Hidden GPS now working on the HTC Shift

HTC has a habit of hiding the real capabilities of the hardware of their devices. The 850Mhz band on the HTC Touch and the HTC Touch Diamond are just two recent examples, as is the capacitive touch pad on the HTC Touch Diamond Pro. GPS has been another favourite of theirs, with the GPS being disabled on the HTC Mogul, CDMA HTC Touch and even earlier the HTC Trinity.

It now turns out that the HTC Shift, HTC’s one and only UMPC, has also been hiding hidden GPS capabilities. As usual however the happy hackers over at XDA-Developers have been hard at work liberating the full power of their devices. The solution is still a bit complicated, involving cab files and registry imports, but a full GPS-enabled ROM is being promised soon.

I was taking your article very seriously up until I got to the bit about the “HTC Mongul”. At that point, I almost spit up my drink in a fit of laughter.
There is no such thing as the HTC Mongul.
The “Mogul” (Mogul, as in a powerful business leader, like a media mogul, etc) is the Sprint version of the HTC Titan.

The Mogul is somehow often confused with Mongul (as in Mongolian Warriors?!), which has become quite the cause of ridicule on sites such as xda and PPCgeeks.com (http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=399871&postcount=2).

I think the most interesting bit here is that not only did you make the mistake of calling it the Mongul, you also seem to be under the impression that there was ANOTHER handset called the Titan, which had this issue before the Mongul.
If I am not Mistaken, the Titan (aka the Verizon XV6800, Telus P4000, etc) actually made its first appearance as the Sprint Mogul. It wasn’t until the other carrier variations came out that people began to refer to it by its internal name, the Titan.

Anyway, just thought you might like to set the record straight, since you ARE a blog focusing on WM devices.

Sorry, I know GSM WM devices better than CDMA ones. I shall correct that. Anyway, the device I am talking about is the HTC Trinity, which shipped without GPS enabled, but was later enabled due to a ROm upgrade leaked from Asia.
