iSuppli predicts eventual Windows Phone victory over iPhone

Smartphone Ranking

iSuppli has joined a bevy of analysts predicting that Windows Phone will eventually overtake the iPhone in total shipments, largely on the weight of Nokia’s commitment to the OS.

The company is predicting Windows Phone will take 9% of the smartphone market in 2012, which predicts sales of around 50 million handsets.  This market share is expected to rise to 16.7% in 3 years time, overtaking the iPhone, with 16.6% of the market.

The one product which has given iSuppi confidence that Nokia and Windows Phone can execute was the Nokia Lumia 900, which won several best of CES 2012 awards this year.

“One of the hottest new products unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show was the Lumia 900, a Windows Phone-based smartphone sporting a flashy set of features that makes it competitive with the best alternatives offered by the Android camp,” said Wayne Lam, senior analyst for wireless communications at IHS. “This hot product represents Nokia’s first step to reclaim its market share. Combined with Nokia’s efforts to drive the development of the Windows Phone ecosystem, the Lumia 900 and its successors will help Microsoft to reclaim its No. 2 ranking in smartphone operating system market share in 2015.”

They note Nokia’s departure from developing for Europe first and then trying to release the handset in US, as well as improved relationships with Rogers, Telus, AT&T and T-Mobile are concrete examples of Nokia executing on this strategy.

“The introduction of the Lumia 900 shows that Nokia believes the road back to smartphone dominance runs through North America,” said Francis Sideco, senior principal analyst for consumer and communications at IHS. “And the way to win North America is through its operator channels.”

LTE, which will also only roll out in several years time in Europe, is another example of Nokia serving the US market directly.

“In the past, Nokia always introduced new technologies in its home European market first,” Sideco said. “However, for the Lumia 900—Nokia’s first LTE phone—the company initially is rolling it out in North America. This demonstrates Nokia’s commitment to re-enter the region.”

iSuppli expects Nokia to dominate the Windows Phone world, selling 50% of Windows Phones in 2012 and 62 percent in 2013 at which point their share will begin to decline in 2014, as other companies increase their sales of Windows Phone products.

Nokia will drive the development and expansion of the Windows Phone market, opening up opportunities for other players, Lam said. “Because of Nokia’s support, apps developers will eagerly shore up the Windows platform. This will cause other makers of Windows Phone devices, such as Samsung and HTC, to offer more products supporting the OS—further expanding the market.”

and iPhones are just going to stay stagnant with their marketshare for a year releasing CDMA phones in the US?!!  come on now.  Im glad that they have such an optimistic outlook for WP but please be realistic

    • Anonymous

Its not all about the US market.  The Chinese market is already bigger than the US smartphone market for example.

      • http://twitter.com/TheFightSayeth the pugnacious fight

You’re right, it isn’t all about the US market but, the US market does matter and having a device on 3 out of the 4 major US carriers makes a giant difference.

Predictions are never realistic. They study the past to tell us the future but you’re simply gambling here as there’s no certainty at all of what the future brings.

iPhones are only going to get stronger I think Android will loose alot of marketshare and WP will cover that

    • Anonymous

Yes and no.  Some places iPhones are getting stronger, but Europe for example, iPhones (you could say) are not doing as well as in other places like America for example.

  • rsgx

Nope, disagree with these numbers. At its current rate Android will hit 60% by the end of 2012 IMO.

    • Anonymous

Your “current rate” as stated, does not take into account the Nokia worldwide partnership, the Microsoft tenacity as witnessed with XBox, nor the glut created by it’s own ecosystem which places each Android customer at odds with it’s own ecosystem/upgrade/fragmentation.  Android phones are destined to the Walmart effect by minimizing itself from a valued purchase to that of Keds vs. KMart.

They’re not going to stand-still with their product.

We’ll have to see. Right now, as far as their sales go, their not slowing and activating at 750k a day. Regardless of the exact meaning of activations, that is a LOT.

The sad thing that I noticed is that BlackBerry has fallen on such hard times, they are just lumped into the “Other” category.  So sad to see how the mighty have fallen.

    • http://profiles.google.com/philipcdj Philip De Jesus

I’m also sorry to see Blackberry fall to the “others” category. I guess they went the Windows Mobile way. Lack of innovation and deaf ear for consumers. Blackberry is a great mobile brand but you can’t stay up forever. The wheel needs to keep turning somehow.

No bones about it, Apple changed the landscape.  It is sad to see Blackberry in this predicament.   I personally haven’t ruled them out, yet, but unless they change with times, they’ll have forged their own path.

9% this year for WP? wishful thinking, but I’d like to be proven wrong.
The Windows branding was wrong from the get go, every time I mentioned mates to get a WP, the moment they hear ‘Windows’ you can tell by their faces that they’re not interested, even though they said they might consider it – this is in Australia.
Also, every store I go to here (carriers and others like jb hifi), have totally no WP’s on display, its like they’ve all sold out and the stores aren’t ordering a new batch. No second gen phones have been released here either, and its so hard to find a WP on display nowadays its a joke.

I don’t see Android sticking around for too much longer unless Google makes some major changes for the better, I’ve seen to many users all but throw their old Android phone at me when they come in to upgrade to an iphone or even a blackberry.  I try to offer WP7 as an alternative though.

2015? What it the math beyond such predictions for 3 years out? iPhone isn’t going to be third to anything. I wish it were so, but it won’t.
