Kin One & Two Review

SAM_0255 The Kin One and Two are two devices Microsoft made as a cut off Windows Phone 7 phones, and after using these them it seems I might not be much of a WP7 fan after all. The devices released early last month to Verizon Wireless seemed to be a promise of something new from Microsoft. Before I get too personal, let us get into the review.

Package:

SAM_0231 SAM_0240

These devices ship in a very nice black and green cylinder box that is cut in half with a green band holding the two pieces together. When you take the band off you see a host of things other than the phone. The package includes the USB cable for syncing and charging your device. The USB wall adaptor, because having separate chargers and USB cables is becoming a thing of the past. Lastly the manual, that no one ever reads. These all make for a very nice package, and it makes you quite pleased when the device is well presented.

Kin One

Hardware:SAM_0242

The Kin One is a very small device that makes me thing of the Palm Pre. The smartphone comes in an all black and white, pebble shaped form. When slid up, it reveals a very small and cramped QWERTY keyboard that is the only method of text entry, and for people like me with big fingers, it is not ideal. The front screen is a very small 2.6” display that for people that has tried or owns the HD, is a huge step down. The screen also brought me many problems when fighting to see a text massage while walking around in sunny Minnesota. Above the screen is the main speaker, along with two sensors being the light, and proximity sensors. Like the iPhone, the front is very clean, and only has one button that works to take you back, or home.

SAM_0244 The back of the device is an all black and very nicely made cover. It has a nice grip to it, and unlike other devices, it does not hold finger prints. There is a 5 MP camera on the back that in our test takes decent pictures in great lighting, but when in direct sun light or in a dark room, you will have quite an awful image to look at. There is an available flash when you need it, but after taking those images, I cannot say I would really every find myself using it, because it does not give much help in a serious condition.

SAM_0246 Around the device there are quite a bit of buttons. On the top there is not a button, but a 3.5 millimeter head phone jack, for those moments you get in the mood to sign up for the Zune support. There is a large Camera button, that I found badly placed because I kept pressing it to lock the device, and that frustrated me for the most part. There is the lock below the camera button, which is fairly smaller than the camera button. On the left side you see a volume rocker, that nicely blends in with the phones design.

SAM_0251 The hardware on the Kin One is pretty good, but the inside power is better. The phone is running on a 600 MHz Tegra processor that you might figure is more power than the device needs. There is 4GB of flash memory and a 1240 mAh battery that brings decent battery life, but not anything up to HD2 standards.

The device has pretty decent hardware, but not the best for something in the price range. I cannot speak too badly of the build quality, because it is pretty good, and unlike the Kin Two, it does not look like it should be a free phone.

Kin Two

Hardware:SAM_0252

When choosing which of these devices to buy, it is a very simply… What hardware do you want? The Kin Two, being the more masculine decision, has a bigger body, full keyboard, and it even slides out. The device comes with high res 8 MP camera that in my test produces pictures that my HD2’s 5 MP could easily beat. The video quality is suppose to be 720P, and is, but it is surely not worth having a 720P video come out of a Lens that small.

SAM_0261 The Kin Two has a larger screen than the Kin One, but if you know the HD2 or use it, the screen looks like a 3 Inch display. It is multi touch enabled, so you can pinch/zoom and all that good stuff. Around the screen there is a mic, speaker, light sensor, proximity sensor, and more. The camera button is placed on the right side, so if you are taking a picture, it is most likely going to be in landscape mode.

SAM_0260 Other than the screen, size, and shape, the Kin One, and Two are identical.

    Thanks for the review, Wen.

Kin is the forerunner to Windows Phone 7, as they both have similarities.

I don't think Kin does very well with social networking, as its Twitter access is not complete. It can't direct message or ReTweet or upload images to Twitter. The Kin's lack of IM and 15-minute message delay on the loop is also baffling.

There are signs that Kin is failing in the market, as most retailers have it in on the discount rack or clearance sale. Despite being on price discount, you still have to pay the hefty data charges every month, as Kin uses up lots of data uploading every photo you take.

most retailers? Verizon and bestbuy (or authorized verizon resellers) are the ONLY ones selling it in the USA. ROTFLMAO.

