Kinoma Play to be anchor application in new Windows Mobile Marketplace

Kinoma Play, the mobile media browser that lets consumers see and hear their favorite media faster, has been listed as one of the anchor applications for Windows Marketplace for Mobile. The recently announced application marketplace 2will be included with all Windows phones based on Windows Mobile 6.5 this fall. Kinoma will demonstrate Kinoma Play in Microsoft Corp.’s booth, #5136 at the CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas, April 1-3.

“Enthusiasts have embraced Kinoma Play as a ‘must-have’ application that shows how powerful the Windows Mobile media experience can be,” said Peter Hoddie, co-founder and CEO of Kinoma. “Windows Marketplace for Mobile opens up users to a new experience where they can discover and experience dynamic applications, like Kinoma Play, on their Windows mobile device.”

“As a creator of mobile media software, Kinoma offers technology that is a great asset to the Windows Marketplace,” said Steve Hegenderfer, group product manager, Microsoft. “We look forward to making it easy for millions of Windows phone users to download Kinoma Play, one of the latest mobile media browsers available for finding and accessing video, audio and pictures.”

Being an anchor app is not enough.

Kinoma is so good at making WinMo “sing” that they need to be bought-out by MSFT, and commissioned to develop the entire GUI for WinMo 7 and beyond.

When I’m using Kinoma Play on my HTC FUZE, I feel like I’m using an iPhone (and that’s a good thing, from user experience perspective). In fact, I think Kinoma Play makes my FUZE look & feel better than an iPhone. It’s so good that I never want to leave the Kinoma experience. I want to stay in Kinoma to surf the web, read my email, and do all sorts of things. Alas, Kinoma Play only is a media browser. So, it’s back to the less elegant HTC TouchFlo3D (yes, Kinoma’s usability and performance is superior to that of TF3D) when I’m not navigating or streaming my media.

And it’s not just the look and feel (though that’s a huge piece of it) — it’s also raw performance. It feels like my FUZE gets a jolt of CPU and GPU performance when using Kinoma Play. Screen rotations are snappy (and elegantly animated), flick-scrolling actually works as expected, and there are no delays in any interactions throughout the app. And all screens have super-smooth transitions that are just fast enough not to annoy, and add to the feel of responsiveness.

It’s like I’m using an entirely different phone when I’m using Kinoma Play.

I can’t for the life of me understand why a company as big and rich as MSFT doesn’t gobble up fantastic firms like Kinoma — who have proven that they can develop world-class user experiences on a very outdated and inefficient platform such as WinMo 6.1 Pro.

Where’s the energy, synergy and leadership in the WinMo space to make game-changing alliances and/or mergers like this happen?

Nice but nothing more than eyecandy… CP surpasses it in almost every way excluding GUI

Obviously, I disagree.

First, eye candy is not to be diminished.

Secondly, performance and usability is not eye candy. It’s elegance.

Third, they innovated how we get information during load times, so that we are not wondering if it’s “working” or if it “registered” a click. Makes it very satisfying to use.

Lastly, they do a very nice job of meshing on-line and off-line media. Taking ownership of an on-line content catalog is a big differentiator with a user’s experience. I’ve not used CorePlayer, but I expect it’s very “do it yourself” when it comes to locating and streaming online content.
