HTC Touch Pro vs HTC Touch Pro 2 comparison

tpvstp2

One of our commenters said the real size comparison they wanted to see was the HTC Touch Pro vs the HTC Touch Pro 2, which seems a fair question, the one being the successor to the other.

Unfortunately I have neither device here, but quickly mocked up this graphic showing the relative sizes.

The HTC Touch Pro is 51 x 102 x 18.05 millimetres, while the Touch Pro 2 is 59.2 x 116 x 17.25 millimetres. That makes the Touch Pro 2 a much larger device, 8.2mm (1/3 inch) wider and 14 mm (0.55 inches) taller.  In fact, the device is even slightly taller than the HTC Kaiser (59 x 112 x 19mm).  Of course of the 3 devices the Touch Pro 2 is the thinner, at 17.25 mm, but one does have to wonder about the range of appeal of such large device, even for business users.

Of course the big 62.1 x 115.5 x 12.3 iPhone 3G does prove that if you make a device interesting enough the public is willing to overlook trivial things such as the size of the device.

Of note also is the curved design, with sloping sides, which does a lot to improve the hand-feel of the device and gives the impression that its a lot smaller than it really is.

Is the Touch Pro 2 too large?  Let us know in the comments.

I wouldn’t mind the size if they had cut back on the thickness…but a device that large with only 1mm less thickness than the original Touch Pro=Big Brick.

  • netboy

people dont complain about iphone size, cus it’ thin. that look sexy!
touch pro2 big and thick, that is truely a BRICK!

  • aleis

my omnia is lighter, thinner and smaller than the iphone!
plus its looks way more sophisticated!

  • bryant

oh please this phone is beautiul in every way, this phone will sell more than any phone
that comes out, when it does

  • bryant

oh and another thing, does any one know if sprint will be picking up this device?

    • admin

As far as we know they will.

  • relic419

This is definitely a large phone, just not pocketable enough. Plus, if my touch pro feels heavy, and this one is supposed to be even heavier, I can’t even imagine. With those dimensions, I might as well carry a netbook! I’ll definitely be skipping this behemoth.

The size and thickness would be fine if it had a fricking d-pad. How can a device that HUGE not have the most basic element of the WM “power user” UI: the d-pad?

    • Chris

      Amen brother/sister!

    • Chris

Different Chris, but I also agree! Bring back the freakin DPADs!!!
Stupid MS requires a phsyical start button for newer devices, but they don’t realise that they should be requiring a DPAD until their OS no longer freatures ANY drop down menus or small checkboxes.

      • Chris

        Other Chris. :)

Yeah! The OS is still pretty much the same as it was in 2003. Freakin bring back the dang DPAD! That’s HTC’s fault though. Not WinMo.

I hate the fact that fashion has taken over function with the designs as of late. Yes, the iPhone doesn’t need buttons. And that’s something I actually dislike about it. But WinMo in its current form does. Quit trying to be something you’re not!

The lack of hardly any buttons on the Diamond 2 will definitely keep me away from it. Actually I’m having a hard time deciding what device if any will be my next one because of the lack of any tactile input on these WinMo devices. WinMo 7 is a LONG way away. Why are they designing these devices today as if they were going to run it. And we very well know they won’t even include an upgrade to it anyway. So WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Chris

          @Other Chris

My sentiments exactly. I honestly can say that I’m not really enthused by any of these DPADless HTC phones, for me if I do upgrade anytime soon, it’ll either be a Sony X1 or…I don’t know, Samsung sucks too with its move to touchpads…so maybe Acer

It’s the best form factor yet with a full qwerty keyboard. I don’t see this as the Touch Pro 2 but more like the TyTN III… It would be nice if it could slim down to 15mm thickness, but at 17mm it’s as slim as the old HTC Magician which is slim enough considering *it has a keyboard* :) The extra 5mm thickness over an iPhone is *definitely* worth it!

  • dave s

bring it around 14mm and I’m sold (next time htc, next time :p)

I dislike WVGA … alots of program are not ready for that

Cosigning ParrotLover.. I can’t understand why it doesn’t have a D-pad. They don’t lack the space: get rid of that useless zoom slider, put a d-pad there, and arrange the buttons around it if you need to.

