HTC Rhodium retrospectively dated

The HTC Rhodium is one of the most expected devices by high end Windows Mobile users. The device, expected to finally be the long-awaited successor to the HTC Universal, with a large keyboard and WVGA screen, was first revealed to us in the beginning of January with the huge HTC 2009 line-up leak. The device’s credentials were further confirmed when a leak of Verizon’s 2009 line-up mentioned a HTC device which resembled the HTC Touch HD.

So while we know HTC’s full line-up for 2009, we do not know when the devices will be delivered. That makes this December 2008 PPCGeeks thread, a whole months before the huge HTC leak, particularly interesting:

Sprint getting HTC Rhodium

Got this news from a family member who is a sprint employee who heads new device delivery and whatnot. Not really sure what the phone is, just asked about new HTC phones and she said that was coming in 3rd Q of 09.

The implication of this post, lent credibility by knowing the name of the device 30 days before everyone else, indicated that the Rhodium should be coming between June and August 2009, and will in fact also come to Sprint. At that time I expect most new devices also to have Windows Mobile 6.5

I guess CDMA users have quite a bit to look forward to, and as we know the Rhodium will also have a GSM version, which usually comes before CDMA devices, I expect the rest of the world wont have to wait too long for this amazing device.

Im wont be excited until i see video performance, other wise, my touch pro stays!

  • Wishmaster

I hope that it will offer tv-out function despite whatever chip it will have inside. If it will offer 720p it must have HDMI so that we could take advantage of that HD video playback or at least 4″ screen (although 720p video would still be overkill for such small screen).
Please let it be based on one of the three SoC’s – tegra, omap3 or snapdragon.

  • NuShrike

Please let it be one of the proven SoCs with graphics that work. Excludes Scorpion, for now.

    • Wishmaster

Not defending or anything but clarifying.
Scorpion is not graphic chip it is custom ARMv7 based CPU. You can call it custom cortex A8.

Is it a black slab , can the screen tilt and swivel etc

    • admin

Probably not. I don’t think HTC will ever match the innovative hinges on the HTC Universal or Tilt. Maybe too many of them broke and needed servicing.

well then its not a successor to the HTC Universal

Im getting sick and tired of these boring slabs from HTC . Ill be looking elswhere (samsung or toshiba) when my kaiser eventualy dies

I buy mine htc universal when first release and i still with universal today.
I tryed a Raphael and Blackstone. both are peace of shit. BEsides the GPS ( i never use) and fact they have a LOT OF MEMORY my Universal still the best from now. Maybe with this one i can change. Almost allprogram that this BIG ones use i can use inside mine universal ( with respect the memory trouble , mine have 120Mb not 64).

You are speaking to an ex-universal owner, and I agree the device is unmatched. However the lack of HSDPA killed the device for me. I however look forward to having a new device with a large screen and extremely usable keyboard. These on-screen keyboards are just killing me.

I hate the on-screen keybos too. I got a diamond thinking that with such a sensitive touchscreen I’d be fine but I’m really hurting now. I used to type up word documents and emails on my Kaiser, but now I don’t even bother. Maybe getting an Xperia or Touch Pro would remedy this… I have 3 options either one of those phones or wait. What should I do?

    • admin

If typing is your priority the Touch Pro has an excellent keyboard that is a joy to use. The Xperia has a terrible keyboard. You know what I think of soft keyboards ;)
The Rhodium should be very good too, and carry and updated OS, so its probably worth waiting 6 months before tying yourself in a two year contract.

      • mweb586

I always buy mine unlocked off of eBay, after selling my old phone of course!

You’re “in the business” when do you think the first Tegra phone will be available, 4 months? 6 months?

        • wreiad

Probably when version 7 is announced.
