John Gruber Talks On Windows Phone, Says Its Definitely Better Than Android

John Gruber, a famous Apple fanboy came to On The Verge show last week. The Verge Editor Joshua Topolsky was questioning about other tech companies that interests John Gruber. John Gruber when asked about Microsoft said that their Windows Phone and its metro interface is great. He also wondered why Windows Phone sales were not great so far and said that its definitely better than Android at worst. He also gave an analogy that if you take iOS, Windows Phone and Android devices and give it to users four years back, most of the people would have picked Windows Phone for its seamless integration with Windows, Outlook and other stuff.

I wasn’t able to view the video, but from the article, it looks great. You probably shouldn’t call him a fanboy though as that designates someone who blindly supports a certain company, which he doesn’t seem to have done here. Fan might be a little less negative, or supporter even.

He still IS a Fanboy! I think it is we Computer/smartphone aficionados that have perverted the use of the term!

A Fanboy, really, is someone who Loves someone or something not necessarily blindly, or inspite of, but sometimes, just because!!

i think Topolosky and others saying that Windows name detracts from the phone are full of it. Windows 7 is a stallar OS, anyone who says otherwise is a flake or just a hater. Calling it Windows Phone 7 just plays off the success of the desktop OS.

I think there is a point to the ‘Windows’ part of the name!

For anyone whom you ask about Windows, (and its unavoidable association with Microsoft), the breakdown would probably be: Love / Hate / Neutral!

Obviously we ‘Love’ Windows and tend to look for MS products/solutions first, then alternatives if the former isn’t satisfactory.

For those that ‘Hate’ Windows (mostly MS), they tend to use Windows/Office grudgingly (because, really, there’s nothing else out there comparable), and then never touch anything else MS made!

The ‘Neutrals’ are (I believe) the largest group, who tend to use Windows (MS) products. They don’t particularly Love Windows, but neither do they Hate it!. Conversely, they don’t really see it as a ‘brand’ that is worth Acquiring either!
They use Windows, ’cause it’s there, but wouldn’t necessarily purchase it if there is a more ‘fashionable’ name out-there, as they seemingly dismiss it out-of-hand (possibly due to the attachment of the name windows???)

These ‘Neutrals’ are the ones that we need to convince that, separate to the standard Windows products that they use because they are Uniform and Ubiquitous, they should actually CHOOSE Windows Phone because it is one of the better smartphone platforms currently on the market!!

I do (or at least I think I do) completely understand Grubers approch to judging things: He just cares about the *user experience* and the emotional relationship between humans and technology. Apple is just the one company that gets those things right *most of the time*; not always – and he knows that. Gruber is just a big fan of the one company that pulled it off so far. We will see others, I am sure.

A fanboy on the other hand is just someone who blindly throws himself into arguments, not because he cares about the product or has thoughts why it is better than other but simply to win the argument.