I’m coming from a Blue Angel and HTC hasn’t put out one phone since then I can consider perfect: they always kill one feature. Tytn? Tiny screens, same as Raphael. Touch HD?No keyboard, no d-pad. This is wack man, even the Palm Pre’s setup is better.

I bet they felt they needed the zoom slider there because iPhone people are always pinching their web pages, and every multi-touch UI always shows off zooming (since that’s the only place it’s been useful so far).

The screen size is fine, make it thinner and add a D-pad, put it in my hands this year.

    • NuShrike

You know, they had a perfectly working physical zoom slider … it is called the “scroll-wheel” and dominantly used in mice also! The scroll-wheel also took no space and was a clickable button too, doh!

They could’ve added tilting on the scrolling-wheel (forward-back) to add other functionality as Logitech/MS had (patent idea!), or as a zoom input.

FTL with HTC’s touch ergonomics stupidity.

  • John K

Obviously it would be great if the device was thinner as so many people have pointed out but personally I can’t believe they stuffed everything they did in it even with as thick as it is. I mean I’m sure they could make it thinner… just cut the battery down to an annoyingly small size that won’t last the day and take out the great speakerphone and maybe the tilt function and I bet there would be a lot more people that liked it’s size, but obviously this device isn’t targeted at those people. I’m sure in a few years a device with similar specs would be quite a bit smaller but for now as a person who loves the features they packed in this phone I can deal with it’s size. I can’t wait to get one.

  • rileyfreeman

thanks for doing this. i see im just glad its not thicker. while it will be a brick and huge the tilting screen and bigger screen just cant be beat.

my situation is my cdma carrier is in the process of starting an hspa network. that should be ready to lauch around oct/nov. not sure if there is going to be a cdma version of this or if it will only come in gsm and if its only gsm will my carrier pick it up.

so its possible i never see this device until its newer version is out

  • dr g

Comparing it to iPhone or Omnia thickness is stupid. It has a KEYBOARD folks, it CANNOT be as thin as a device that does not!

Nor would you want it to be … imagine how thin the keyboard would be (= fragile/creaky).

    • Erick

      Good point lol.

This is a piece of legacy rubbish (still old processor from the first generation) with no concrete benefits other than incremental ones.

It is also a stop gap set of phones as they will all be superceeded by new devices (already announced by HTC) when Windows mobile 7 comes out next year. In fact I doubt these would have seen the light of day if it were not for windows mobile 6.5 or the need to keep up buyer interest.

I just picked up a HTC touch pro 2 and in 10 minutes it locked up and needed a reset (this was after no customisations). HTC used to produce good handsets.

    • admin

I dont think its any suprise that a pre-production device running pre-release software would lock up.

  • Chris

Is it big? I’d say yes. Am I inclined to upgrade to this over my current Touch Diamond? No. My Diamond screen may be smaller but it’s gorgeous and the overall size is WAY smaller. The ONLY thing that appeals to me with the TP2 is the supposed loud external speaker. I don’t wan’t slide out keyboards anymore. They just add thickness, and keys end up not responding/breaking after time. Also where is the rubberization. Wouldn’t a business user appreciate that? And what about a 3.5 jack like the Touch HD? These recent phones from HTC just make me angry.

I’m interested in how the Acer line is going to pan out. Hopefully good.

  • Diego

I like this phone a lot. It looks amazing and very well built. I hope they release it soon :)

On question off topic, since MS is requiring a physical star button in new devices with WinMo 6.5, could HTC Touch HD be updated to WinMo 6.5 and maybe next year to WinMo 7??

Can anyone answer me this, please? In case HD couldn’t, I’m starting to save money right now for my HTC Touch Pro 2 :(

Or maybe one of the new Acer phones, F900 or M900. They look great.

    Thanks.

    • admin

The consensus opinion is that only devices released after MWC by HTC will get the WM 6.5 upgrade, but I am sure xda-dev will take care of any Touch HD owners.

  • Diego

I meant physical windows start button hehehe

  • Diego

    Thanks for your answer!!! :)

  • SneakerFiend

I wouldn’t care if it was bigger. I’d still get it all i care about is a phone that is going to plow through like a multi-tasking truck.
I’m getting this phone regardless of how huge it is. I need a new phone which is number one on my list, i dont like android which is my second reason, and third is that i’m already used to and a WinMo fanboy meaning this thing could be literally a brick as long as this thing has all the functionality and speed i need I’m good.

