Leak confirms Windows Phone 8 will use the Windows 8 kernel

Breaking out the details of the leak that Pocketnow broke so spectacularly, the news that Windows Phone will use the Windows 8 kernel is both the least surprising and also the most interesting.

According to Pocketnow:

“Windows Phone 8 won’t just share a UI with the next-generation desktop and tablet OS, apparently: it will use many of the same components as Windows 8, allowing developers to "reuse — by far — most of their code" when porting an app from desktop to phone, according to Belfiore. He specifically mentions the kernel, networking stacks, security, and multimedia support as areas of heavy overlap. “

This move by itself appears to solve many Windows Phone issues, including support for advanced networking, full disk encryption and support for business features.

The further implications is that Windows Phone will be able to advance in lock step with the desktop OS, and that it will be easy to port support for accessories to Windows Phone 8.

The leak mentions multiple resolutions will be supported, which I am sure includes out familiar WVGA, suggesting to me current devices will be able to support the new OS.

It could also just means that Windows 8 runs Silverlight and XNA and therefore have alot in common with Windows Phone?

    • Anonymous

no,windows phone will still support silverlight and XNA, but if this rumor is to be believed, then it will also add support for winrt and directX. what that means is, the OS will be still backward compatible with the current software library, but will also support the newer software development platform of windows 8.

I am exited about Apollo running on HD2,, I fear it would not be possible because of so many changes..

    • Anonymous

Why not just upgrade the handset already?

      • Martin Procházka

Well maybe I will have to.. But I just love the way HD2 is.. the possibilities.. push forwards from the devs.. Always excited about what will be next :)

        • Anonymous

why do they concentrate on this old phone? would be interesting what they could hack onto a titan, no? imagine the latest versions of wp7/8, ios and android tri-booting? incredible huh? i dont think (i could be wrong though) that the hd2 would have the ability to do that smoothly

          • Martin Procházka

Well, HD2 is old piece of hardware.. and yet it can do more than any other smartphone.. it runs WM6.5, WP7 and even Android ICS very smoothly.. Sure, hacking Titan would be interesting (and lately surely done) but.. I don’t know.. one you get into it.. It will hold you :)

If the first gen devices are going to get Apollo, then they’ll probably be an XDA developers update for the HD2 pretty soon after.

I hope Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 can run XBLA games! I bet a crazy annoucement is coming at this years E3. 2012 E3 main focus = Windows 8 2013 E3 = Xbox 720 makes sense

i like apple way of updating all iphones getting the update.

i hope microsoft do the same way.
windows phone 8 high device you have to see like (62bit)
windows phone 8 low device have (32bit)

    • http://twitter.com/Xplorer_7 Lukas Greb

Bullshit. Not every iPhone gets the latest updates. And even fewer get all features from the new update.
And Windows Phone 8 high end devices = ARM
Windows Phone 8 low end devices = ARM
Sorry for harsh tone, but it is bullshit.

I’ll assume you mean 64bit, but why?  I don’t know of any phone that needs to access more than 4GB of RAM, which is the main advantage of 64bit.  Out of all the priorities for WP8, 64bit is not one of them.

      • Anonymous

yes you’re right.4GB or RAM is the most important for WP8

        • Anonymous

I’ll assume you are either being sarcastic, or English is your second language, because 4GB of RAM is NOT the most important feature for Windows Phone right now.

WTF are you talking about and what idiot ‘liked’ your comment?  That architecture topic is not apart of any mobile OS discussion.

I’m excited but I hope that means that Windows will be updated yearly. I’m not sure I want to wait 3 years for WP updates.

Mango was an OS update without updating the kernel. I don’t see why they wouldn’t follow that pattern

I don’t think multiple resolutions will be a problem for developers if the aspect ratio is the same for them all; they would only have to provide higher resolution raster files, but the rest should look good regardless.

One thing I’d love to see is the ability to have some tweets as notifications. I’m watching alot of streams these days and they announce when they start on Twitter so it would be awsome if tweets from my “streamer list” came in as notifications similar to SMS.

Exciting times just as I was considering hopping over to the iPhone camp looks like my upgrade will be to Windows 8 Phone instead.

Since they are lowering hardware specs, I think even 1gen devices should be able to get this, minus the hardware dependent features. Hope it happens.
