How A Gyroscope Works

Since Apple announced the iPhone 4, interest towards a gyroscope on device has grown, so I thought I should post a video to show you how it works. In this video you see how and why the gyroscope is the best and most precise method of measuring movements.

I do not know how it is implemented on a device, but this video shows you how a real gyroscope works, and it is pretty cool seeing that nothing that gravity throws at it can stop it (except friction).

Ah, very nice post Wen! The video is very interesting, so I read up a bit after watching it and it seems gyroscopes in such devices are implemented with a vibrating object instead of a spinning wheel.

Yeah I'm way more interested in a gyro than a front facing camera. To me it is actually the most interesting aspect of iphone 4 and the only place I can see wp7 really lacking because it is going to open up a lot of cool apps I think. I read about the breakthrough in tiny gyros this company made about a while ago – you can see it in a phone here:

Personally I don't love shaking as a navigation technique but around 2:40 he start showing how quickly a gyro can respond to input when navigating a 3d app. Again devs are going to end up doing lots of really cool stuff with it.

So this will make my phone defy gravity?

I've got an old Air Mouse which has a 3D solid state gyroscope. It worked pretty well, but to be honest using GRemote on my HD2 to control my PC was much the same and that only has an accelerometer.
