices for phones in other markets vary greatly relative to the US market.  From what I’m hearing these prices are not vastly different than many other offerings currently in Japan.

When you are going to buy a phone from Japan, everything is expensive. Even a flip phone over there tend to be 600 dollars and up. Fashion hurts you know.

    • http://www.columnbreak.com columnbreak

Exaaaactly! Phones are about fashion in Japan. People outside of that demographic just don’t get it.

  • Anonymous

How expensive are phones is Japan though??? This might be considered average over there, not to mention the fact that the US dollar has lost a lot of value over the last couple of months, even to the Yen.
