Internet Sharing confirmed in Mango, wont be coming to older HTC handsets initially

Pocket-Lint has good news and bad news for Windows phone 7 users.

The good news is that Internet Sharing over WIFI is confirmed in Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, and will be coming with HTC’s newly announced Windows Phone handsets.

The bad news is that the feature will not be included in the initial roll-out of updates to existing devices.

“It was added by Microsoft too late for us to include it,” a spokesman for the company told Pocket-Lint before adding that “we’ve updated our current Windows Phone 7 devices twice already so you shouldn’t have to wait long.

Interestingly the HTC rep also let slip the puported launch date of the update – the last week of September, making September Mango month after all.

good to see this coming…is it so hard though to give old users a “small” update with the functionality? what is CUSTOMER SERVICE good for? how about a little customer delight? really all these companies try to rip you a new one and burn a hole in your wallet but none of them cares about those that have already paid.

No offense, but a lot of folks keep complaining that these companies (like HTC and Microsoft) are making customers wait or that they keep teasing us. Eh! These companies are simply trying to make sure things work before releasing. They have the quality gates in place after the last wave of updates.

I’m thankful that Internet Sharing is coming in the first place (nice they could squeeze this in). The last thing I want to see though is another fouled up update, so I’m glad these companies are not rushing, and working to bring us what they can. At least they’re letting some people have the features when they can (why make everyone wait?) Also nice that they’re keeping everyone informed.

Does that mean that there will be no tethering in old devices at all? And only the preloaded HTC (possibly other OEMs too) but not the older hardware (meaning that we have to wait for Tango maybe?)

It sounds like it was a decision made by HTC, that only affects HTC’s devices.
The other OEMs can include it still, but that might delay the update a little.

Well i just hope that it come faster :) Mango and tethering :D

OEM’s can have updates outside of Microsoft updates.  So there shouldn’t be any reason we’d have to wait for the Tango update.

And the carriers remain silent …

So….here we are, the first major update and we have fragmentation already. I keep getting so close to fully embracing WP, I now use it every day, but that one thing I really miss is tethering…….and now this.

Microsoft can do many good things, but they have the uncanny ability to always come up with that one negative thing  that overshadows all the rest.

Hmm… Fragmentation…. I heard that before from some other rival mobile OS….. haha…..

    • http://www.twitter.com/wixostrix WixosTrix

Geewiz, it’s hardly fragmentation.  At least they tell us why it isn’t coming initially and confirmed that it will come.  Unlike another platform where you’re just hoping they’ll announce an update for your phone.

Sorry WixosTrix, but this is fragmentation. Not all devices will be running the same feature set. That IS what fragmentation is, even if there is some promise of future delivery.

From the onset Microsoft said it was putting things in place so this would not happen, and yet, here we are only on the first major update and we see it already.

One of the main reasons that WP has not been selling well is because of lack of mindshare. It is things like this that cause the lack of mindshare. When things like this happen people loose confidence in Microsoft’s ability to handle a world class mobile operating syatem

Another thing…..HTC is saying they didn’t get the tethering update soon enough to include it in the update that hasn’t even been released yet, and won’t be until later in the month at least, yet they could include it in the new phones announce yesterday??

Okay you’re right, but I think you guys are really trying to split hairs to call it fragmentation. It’s really not that serious. Android’s fragmentation is on because there are multiple versions running out in the wild. This fragmentation is a few features not being available YET. Some features very from phone to phone anyway like HTC’s Attentive thing. Someone is going to talk about it on their phone and someone else is going to look and see they don’t have it because they don’t have an HTC device. HTC probably just needs to test and implenet for the previous devices. OEM’s can have device specific updates outside of the Windows Phone updates. This is likely whats going to happen.

As much as I really want this feature, I dont want to have to pay twice for the same tiny amount of data only to be able to use it on a larger screen of my choosing.

  • xpxp2002

It’s not fragmentation, as the update is coming. Updates with Windows Phone have always been staggered between OEMs and carriers, so this doesn’t really change anything.

Would be nice to have tethering on the Mozart before September next year. Christmas would be nice, just in time for holiday season when it’s really useful.
