Garmin StreetPilot now in Marketplace!

gs3 gs2 gs1

Its been a long wait to finally get a mature turn by turn GPS navigation solution in Marketplace, and Garmin surprised us by being the first to deliver.

Garmin StreetPilot is now in Marketplace for a hefty $39.99, but unfortunately still does not include fully installed maps.  Maps can however be downloaded ahead of time to the phone for the relevant route.

See the app description and feature list after the break.

Download Garmin StreetPilot® and get Garmin® navigation, similar to the premium features on Garmin’s renowned nüvi® personal navigators. Designed exclusively for your Windows Phone, this application works on both 3G and EDGE networks and turns your device into a GPS navigator with turn-by-turn voice-prompted directions.
With Garmin StreetPilot®, you’ll always have access to the most up-to-date map data available. And to minimize data usage, maps are downloaded on demand for areas relevant to your route. Garmin StreetPilot® also includes real-time traffic updates at no extra cost. So you’ll know which areas to avoid as you travel.

Garmin StreetPilot® stores map data on your device so you can continue to view route details as you travel in and out of coverage areas. In addition, Garmin StreetPilot® lets you browse maps that have already been downloaded and stored on your device. Instead of downloading additional data for areas outside your travel area, Garmin StreetPilot® only accesses the map data you need to navigate your route.

Features include:
-Always up-to-date maps for the U.S. and Canada, downloaded to your device on demand
-Voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions including street names
-Real-time traffic updates included at no additional cost
-Automatic map storage so you can browse maps you’ve recently viewed outside of data coverage areas
-Works great at both 3G and Edge connection speeds
-Speed limits for most major roads
-Integrated Local Search
-Millions of points of interest
-Lane assist with junction view for complicated interchanges
-Address book integration to navigate to contacts
-Current weather conditions and forecast
-Place calls directly from search listing
-Navigate in both portrait and landscape mode
-Easy to install with quick load times

Garmin StreetPilot is $39.99 with no free trial and can be found in Marketplace here.

    only US?

Im sure it has a bunch of features the others dont have in the MP but its really hard to tell without a TRIAL. I will not pay 40.00 without a trial run.
Turn by Turn by GPS Tuner is more cosmetically pleasing from what I gathered from the screenshots and I dont think anyone cant touch Turn by Turn’s Voice clarity and volume. I do like garmin’s ability to search from your contacts for addresses.
I have been using Bing’s turn by turn and I really like it….I know it doesnt have a ton of features but it gets the job done.
Give me a trial and then I may purchase it.

Unless there is an option to download any map data, not just restricted to your planned route its not worth it for me. Turn by Turn can do that, so paying so much more doesnt make sense.

  • Ganon

If I could download all maps and the softwares was like my real gps device I definitly would buy this one but…. I’m not from US or Canada so.. :)

  • Azjerei

Haha! They are speeding on those images ;P

lol, you can got -10/+5 MPH on any highway with light to moderate traffic (puts down NYS drivers manual)

  • BENNE

I think I should have the option to download all maps or just my planned route. This would be the better way. So I could choose between wasting much memory, but have no roaming costs abroad OR storing just my route and keep my free memory – new routes can downloaded using my data plan…
    (sorry for my english…)

They have a lot to prove considering I get OVI Maps for free on my Symbian S60V5 phone, and Nokia has an offline map loader with maps of every country on earth. So no, still no incentive to move to WP7.

    • http://twitter.com/TheFightSayeth the pugnacious fight

Wait what? I’m assuming that since you have a Nokia phone, that you will wait for Nokia’s WP7 offering…how does this change that?

    • Anonymous

You do realize that OVI Maps is to be ported to WP7 right? The Nokia WP7 phone will even include it I believe.

Hopefully, the Ovi Maps will be free on Nokia devices, but as an app purchase for all non Nokia devices.

    No europe??? too bad..

The always up-to-date maps are nice. But I would like to download a map of the whole US.

Good thing I have T-Mobile, so I get Navigon for “free”. But at least this way I am not wasting bandwitdh/quota on navigation. :-/

Can I upload maps using Garmin’s MapSource? My country doesn’t have an official map for Garmin but it does have an unofficial map that can be easily installed onto Garmin GPS using MapSource

Way too expensive when there are comparable free versions already available. I have found Turn by Turn to be really great (and free).

  • http://twitter.com/TheFightSayeth the pugnacious fight

    OK, a couple of things:

-On demand traffic updates w/o subscription is great.
-I know people want a trial for anything about 2.99 on Windows Phones but come on, did you really think that you were going to get one from Garmin?! The App is 40 bucks here and 40 bucks on the iPhone AND I would bet good money that after Mango drops and the Address Book API’s are released that this app would get updated to allow address book integration.
-Hopefully this will make Navigon wake up and develop an app for WP7 (just so that you’re not all shocked it’s 35 bucks)
-Makes it very interesting to see what Ovi will look like/ cost for non-Nokia WP7s

    • http://twitter.com/caspian1010 Eric Ewing

It already offers address book integration. :-)

respect…they managed to get the ugliest map UI I have seen to date.

Wow, that is a really good news. There should be good maps for Russia. But, anyway, I’m waiting for Yandex.Maps. Almost sure it will be free and with free operator 3G traffic.

$40? no offline maps? I love Garmin but without the offline maps I am just not interested what-so-ever.

Turn by turn.. I download my map..and thats it I’m using that map no bandwidth being sucked loading maps as I drive about …. so why should I buy this one? how it this one better??

    • Anonymous

Turn by turn still needs data connection to route your destination. I can live without not having route destination, but when your destination (and other favorite markers) disappear as soon as you center your position, its pretty useless. You are also limited to one layer of map you download, so things will either get too chunky or too small.

This is too much to charge for a nav app, but I bought it anyway. Why?

I’m moving to a new city, and I want GPS functionality, now. I can’t wait for Mango, and I don’t want to mess around with a beta release that may or may not interfere with other apps.

First impression? I would actually rate it a notch below the free Google Navigation I used to have on Android. But it’s better than the AT&T licensed navigation app (w/ monthly fee), and it absolutely puts the other nav apps on the market to shame. GPS Voice Nav is gear if you know the address of your destination. If you want to search for someplace without opening a browser separately, you’re out of luck. I also found that it ran so slowly as to be nearly useless. Re-routing was erratic at best. “Turn-by-Turn Navigation” actually isn’t bad. If your needs are relatively light, it might be the best option. Its search feature isn’t wonderful, but at least it has one. On the minus side, the app loads painfully slowly, can be a bit laggy when running, and has occasionally crashed – such as when I tried to use the “download trip map for offline use” feature. It warned me that the operation would take some time. It didn’t warn me that it would never finish (even after an hour).

There’s just no comparison in quality. This app is the real deal. Unfortunately it’s priced accordingly (and then some).

    Totally subjective opinions:

    Google Nav: A-
    Garmin Street Pilot: B+
    AT&T Navigator: B-
    Turn-By-Turn Nav: C-
    GPS Voice Nav: D-
