HD2 Battery Life

This is one of the more hotly contended things about the HD2, some claim it’ll last days whilst others get barely get hours…

HTC Leo

I’ve only had the HD2 for a little over a day, but as far as I’ve seen so far, battery life is pretty good. I’ve been playing with it a lot with HSDPA (not switched it to GSM at all), some bluetooth file transfers, browsing the interwebs, taking lots of pictures, texting, calling, videos and listening to music for a few hours and generally showing off quite how awesomely fast it is, and it’s survived from 7:30 this morning till now. That’s a little under 7 hours which is pretty good for what I’d call very intensive use.

With things like Chainfires WMLongLife, and not deliberately trying to kill the battery, it could well do significantly longer, possibly up to two days. For my usage it’s fine as is, though you might want a second battery if you really need it to last more than a day!

My first impressions are very very very good! If you can live with the sheer size, it’s definitely the best Windows Phone out there, maybe even the best phone out there.

I apologise for the picture: it was taken with my Diamond as I couldn’t find my camera…

Thanks to Clove and WMPowerUser for supplying the device!

What do you mean by "this morning till now"? do you mean that it's forcing a shutdown now?

There seem to be three main issues with the HD2 so far:

    Battery life

    Pink spot in camera

    phantom screen inputs/hyper sensitive screen

Do you have any problems with the camera/screen?

At xda-devs many people are also having problems with SMS sending and receiving. Their HD2s just fail to send or receive any text message after a bit of use and only a soft reset fixes it.
That along with the issues you pointed out (specially the screen sensitivity one) are currently holding me back from buying an HD2 and I'm kinda disappointed. I hope HTC fixes these soon (that is if they fix them at all..)

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Foamy Foamy

Yeah it's starting to make me reconsider buying one now. I'm hoping that if i had big problems then i would get a replacement as many people already have done. I'll be making my final decision next week some time. should give enough time for some fixes or at least causes to be found.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/mohsen7x8 mighty

These seem to be software issues, so I'm afraid even getting the unit replaced won't solve them.
Myabe custom ROMs can help, but we'll have to wait coz there's still no HSPL available for Leo

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/Foamy Foamy

I was mainly referring to the camera issue but i wouldn't be surprised if the battery issues weren't all software. I wonder how many of these issues were there in the older builds of the leo rom.

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/mohsen7x8 mighty

Just read the thread about the camera issue. Now I'm even more disappointed.
Yesterday I worked with an HD2 for the first time and it was fabulous! Today I came to know about all these issues and I feel kinda crushed…

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/Foamy Foamy

Yeah i've been spending way to much time on xda reading about problems and how there's almost no fixes yet.

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Strangerx Strangerx

the camera thing can be 'fixed', there's a thread over at xda which talks about that subject.
about screen sensivity: well I dont know what they all have, first they consider resistive to be crap in terms of sensivity and now the overrate the sensivity? I will see if i get the random screen presses when I get mine (today/tomorrow), but i think it's just because the people are used to the resistive screen…
battery life – yea thats the main point that is distracting me, if it gets through a day, then i'm happy. else im gonna consider buying a 2nd battery :S

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Strangerx Strangerx

woah.. speaking of getting it today/tomorrow, I just went to check out my mail as the retailer said I should expect it today. Since it wasn't there 4hours ago I thought its coming tomorrow… Well it seems like they shipping company just put it in the mailbox instead of ringing on the doorbell (which they usually do..). Damn, good that I thought of checking the mailbox again, else I would only have seen it tomorrow (maybe I wouldnt have seen it at all, anybody can open the mailboxes and take packets out.. this is making me mad, fucking shipment..).

Anyway, I'll be back in a week, gotta fall in love with something. lol.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/mohsen7x8 mighty

'fixed' how ? I read the whole thread and there's still no real fix for it. They aren't even sure what causes it

Regarding battery life – My experience today with my HD2 is not that great. I took it off the charger this morning around 8 am. Downloaded a podcast via wifi, played the same podcast for about 30 minutes on my commute to work. Device on HSDPA, bluetooth on, wifi off, exchange push e-mail running, getting lots of e-mails via IMAP pull every 5 minutes, Windows Live push e-mail enabled, also using the HTC Peep client to get tweets every 15 minutes.

During the day I did about 10 minutes of browsing, 30 min of e-mail reading, listened to the rest of my podcast over lunch, made a few short calls and sent some texts.

Now at 16:00 battery is at 10%, I have turned of bluetooth, put the screen on minumum brightness, switched off all e-mail and twitter updates and expect the battery to last in this low power state for another 90 minutes likely.

