HTC’s CEO disses iPhone, calls Microsoft their “strongest partner”

We have probably put up the above video earlier, but I wanted to highlight some statements made by Peter Chou at the HTC HD2 launch event in Taiwan again.

Peter Chou started started by calling Microsoft their strongest partner, and said HTC remained committed to working together to make Windows Phone a success.  The also mentioned, contrary to previous reports, that both HTC and Microsoft worked together the capacitive screen support in the device.

While it may often feel HTC is working on its own almost in opposition to HTC, the reality is that a lot of the work of the Windows Mobile division at Microsoft is supporting OEMs in their ambitions, and a lot would not be possible without Microsoft’s support.

man i hate when blogs use the titles of their articles to try and get more views, he never dissed the iphone. he just showed the advantage of having a larger screen (to read more of an email) and used the iphone as a comparison. hardly a cee-oh-no-u-didn't

I really hope that MS pushes hard to keep styluses in their devices in the future. Unlike the authors at this blog, I don't care what the underlying technology is, I just want it to work. Capacitive versus resistive is like blue versus red. Who cares?! But, I was very disappointed to learn HTC's capacitive device has no stylus, despite hearing a while back that HTC was working on a stylus technology specifically for capacitive screens.

No stylus is a non-starter for me. I need the stylus. I need precision. I don't want, for example, Pocket Excel to have ginormous buttons and controls that take up the entire screen. I want small controls that I can precisely click with a stylus (that I can't do with my thumb).

I want a d-pad too, but I fear that is gone in WM. Which is really stupid because Android is embracing hardware buttons, including trackball-style/d-pad all over the place (even at HTC).

I'm not a fan of D-pads or styluses, so for me the removal of those things are welcomed.

"I need precision. I don't want, for example, Pocket Excel to have ginormous buttons and controls that take up the entire screen. I want small controls that I can precisely click with a stylus (that I can't do with my thumb)."

Pocket Excel doesn't have big buttons, the ability to zoom in and out should give you the precision you're looking for.

however, to every man his own. I dont' like styluses or D-pads, but you do……

Have a think about what you just said …."zoom in and out" it's extra work to do the same thing….just like everything is with a finger only interface where you can only display a fraction of the data on screen at one time because dense [read small] data can't be used with a large fingertip without skidding, zooming, panning all over the place.
Finger friendly basically render's a high resolution screen pointless [excuse the pun] because it nerf's the advantages of having legible denser data and increased workspace, remote desktop is a perfect example of how much better the high resolution experience is with a fine point stylus, but it's completely unusable with a finger in it's present form without someone making a monkey act version like the apple one's where you have to zoom in and out all day so that you can click on thing's.

there are styluses that works on capacitive screen too, so you can just buy one or a couple if you find scrolling/panning/zooming to be extra work. on my athena, I had no problems using my fingers when using remote desktop. however, if you're using a 2.8inch screen I can see where the need would come in to use a stylus.

I use opera mobile all the time and having the ability to pan/zoom/scroll is really nice, and I hope one day features like that will be enabled all over the OS. that's just what I want, someone else might want something different.

      Definitely.Could not agree more.

I hope this video will make those who think HTC should drop windows mobile and go fullbore with Andriod OS shut up.

"MSFT is HTC's strongest partner, and without MSFT there wouldn't be a HTC today"
I like how HTC's CEO gives credit where it is due, unlike some other people.

Yeah, HTC sure is commItted. However, I will be ditching my 5 month old HTC Touch HD as it is official now that HTC will not be offering an upgrade to WM 6.5. Which makes me wonder if HTC will do the same to the HD2 when WM 7 is out. Your guess is as good as mine…