OH! and it needs to have T-mobile capable 3G

Everyone has different needs, but for the business user on the go this is the only phone I would even consider. Just waiting for it to come out now. When we’re on the mobile web screen size is good. Great landscape keyboard slider. East thumb typing (sorry Palm Pre, your portrait keyboard killed the deal for me). Yet all still small enough to easily fit in coat or jeans pocket. When I saw the increased screen size and the killer keyboard I was jumping up and down. As far as I’m concerned HTC just hit it out of the park with the Touch Pro II.

  • Chris

HTC makes nice ppc/smartphones. Somethings are on the quirky side though. Aesthetics can be better and size can be reduced in certain parts. Battery life is on par with others and stability is good. HTC. Stick with an all black phone. Make it sleeker. Trim the thickness. Make use of the two pieces. Reduce battery cover size. I had the Mogul and that thing is huge, but not compared to others. They definitely need to refine their phones.

As for the Touch Pro 2, it is nice. I don’t like the color scheme with the lighter gold/silver color on the back. A nice polycarbonate cover would be nice.

Traditionally on regular sliding phones, top sliding piece is thinner. It should be much thinner on the ppc’s. The back piece is way too thick. It must have a lot of wasted space inside.

The touch pro 2 is thinner. A nice touch. It can be thinner. Right now I am considering the iPhone 3G(s) to add to my collection. I will wait for the price of the Touch Pro 2 to level off to about 50%. It is not worth the extra cost compared to Touch Pro 1.

  • StanleyD

The size of the device isn’t going to stop me from getting one. WHAT WILL, is whether the device is standard across all of the carriers. HTC Touch Pro’s greatest error was the ’31 flavors of HTC touch pro(sprint/alltel version, at & t version, verizon version et al)’ which made accessorizing a nightmare. Also, if it has micro sdxc capacity vs. sdhc capacity . . . GOODBYE I Phone!! It will be the new benchmark in pda’s.

  • James

Why are people complaining about the size of this thing? The whole point was that many people feel the Touch Pro is TOO small!! The Pro 2 has a 3.8 inch screen and keyboard which is unmatched by anything else out there.. plus it has many other gadgets like dual mic and speakers..
I’m upgrading since the Pro 2 has bigger keys for my fat fingers and I want the flip up screen and screen size for video, gps and other shite!
Tell me… is there anything better than this? the Iphone does not have most of the gadgets this thing has…

    • Kimberly

James, I am curious….my HTC TP has VERY limited signal quality…we live in the country and my Palm Centro that I converted the land line to last Fall has WAY better reception. Do you know if the HTC TP2 has the same reception problem?? I cannot use my HTC TP in my home, but the Palm Centro works perfectly. I just wonder what the problem might be??

  • Makkand

I cannot see why I want to upgrade from my Touch Pro to the Touch Pro 2

  • blair

i know verizon carries the touch pro but do they carry the touch pro 2?

  • Collin

I wounldn't upgrade, I mean this thing loses a radio, flash for camera, magnetic stylus (Awesome because on the Touch Pro II, if it gets overused and starts to die down, it could start to fall out then.)

But I like the new flip and huge sceen, but that won't change my mind.

  • Jackie

Collin what do you mean "it could start to fall out then" what's going to fall out the stylus i don't think so……but anyway…..

This is an AWESOME phone the touch pro for verzion never had a radio….the touch pro 2 WILL have a flash and magnetic stylus….where are you getting your information?

    • Eddie

Jackie, TP2 does NOT have flash nor magnetic stylus… Look it up.

Current TP owners have very little incentive to upgrade to TP2. However, those who don't already own a TP have many reasons to choose the TP2, as it is indeed a nice device. But, the "core" of both devices remains very similar (same proc speed, with TP2 using an older version of the CPU iroinically… Same amount of ROM and RAM, with TP2 having less avaialble RAM… Battery life is similar, even though the TP has a smaller 1340mah vs 1500mah battery)

Keep in mind that, the differences may not justify the cost to upgrade for those who already own a TP, and that's likely where Collin is coming from. The TP was a great device in its own right… 640×480 screen res (800×480 on TP2) is still an amazing resolution, especially when you consider the screen size at 2.8 inches…
