LG Germany announces new firmware for unlocked devices with Internet Sharing

LG Germany has announced on their Facebook page that they have now made new firmware available for unlocked LG Optimus 7 handsets which enable Internet Sharing. Many uses from numerous devices have been complaining the 8107 update does not enable this feature on their current handsets.

The firmware in version V11h (1.1.8.10), with the current version being V11g (means: 1.1.7.10) .

Hopefully we will see this update roll out to carrier devices soon also.

Now, if only Samsung would do that for my Germany-sourced, factory-unlocked Omnia 7….

The biggest problem with the Omnia 7 is the driver side of the device:

- The WiFi connection works at 400 Kbit/s with a 20Mbit/s DSL connection at less than 1m from the wireless router.
- The latest camera firmware included with the Mango drivers adds a pink hue at the center of the image and increases the image noise in low light conditions.
- Since Nodo the device is subject to frequent reboots caused by badly coded/incomtible drivers.
- Samsung updates are sometimes incompatible between them leaving incoherent registry entries in the device’s registry.

If Microsoft insisted that much in standarizing the platform’s hardware why not building the drivers by their own with source code from the components’ manufacturers to ensure the minimum quality levels are at least reached. That way *some* incompetent hardware manufacturers would be left appart from the software side.

PD: If you want a one-use-only device with no support then Samsung is your choice.

Some interesting points you have brought up there, but:

- I have never tested the WiFi connection; seems to work fine for me.
- I haven’t noticed a pink hue, but I do believe there has been an increase of noise in low light conditions.
- I was having the occasional reboot after updating to NoDo, but that has since been fixed.

I do agree with you, that MS should code some ‘stock/default’ drivers – at the very least they can be used as a reference by the manufacturers.

Many Carrier-branded devices have already received this update several months ago. In fact the LG E900 was the first 1st-gen Windows Phone to get WiFi Internet Sharing/Tethering as an update.

My LG crashes quite a lot using internet sharing, especially if it is running on batteries. If it goes to sleep it maintains its connection to the other devices but not to the internet. You need to switch off internet sharing and switch it back on again. For some reason this takes an age sometimes and if you don’t have a 3G or better internet connection it will say its unavailable. If you are moving about, say on a train, it will also sometimes disconnect devices sharing your connection and you have to wait until you’re back in a good signal area and manually reconnect the wifi. Finally it drinks a lot of power so you either need your phone’s power supply or a USB connection to the PC, which sort-of defeats the point of wifi. Overall, I much preferred the simple tethering you had with Windows mobile. It required a degree in computer science to set up the first time (but only because Microsoft hadn’t bothered to update the UI) and after that it was a lot more reliable.
