HTC – Android does not have a compelling tablet story yet

HTC has told PocketLint they have not found a compelling reason to make an Android tablet yet.

“You’ve seen how, at Computex, there were 80 different Android tablets”, said Eric Lin, the company’s global PR and online community manager, “so if we just release an Android tablet, then we’re one of 81… Whereas, if we have a compelling feature, a really compelling use, anything like that, then it’ll help us to stand out. It’s going to take a lot of work searching for that”.

HTC is not about to give up on tablets altogether however.

“We are always looking at it, but, right now, the whole idea is that in order to be successful with a tablet, you need to have something compelling. And not just a compelling form factor”. “You need to find that compelling use, that compelling story, that one compelling feature. And we are not going to do anything until we have found that”, Lin said.

I don't buy it.

First off, what is so compelling about the iPad that has seen it sell 3 million units in just a few months? Other than the App Store, there is nothing to the iPad – it really is just an enlarged iPod touch.

Second, why is it okay to be one of dozens of companies making Android phones, but you can't be one of dozens of companies selling Android tablets? Just doesn't add up in my mind… perhaps there isn't much to tweak about the form factor of a tablet, but there is still a lot you can do with the size and weight and features to set it apart, just like all these slab-style smartphones.

But then one also has to think about Chrome OS… is that just for netbooks? Can't that go on a tablet?
