Kin One and Two launching May 13th

Good news for those of you who are looking forward to the Kin devices! There’s now word that both the Kin One and Kin Two will be available for preorder on May 6th, and for sale a week later, on Verizon. Microsoft previously stated a May release for these devices in the US, and as yet, there’s not information on a UK release date.

Is anyone actually interested in either of the devices?

I AM… BUT question is how much?

So they could deliver KIN so quickly, but we need to wait basically one year for WP7?

    GREAT.

I suspect complete control over a platform makes it faster to launch, and Kin isn't a particularly complicated OS, and there are no plans for copy and paste, multitasking, installable software etc. It's a very "light" OS, so faster to release.

I don't think many people will be interested in KIN.

    It's a major failure.

The most extraordinary thing about KIN is that there are no apps. Does anyone want a phone without apps? Microsoft was so pig headed about eating its own dog food that it removed all Java functionality from the Sidekick, in order to port it to WinCE and produce the appless KIN.

Because it has no apps, you can't fix its failings. You can't add an Instant Message app, like you could with even the cheapest candy-bar phones. You can't fix its Twitter failings, to enable it to upload photos to Twitter (the KIN can't do that).

And what is that crazy show-stopper 15-minute delay that afflicts the KIN when it sends messages? Why would anyone buy a phone that has a 15-minute message delay?

You've completely missed the point of Kin. Kin is for teenagers, and from school, I know that most like the iPhone because it's pretty and expensive, not for any real reason. Most of them also spend time on twitter and facebook, and not instant messaging.

Well it seems that over 150,000 people would disagree with you…

First, it does have apps, just not an app store. It's also not going to be sold, talked about, or marketed as a smartphone, so apps and the number of them is irrelevant at this point. And there is no 15min message delay, you should go and re-read the information. The kin servers (at MS) are set by default to scan FB and the other networks for updates every 15mins. It's how I have my RSS feeds set, and my email as well. When you send a message it goes right away, there's no 15min delay there, you seem to have the wrong idea about that.

It's not a show-stopper, it's a default setting to keep bandwidth, and thus data plans, cheap to fit into the target market for the devices (which isn't a app crazy user like yourself).

You need to stop comparing it to smartphones when it's not meant to be one.

hmm… Maybe I will get a KIN too if it is available in Asia. But too bad it is not coming to SG…. :(

True, true… but I'm sure Microsoft knows as well as we know how much more important their real, actual mobile offering will be.

KIN might have been easier to create, but they should have focused more on WP7 than KIN, if they are by the same department at Microsoft.

Given how important WP7 and its success is, it's really baffling that Microsoft also chose to spend time and resources on this mini side-project.

I think the delay may also be down to OEMs, with Kin, it's all Microsfts decisions, they don't need to discuss with OEMs what is required, they just do what they want. With Windows Mobile, there's a huge amount of discussion about features, with OEMs like HTC making feature requests, which Microsoft then implement. Without that, there's probably some streamlining.

Also, Microsoft purchased Danger, which likely sped up the development.

I'm not saying Microsoft shouldn't use all resources to make WP7 the best it can be, and make sure it comes on time, but I am trying to at least give some possible reasons as to the more distant release time frame of WP7.