In short, in my experience, to get full use out of the device you are going to need to either charge during the day, get an extended battery, or really moderate your use.

    • efjay

How many charge cycles have you done?

Also OT but can you do something about the site loading extremely slowly in PIE and Opera? When PIE tries to load the flash I get frequent out of memory errors from Adobe flash and it generally loads so slowly I have to close the browser to get my device back to normal. Using a TP2 with custom rom, also happens on my Pharos 137.

    • ltb

Well, i'm just lucky then i guess. I only have bluetooth on in my car, i get mail every 60 minutes, i call a lot, i browse, take photo's etc. etc. all the things i need to do for normal use, and my battery lasts for about 2 days. I can't find any pink spots in my pictures, and the screen responsiveness is great! (so no phantom inputs) I absolutely love this phone. Size? well, it's so thin you don't even notice it in your pocket. I'm using the phone now for 2 weeks and everytime i unlock it to the today screen i'm astonished again! this is definately by far the best, fastest phone i've ever had! (used to own an iPhone, touch diamond, touch diamond 2, touch HD).

Im using mine quite a lot, but the battery life is fine. It lasts at least the 18 hours i need. I have auto updates fopr twitter, email and weather, lots of demoing to friends, maybe 30 texts and some camera shots. One issue is that the case its supplied with seems to press on the power button so the screen keeps coming back on, this is bound to reduce life.

My photos are fine, no real pink spot.

I dont have any random screen activity either, im getting used to the sensitive screen in fact my HD feels weird now.

To me this device a) is too big, b) has no kb, and c) lacks buttons. But thats ok. HTC has a product in their lineup for folks like me. The TP2.. if only they would stop deleting buttons!!! I have and have loved my X1 but my friend recently got a TP2 and it is pretty nice. Perfect size, huge (for the size of the phone) flush mounted screen, ect. But I cant live without a Dpad!!! How am I supposed to skip tracks and adjust volume while driving? Dpads are so useful for so many things.

HTC please listen. Give me a TP2 with snapdragon, a real dpad (and no optical pad BS either), make sure the keyboard has a ctrl key, and give it a multitouch capacitive screen. Keep the 3.5mm jack pls. I promise I will buy it.

Hahhaa people people i have been using my HTC Touch Pro 2 windows mobile 6.5.1 phone for 2 months now and i can say tbis phone is excellent and never had any problems with it so far yet. i do allot of texting during the day i do about 40 texting different hours, browse the web on p0hone, listen music, watch live tv yes live tv on my TP2 for 30 min which HD2 can't do, and since i full charged my battery yesterday night around 4am and it been total of 7hrs already and i checked battery level results and it shows 90% only Wow i am so impressed with battery life on this phone. the phone i never even do a soft reset at all it always can last for up to 2 days with use and battery will show at 40% yes you hear me right 400% only for 2 days with use and without use. i also tested battery last week charging it full without using the phone 1 whole day. when 12:00am came i went to my phone and received 30 emails, 7 voicemail message, 9 miss calls. once i checked the battery level results WoW! oh my god it shows only 90% battery usage for whole day. this is remarkable phone and battery life. imagine just not using phone for whole day and battery life shows 90%. It shows it can last maybe another whole day or even another 2 days but have not tested doinv that yet has it really not easy not using the phone whole day. so to what your HD2 which is nice phone but i just want ccarry a large phone due to its screen size on my pocket. My HTC TP2 screen size is 400×800 which is big enough and best of it is using built in querty keyboard which i prefer use that HD2 virtual keyboard. it so convient using querty keyboad than virtual keyboard. so yes people if you want a phone with many excellent features for your personal and business use get a Touch Pro 2 windows mobile 6.5.1 phone has this is best windows phone on market still has nmost people. are still having to wait for it arrive for inventory has it is always sold out. who can blame them has this is excellent phone with no problems

I was/am thinking of trading my 32gb month and a half old iphone out with a hd2 if someone in my area (denmark) is interested…however, one of the main reasons for doing so – other than for getting a bigger screen with higher resolution, would be because i'm sick of not being able to use my iphone for just one day (from going to work in the morning at 7, till 7 in the evening when i'm home again). – I have to moderate my use heavily duing this time and then wait to get home to charge it again. of course I could just bring my charger or a cable which I've started doing – but it's not ideal…..Reading this thread makes me re-think trading it for an HD2 as it sounds like it's got just as poor battery life – correct?
