Google Nexus One selling slower than Palm Pre?

sadandroid Google’s HTC made Nexus One is well known for not setting any sales records, but now Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is predicting sales that in this day and age can only be called abysmal.

Munster said in a research note:

While we view Google’s Nexus One as the most advanced Android phone available to date, we believe that based on checks from Piper Jaffray analyst Mike Walkley and data released by mobile analytics companies, the phone has not seen the same success in the market as the Droid and other alternatives. Previously we expected the phone would ultimately reach carrier stores for sale, which has not yet happened. Our prior estimate of 350k Nexus One’s sold in Q1 appears aggressive and we believe the number may be closer to 160k for Q1; this represents a $100 million reduction to top-line revenue, but a $0.06 improvement to earnings as we expect Nexus One to carry a lower operating margin than Google’s core search product, for which we increased estimates.

The handset was called the first “super smartphone” by Google, but has been plagued by issues such as poor screen responsiveness, poor daylight performance and lack of support by Google which has seen both enthusiasm and sales flag very soon after release.

weird, i swear i was on a windows mobile website. why are you reporting on the nexus one and comparing it to a palm pre? if you're going to report on google, why not mention how they're activating 60k android phones per day instead of trying to make it out like an ONLINE ONLY phone is selling bad

  • Chris

I think people are trying the Nexus one and the HTC branded Androids and seeing how ugly Android is without Sense. The Desire is doing well and is basically the same, just with Sense.

    • Gee

Stock Android isn't ugly; in fact, _Android_ Sense looks like a mess after using it for more than a couple of days. If you want to talk about ugly, lets talk about stock WinMo.

      • HD2

C'mon. Why are u comparing such a mature OS like WinMO with the new Android?? WinMO is already 6.5 now. This is no excuse for Android to be such a plain jane w/o the help of HTC Sense UI. Look at the stock clock for Android. So fugly!!

  • aleis

yeah honestly, the only phones i believe will "attract" new people to android, is the HTC sense phones.
cause i hate stock android. though…on the nexus one it is sexy :)

Where's the Windows Mobile? Why do I keep hearing about Kin and other Non-Windows Mobile stuff?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/mohsen7x8 mighty

Kin is actually called a Windows Phone (by Microsoft)

And there's not much news on windows "mobile" devices these days. And probably won't ever be…
Every manufacturer is waiting for WP7.

      • James Jones

I know it keeps stabbing me slowly why cant they just make a HD2 with a tilting keyboard i'd be complete for a while

  • gambit

Why do you guys keep hating on android? I'm using it on my TP2 and in a lot of ways I like it more than winmo. The experience is a lot more streamlined than winmo, and stock android looks great in my opinion. Haven't tried it with sense but I'm very tempted to get an android phone next. I'm really interested in WP7 as well but I'll have to try it out first.

    • Yuri Andropov

They usually hate on WinMo competitors here. My personal favorite was the photoshop of Steve Jobs face on a picture of Stalin a few years ago. It says a lot about Android that WMPU has switched from Apple-bashing to Android-bashing.

I'm interested in WP7, but I will miss a lot of the flexibility of WM6.x. In the meantime, Android is a nice compromise until I can actually check out WP7 in person. So far I'm loving my Nexus One.

      • James Jones

I dont mind Android i'm switching over to EVO 4G when it comes out the loss of keyboard and knowledge of WinMo is tragic but I blame Microsoft for not continuing on the true Windows Mobile

I've been playing with Android on my TP2 and i've found apps on Android that surpass even pay apps on WinMo I'm HTC proud so i'll always stay HTC

WP7 or Windows Phone 7 Series as it still should be called is a joke at lease to the techie at lease to the non-techie ya they'll love it gota make money somewhere cant have those billions going to waste

      • Jos Dewey

Hahahaha, Andropov is back from the dead commenting on Stalin. This is hilarious!

I remember that picture mate, it was real. Steve Stalin is one of Iosef's sons. He was adopted by the Jobs'S in America. Look it up, he's adopted for real.

I'm not surprised if the Nexus One is not selling well since your choices are subsidized through T-Mobile or pay the full price for the phone. But I am a long time WM developer, I've had more WM devices than I can count, and the Nexus One is a really, really good device. Not perfect, but it's pretty outstanding.
