HTC Peep for Windows Mobile still not working– here are the alternatives

HTC claimed, ironically via Twitter, that their HTC Peep client should now be working, after apparently coming to an agreement with Twitter not to shut down their un-updated client.

This fixed everything pretty much for HTC Peep Android users, but apparently leaves HTC’s Windows Mobile users with a pretty broken client, able to send tweets but unable receive them.

Given that both HTC and Microsoft have pretty much given up on Windows Mobile, we have to look at 3rd party software, and 2 clients, already updated to support OAuth, come to mind.

Pocketwit is a free client with a pretty long list of features:

moTweets works. You may need to download a new version. It gained OAuth support in June.

moTweets works fine, and there is an ad-supported free version if you don't want to pay $3.99. But honestly, if you have an HD2 or another device with a fast CPU, moTweets is the best Twitter app out there. It's one of the few to even support Windows Mobile Standard (non-touch) and Professional (touch).

In the UK, we could by law demand a refund on our phones if this isn't fixed soon. What's more, their website STILL lists HTC Peep as a feature on the HD2, so they're misleading new customers as well – again, illegal. It doesn't matter that other free Twitter apps are available. I'll be writing to the Trading Standards Agency if it isn't fixed this time next week.

Actually, the problem is with Twitter, and it is a free service. I doubt you would get far with Trading Standards.

It's not Twitters problem, it's HTCs. If it were a problem at Twitters end, no Twitter clients would work, which they do. It's HTCs problem to sort.

Only one function of Peep isn't working, the oAuth issue affects login only. Peep can still log in, it's still affected by having it's connection revoked. Only downloading of tweets from followed users is affected, you can still post tweets, search, follow and un-follow etc.

It doesn't matter who's at fault or what works and what doesn't. What matters is that when I was sold my HD2 it said HTC Peep was a feature, and their website still says HTC Peep is a feature. If it doesn't work then they're breaking the law.

Pocketwit is not working for me.. I get "Communication Error" when it attempts to load the tweets..

Peep supports xAuth, Twitter however is broken. Peep is working fully for some people and not for others, if it's not working for you it is unlikely the other clients will work either.

I am a HD2 Winmo user – this is the message I received from HTC yesterday

Hi, Chris We are currently investigating an issue with our Peep client that has stopped working and hope to have a solution soon. Please monitor the support pages for updates, or if you prefer we can record your details and contact you again once a solution is available, You can use the official twitter app for the time being. This is unaffected, HTC are currently working on the authorisation required for peep to work on our handsets, an update should be available soon. When Peep broke I looked through Omarket for freeware Twitter apps for Windows Mobile and personally I found Azurea – http://azurea.refy.net/en/ – to be the best – worth a look if you're after a Peep replacement.

WM Peep (Touch Pro2) is working for me as of 9/12/10

Stork also has Oauth support and thus works. Costs $1 on the US market.
