Fujitsu WP7 handset a rebranded Android device with 12 megapixel camera

I do not know if its a good or bad thing, given that some Android handsets have fantastic hardware, but it seems much of the new WP7 Mango handsets are Android devices with brain transplants.

Such is the case with the mystery Fujitsu handset, which appears to be a rebranded Fujitsu Regza T-01C.  That device is also waterproof to one meter and has a massive 12.2 megapixel camera.  It is likely safe to say the same features will carry over to the Windows Phone 7 handset.

If the device will have near identitcal hardware, it will also confirm the specs we speculated about a few days ago.  The Regza has a 4 inch LCD screen, just as we predicted, and also has 3 hardware buttons in front, again as we predicted.

Hopefully the hidden specs of the Regza handset, such as NFC and DLNA support will also carry over into its Windows Phone 7 sibling.

Is it just me that thinks the two devices arent actually the same?

Judging by the pictures, even if its the same internals, thats more than just a re-branded phone, thats a whole new casing. The button placement & overall shape are slightly different :c

Rebranded may be the wrong word, but recycled is even worse.

      • Anonymous

How do you know its recycled?

        • Dhaoracle

I say that they recycled from the WPMango because I saw it with WP7 first and then Android so they came in second..

    • Anonymous

I agree that there are slight differences, including the screen bezel at the top.

      • arok

And touch buttons instead of the physical ones on Android device.

The floodgates have finally opened. In the next batch of WP7′s, OEM’s seem to want to outdo each other with awesome hardware. It’ll be a tough choice come this fall.

  • Manu

I don’t feel that the floodgates have opened. We’re seeing recycled Android phones as WP7 phones. We need to see new phones, with bold and interesting designs, that are unique to WP7. The Dell Venue Pro was that at launch, but the issues with supply and then firmware crippled that.

      + NFC & DLNA
      + water resistan body

      Can you ask for more?

      • Anonymous

I can ask for it not to be hot pink. I can also ask it not be so damn ugly.

It’s a waterproof phone. It needs to be colorful so you don’t lose it on the beach.

          • Dhaoracle

That iiish is funny.. lol you get 1+ point for that…

      • Anonymous

Unfortunately, it’s for the Japanese market, where those specs are pretty basic

      • mrjlwilliams

Yes. For it to be made by HTC or Samsung. Lol.

    • Just Visiting

Agree. I’m beginning to think that the oem’s philosophy is to just create a ‘shell’ device and then put Android OS on it with ‘x’ internal specs, then put WP on it with ‘y’ internal specs. Perhaps this is profitable/efficient for them, but the lack of originality or wanting to offer one of kind distinction (from a physical design/aesthetic standpoint) is just lazy. Even Nokia, if they release the ‘Sea Ray’, will have gone the ‘rehash’ route.

      • Anonymous

Why wouldn’t they do this? Doing it this way lowers the cost to them and should lower the cost to the consumer. They still have to follow the specs set by Microsoft but if they already have an Android phone that meets the spec, why reinvent the wheel? Non-techy consumers won’t know the difference.

        • Just Visiting

As I stated, it probably is profitable/efficient for the oem’s to rehash a look. Regardless of the cost to the oem, is still likely to be subsized at the standard prices we see across the board today; and I doubt the increase of cost to a handset for the consumer would have anything to do with the look of the device…the internal specs of the device is more likely to drive the price upwards. Nonetheless, a device designed from a aesthetic standpoint to solely house WP (or Android) for that matter would be welcomed.

          • Paul

Agree. But for now, just having WP7 devices that aren’t a year behind Android from a specs prespective would be a win.

    • Anonymous

You can decide to make a whole new “BOLD” design like the Kyocera Echoe and have just a handful of enthusiasts who would want to buy it or just make a normal design which is sure to sell. Aks yourself why Apple keeps making similar phones year after year. .. no one wants to change a winning team..

For me its good as long as the wp7 isn’t like 6 months to a year behind its good. if it has similar internal everyone will get to see how fast and snappy wp7 handsets are compared to android and that good for the platform.

    • NatusimiJ

Hate to admit it but it looks better as a Android phone then WP7

  • http://twitter.com/mayor4reel martins

this is a sad trend..every windows phone out there is based on another model the manufacturer already has. There is no original device design. nokia “sea ray” = nokia n9 hw, htc hd7 = htc evo hw, samsung focus (focus 2?) = samsung galaxy s(s2). I wish one of this device makers would actually invest in r&d and design an original device.

    • Anonymous

Omnia 7 is like no other

      • Anonymous

Do they even share the same internals though? I thought the focus had the same qualcomm chipset as other WP7 devices as opposed to the hummingbird/powervr combo of the SGS phones.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ricardo-Dawkins/746307628 Ricardo Dawkins

HTC HD7 is an evolution of the Windows Mobile based HD2.

    • Guest

htc mozart, trophy, surround, samsung omina 7? they are all original desings.

  • Anonymous

Thats what will make Nokia look stronger. I wouldn’t have a problem if they were released at the same time

  • Anonymous

The device on the left is actually made by Toshiba, not Fujitsu. They may share the same mobile devision (Fujitsu Toshiba mobile), but the new phone is a branded a Fujitsu phone, not a Toshiba phone, so I’m almost 100% the phone is not a rebranded Regza phone. I’ve held a Regza phone, and outside of the colors it looks quite different than the leak we saw. And when he held it in his hand, it looks different size-wise from the Regza phone; the Regza phone is quite large in the hand.

Plus, your source link doesn’t even say it’s a rebranded phone; it just says they look similar.

  • http://twitter.com/Summerclaw Hansel

The Android one looks a lot better on the press shot. It seems less glossy. I’m sad that we are not getting more original stuff but this phone will never come out to the states, so I don’t care.

  • http://twitter.com/mrcraggle Craig Osborne

So apart from the casing, the screen placement, the bezel, and the buttons it’s the exact same phone :O

The REGZA isn’t even available outside of Japan to begin with.

  • http://twitter.com/mobileserver Gibson Wong

So they all recycle their phone to be used as WP7 phone now?
First the HTC, then Samsung, then Nokia and now Fujitsu.
WP7 is now second class citizen.

    • Guest

Or the battle is quickly moving to software, as it did in PCs once a certain hardware capability was reached.

  • Anonymous

Recycled Android devices isn’t a bad thing at all … If anything, it allows faster production, and less time spent on planning an design … until Windows Phone grabs enough marketshare for manufacturers to actually spend time on unique devices …

  • Mark

I don’t have a problem with other OEMs recycling their Android hardware if it means equivalent phones with WP7 get in the market faster, instead of lagging by a year or more. The only one that surprises me, and is a bad way, is Nokia. They really need to blow everyone out of the water. And if the rumors are right that they’re just recycling another phone, that’s not smart for their first WP& effort.

    • rsgx

      Agreed.

Lets hope they aren’t all like that, this is disappointing.

  • rsgx

That’s what I’ve been saying – ALL the other OEMs are fucking lazy. They don’t innovate any new handsets, and certainly ones that are newer or better than the current Android offerings.

    Nokia FTW

  • Monkey D Black

so the 16mega pixel HTC device we saw in the leak ad looks like it could be real then. interesting.