For the OP to compare KIN1 ($50) to a HD2 ($200 on crummy network) is absurd, especially when you don't mention battery life

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/WMPerson Wen(WM)

Well I know of quite a few $50 phones with bigger screens…… And Battery life… the HD2 knocks the Kin One, and Two out of the park….
And As of T-mobile being crummy.. where did you here that? With their great prices, great costumer service… And where I live, Great reception and 4G speed's of 3G(coming soon)… I dont know what your talking about. Did you forget that Verizon Wireless doesnt allow Calling, and web browsing at the same time.

          ROTFLMAO.

TM vs VZW coverage is not even close. I've used both in recent years.

Sure phone calls not interrupting browsing (GMS) is nice but it assumes you have coverage. There are MANY MANY deadspots with TM in metro areas and the boon-docks. To pretend TM has any advantage except "cheaper" is whacko.

You seem to us that expression quite a bit there. I'm sure things aren't really that funny.
Anyways, I have yet to see any problems with my T-mobile coverage not only in Minnesota, but in Wisconsin, Delaware, New York, Philly, Ohio, and On my boat in lake Erie. The only problem I have was driving through a corn area from Florida to Georgia.
My connection to 3G is always fast, and when I call costumer service, they always result my issue, even if it takes 2 hours or more.
I am not sure what your problem was, but I love my T-mobile service, and everyone I know (except my friend Cedric who bought an Evo on Sprint) has T-mobile.
So We most all be doing something right.

Look, coverage wise its not even close in the USA TMs << Verizon. Sorry but to argue that is a total waste of time.

Obviously many WM fans use TM because the best WM phone is on TM for the last several months in the USA.

And while TM will be getting a speed boost in many areas within the month (so they say) again that DEPENDS on if you have an actual signal.

I wish you were right 'cause i have two contracts expiring and i'd gladly change one or both to TM if only what you posted were actually true.

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/WMPerson Wen(WM)

Well all I can say is… T-mobile works perfect for me, and my location, and everywhere I go to.. maybe you live out in the woods or something where it would be financially stupid to have coverage due to their size, but i dont know. I dont know where you live.
And we all know Verizon's network is bigger, I have been using both for over a while now.

          • http://twitter.com/ST0808 @ST0808

It all depends on where you are, if you are on west coast and Midwest than Verizon is probably better. ATT has best and now T-Mobile has the second best coverage. I have my work BB from Verizon and personal HD2 (just migrated from ATT for HD2). T-Mobile has far better coverage than Verizon. Verizon has better 3G coverage but their 3G speeds are not much faster than Edge so I don't really consider that as an edge.

I Atlanta, T-Mobile has widest 3G coverage and lot better coverage than Verizon and ATT.

      • Kalif

Best Buy, Verizon and Amazon have all relegated Kin to the discount section.

Kin's poor battery life is a bad omen for Windows Phone 7.

Why does Kin have much worse battery performance than Windows Mobile (HD2)? Kin is not doing much work. It's not multitasking apps. In fact, there are no apps. The OS must not have any optimization.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/WMPerson Wen(WM)

Who knows, maybe its the way I use mine, or something.

"While you might see our review as being late, on the contrary, you should be asking others why theirs is so early, a good review takes time to get used to the device before you can truly give your thoughts and experience on it."

My impressions on the device have not really changed since posting my review. Also, I don't really see your review adding anything new than what others have already written, and you don't really go into much detail about important areas of the phone, such as the music player, text messaging, browser, keyboard, screen, and syncing (both cloud and local).

Regarding your videos not being uploaded to the KIN Studio, be aware that 720p videos are not synced to the cloud; they only sync locally when you plug the device to your computer.

Hopefully M$ is using Kin one and two to hammer out all the bugs and glitches for WP7 releases, I see this as great way to iron out hardware problem for basic phone, social networking and cloud sync functions. I purchased Acer S200 WM 6.5 on release date 10/06/2009 and it had tons of problems. They fixed all those problem after 2 month with a software release.

Hopefully MS learn from Kin one and two and release good product in WP7.

@rush24's review was definitely better than this one

  • iFloss™

Bro you had one major flaw in this review.

You kept talking about the HD2. The HD2 nor iPhone are competitors against this device. It could be argued though that the WebOS devices or the MotoBlur equipped devices are competitors though. But like those devices Social Networking is oversaturated (I owned the palm pre for 3 weeks and loved it but hated the social networking)

I personally believe social networking should be a choice. I hated seeing my AIM contacts in my contact book and i'd hate having facebook notifications on my homescreen (motoblur).

The HD2 overpowers the KIN phones by a long shot, i think that was the only gripe i had with the review.
