Full specs of the Windows phone 7 HTC Mozart leaked

A kind tipster has sent us this video of the HTC Mozart in action (which we have seen before) and also the full specs of the device, which we have not.

He confirms the device runs a 1GHzQualcomm QSD 8250, with 512 MB  ROM and 8GB storage, 576 MB RAM, a 3.7-inch WVGA Super LCD display, 8MP CMOS camera and LI-PO 1300 mAh battery.

The frequencies supported are Dual mode UMTS/HSPA (2100/900) and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), so basically European frequencies.

The flash is confirmed as Xenon, and the phone supports Audio DSP with SRS and Dolby Mobile.

Are our readers satisfied, or does the 8 GB storage rankle? Let us know below.

Thanks LVBDLPD for the tip.

Does it really use the QSD 8250? I mean it's almost 2 years old and there is a new generation available like the one used in the HTC Desire HD (Wikipedia claims on the Snapdragon page that the HTC Mozart will use the MSM 8655 which would be much more power efficient).

  • http://www.twitter.com/CrisRowlands CrisRowlands

I wish there was a bit more storage space.
8 seems a bit small for modern everyday needs, considering the lack of expansion.
I think 16GB would do me fine though.
    32 would be perfect ;)

  • Arne Helseth

According to a source of mine (MS employee) all handsets released close to launch (ie. launch models) will use the same CPU. Since we have already seen FCC documentation showing at least one handset will sport the 8250 it's fair to assume this goes for all of them.

If true (and I'm not saying it is – this is simply what my source said) the first CDMA handsets we will get should be based on the 8650 processor. Something, which again, we have seen FCC documentation for.

No way I will be replacing my HTC HD2 (which, incidentally, uses the same 8250 CPU) with a new handset employing the exact same processor and likely a similar screen etc.

  • PaddyParker

Interesting. Those specs suggest to me that the HD7 is not the HTC Mozart as previously rumored.

Processor wise it looks weak, it should be at least the QSD8650 as used in the HTC Incredible.

    • l3v5y

Just because it's a bigger number, doesn't mean it's better.

The QSD8250 and QSD8650 are the same application processor at the same clock speed, just the QSD8650 has CDMA as well as GSM.

      • PaddyParker

Thanks for the info. Didnt know that. So is the QSD8250 the best chip available?

  • DaKo

    @ Arne Helseth

That would be really bad if true :( . According to some people the new processor used in the G2 or the on in the HTC Desire HD are faster (especially the graphics unit) and at the same time more power efficient. I know that Microsoft set the minimum system specs, but according to a Microsoft presentation the CPU has to be at least a "1 GHz ARM v7 'Cortex/Scorpion' or better processor". I wonder what Samsung will do as they have their own CPU (Hummingbird). I still have hope that there will be better processors at the start as I want to buy a WP7 handset next month here in Germany :) .

Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of this to be honest. I've asked my contact to clarify what he is actually saying.

Like you, I've also seen the documents stating "at least" a 1GHz processor and figured this would be where we would see a difference between lower and higher -end models, but now I'm not so sure. All the "confirmed" leaks we have point to a 1GHz processor being in place, everything pointing to faster CPUs are rumors at this stage.

I'm hoping to have some more info on this by the morning (CET) so will update then.

      • DaKo

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date. I wonder, however, what HTC will use for the HD7; the German price which leaked today is pretty high compared to other high-end smartphones here in Germany (more than 100 € more compared to the HTC Desire just for a bigger screen?).

        • http://www.facebook.com/helseth Arne Helseth

Ok, so after checking back with him (and going thru the facts as we know them) he's now giving me the runaround and basically saying "no comment".

As the guy doesn't hold a technical role within MS he could very well have been wrong and that's why he's now refusing to give a clear answer. Either that or he is correct but don't want to go public with it in so many words as it would mean a few of us holding off on purchases.

Oh well, sorry for having wasted everyones time with this, we'll find out soon enough what's what.

