HTC release Windows Mobile 6.5.3 HTC HD2 in China

The HTC TIANXI runs Windows Mobile 6.5.3 As has been rumoured previously, HTC has announced the release of new smartphones carrying its own brand, rather than its subsidiary Dopod, in China recently.

Amongst the 4 handsets the company has released under China Mobile is one Windows Mobile device, the Windows Mobile 6.5.3 running HTC Tianxi, which bears a striking resemblance to the HTC HD2, but has the Chinese version of 3G, TD-SCDMA.

Besides its partnership with China Mobile HTC has also announced a new distribution partnership with China’s largest electronics distributor, GOME Electrical Appliances Holding Ltd.

"We are proud to introduce the HTC brand in China and look forward to bringing a fresh customer-centric smartphone experience to consumers in China," said Cher Wang, chairman of HTC. "Together with our strategic partner Dopod, we have introduced many state-of-the-art phones over the past few years in China. HTC’s passion for innovation and its commitment to delighting people around the world are what drive us to improve the overall mobile experience in big and small ways. It is this customer-centric approach that has driven HTC’s global leadership position and has differentiated us."

"The pace of mobile innovation globally is moving at an extraordinary rate, and we are excited to be bringing many of our most innovative phones to China, the largest and most sophisticated mobile market in the world," said Peter Chou, chief executive officer of HTC. "HTC was founded with a vision for mobile convergence and a passion for innovation that has established us as a globally recognized mobile leader."

HTC has been partnering mobile operators in China since 2003 and has committed itself to developing TD-SCDMA-based phones there.

The HTC Tianxi, according to the render released, runs Windows Mobile 6.5.3, and operating system upgrade from Microsoft which makes the OS easier to use on capacitive screens, and which HTC has not released so far for its very popular 4.3 inch Windows Mobile smartphone. The HTC HD2 will not be getting an upgrade to Windows Phone 7 either, but this issue is less relevant in China, as the OS does not support Chinese scripts at present.

    finally..but why not 6.5.5?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/l3v5y l3v5y

6.5.3 = 6.5.5. They're essentially the same, and the later builds are pretty much identical. It's just a marketing name.

      • darkcg

I wouldn't say it's a marketing name. In fact, "6.5.5" has never been an official release from Microsoft. Just a newer build from the 6.5.3 RTM version. But you're right, it's still 6.5.3, only a newer build.

Boo, for a second I got excited thinking the actual HD2 was getting 6.5.5…

I guess this still allows the cooks from XDA to get Sense fully working with 6.5.5 finally, but that would take some time I suppose.

  • Rick

@Jos: Sense IS fully working with 6.5.5 on the HD2. Have you tried Duttys ROMs?

…at least on my HD2 it is

Go into the phone app, what does the SIP button look like? The keyboard button, it looks messed up.

      • vlaaikaner

        No it does not?

  • Tydi

Jos Dewey, you certainly have an old Rom. This is fixed since a long time =)

HTC should really upgrade europeans HD2 to the newer Windows Mobile builds. Ok, we can't upgrade to Windows Phone 7 for hardware constraints, but why not Windows Mobile 6.5.3? HTC is very poor in support sometimes. I have bought this phone in November 2009 for 629€ (that is, 822$) and no major upgrade from the release…
