Internet sharing and tethering confirmed in Windows Phone 7

Windows phone 7 will support tetheringBrandon Watson, Microsoft’s Director of Developer Experience for Windows Phone 7 has confirmed on the Windows Weekly Podcast that Windows phone 7 will in fact ship with tethering enabled.

The feature will however depend on carriers, with Brandon noting that they had to keep their carrier partners happy.

The confirmation will be good news to business users, many who depend on the functionality on a day to day basis.

This is one hell of a roller coaster ride. One day let down. Next day happy as hell.

If I didn't love it so much I'd hate it.

    • JMobile

      No kidding!

  • CarlosMobile

WOW, now that's great news! I hope the feature is not locked down by carriers, after all, Android has it wide open and all you need to do is download an app and get moving.

and we all know how at&t treats tethering. They want an extra $40 a month to use the same bandwidth on a larger screen.

  • plost99

Did anyone listen to the entire podcast? At some point they talk about carrier support and how Verizon will not be there but Brandon doesn't want to confirm and at least to me he seems surprised at the reports.
    Not sure what to believe.

Disappointed by the "carrier option" thing. AT&T is not known for reasonable pricing for the rare (for me) need to tether. It's not like I go over my monthly "unlimited" allotment, even when tethering now. I shouldn't have to pay more for the ability to tether with the frequency that I use it. Hopeful that AT&T will leave it open, but not optimistic. :(

Thing is, if operators didn't have the option of disabling it, they probably wouldn't support the devices at all.

      • paschott

Maybe, but they support WM devices and as far as I know, all carriers except Verizon allow tethering right now (within reason) and can't disable it. IIRC, Verizon has a history of limiting their hardware to block all sorts of good features. Maybe that changed w/ WM5/6, but I'd be surprised. I know that I can tether on AT&T, but will likely get dinged if I go over my "unlimited" monthly allotment.

Old news. This was announced like two weeks ago. They also said that carriers can't charge for it.

    • paschott

I missed that part saying they can't charge for it. I saw the larger news that said tethering is up to the carrier. If they can't charge extra for it, I'm a little more optimistic.

Eh. I just found the article I saw before about it, turns out the tweet wasn't true. Shame.

    I can't see the information I want.

I want to wireless tether to other computers. Like a Wi-Fi hotspot.

In some places, carriers give you good data deals, so you can use your phone as your only internet connection, and when you get home, you switch on your phone and light up your house with wireless internet. For example, 2 people can surf their laptops simultaneously from your phone.

Everyone's talking about tethering, but nobody is defining if it is wireless tethering, or do you have to use a USB cable?

I do not think tethering is that crucial, really. I mean C' mon I would be happy if they keep it open like the Iphone or Android, but I know how ATT likes to overcharge for using their bandwith, so I really doubt it we could avert the extra monthly charge for the option.
In any case, it's always good to know MS is listening!!!

    • Vinnie

You don't think tethering is that crucial to you. For myself and other users its very important as I use it everyday at work. I'm happy about this news and I just hope AT&T will enable it.

  • Lennard

carriers have the option to disable the tethering/internet sharing app in windows mobile, but ever widnows phone I've ever baught on ATT and tmobile US has always had that same internet sharing app so I'm doubting that they will start disabling it now with the new OS….here's to hoping they don't start now

  • DisappointedWindowsUser

Well I have a Samsung Focus on ATT and they have taken it out. I am very upset about it. I have to take my sim out and back into my fuze just to tether.