    • l3v5y

Hummingbird is a Cortex derived processor, so it's covered there. (Scorpion is the application processor in Snapdragon)

  • Arne Helseth

Yes, there will be several handsets available before xmas, no question there. What bothers me is the fact that there will be no lower-end handsets based on the processor. What my source said is that manufacturers are free to customize certain parts of the phone, such as screen, camera and speakers however the chipsets used are all the same.

Looking around at the leaks we've seen so far this all points towards the 8250 being employed in the launch models. This should be followed by the 8650 chip in 2011 when we start seeing CDMA devices running WP7.

I was always under the impression that Microsoft's chassi specs were minimal specs only, but from what I've been told now certain parts of those specs are to be followed exactly.

As for dual core snapdragons, the 1.2GHz models should already be available. The 1.5GHz chips come out next year though.

i find that the chrome (or silver paint) border tends to chip and look raggedy.__

    • bch

I have read that this is aluminum, not paint.

  • J Wong

can you install application on the 8GB storage?

    • l3v5y

AFAIK, the 8GB is all one partition, and it being fast or slow memory (or even a soldered down memory card) makes no difference. It's just one space of memory, and anything can go in it.

  • efjay

8GB, does HTC think we'll only be making phone calls on ths, no music, applications, movies? Complete waste of time. And whats with the obsession with faster CPU's, there will always be faster, waiting around for the "latest" will probably be a long one. WP7 doesnt seem to be suffering performance wise with the current Snapdragon, reports always mention how fast it is, are you moving at the speed of light and need the phone to keep up?

    • http://www.facebook.com/helseth Arne Helseth

It's not about waiting for faster/better processors around the corner – it's about not sticking a 2 year old CPU in a brand new product when there are already dual-core 1.2GHz processors available.

So what if the UI is silky smooth, having a faster processor would help with video playback etc.

  • bch

8 GB seems too little, unless you consider that you can stream movies with Netflix; stream nearly an infinite collection of music with Zune Pass; and download photos as needed off Facebook and Skydrive. Still, 16 GB would be better.

    • efjay

We shouldnt have to spend extra on a monthly subscription service when we probably have gigabytes of music that we own. And taking pictures would fill up the space as well. 8Gb is too small, no way around it.

      • l3v5y

I suspect we'll see 16GB (or more) variants. This is one leaked phone, not an entire range.

For most purposes though, 8GB is more than enough.

    • ambryde

you can use microsd card. an extra8gb can be had for 10 bucks

  • asdf

8GB is a damn joke, how do they expect to compete with apple when they start at double the size at 16gb for $199.

    • http://www.facebook.com/helseth Arne Helseth

Yeah, the 16GB iPhone for $199 is a 2-year contract phone though, buy it straigt out and you'll be paying $599… The HTC HD7 (whatever that may be in terms of hardware) is expected to run around $100 on a similar length contract.

  • Lennard

what kind of small storage is that? it can't compete.

  • Diego!

So if HTC Mozart has european 3G bands… I guess we will see HTC Schubert in America? Gee… how come we don't have a HTC roadmap leaked already?

  • djguapo

I really hope we don't see same thing happening with Microsoft as with KIN, that they justified the petty storage with the Zune Pass/cloud storage nonsense. I want to listen to MY own music, and look at MY own pictures at any time. I mean, what happens when you're in an area with no signal, like an airplane? I swear, we better have a 32gig phone.

  • l3v5y

    Unless it's a controlled leak.

  • Tony Monza

The 8 GB storage is pathetic. 32 GB as standard! Thanks!

The LI-PO 1300 mAh battery is pathetic also. Can we have decent battery life please?
2 full days of battery life shall be standard too.

  • Tony Monza

Oh, and the silver paint frame is really ugly. Looks like a very cheap phone.

  • Joeki

The Windows Phones 7's are coming with Mirco SD support. So I'd assume that we'll be able to expand and store our files on cards.
