List of microSD cards confirmed working with the Samsung Focus

The Samsung Focus has an easily accessible microSD card, but that does not mean every microSD card will work reliably with it.

If fact, with many cards will appear to work, and then all the data disappears after a soft reset.

I've read that Microsoft is working on a patch for memory card inconsistency (which includes the focus), and it should be out soon.

I've been using a Sandisk 16gb Class 4 with my Touch Pro 2, hoping that I don't have to get a different card :S

  • CM

Patriot 16 GB Class 4. I've been using it since launch day with no issues.

Settings – About – look for the Reset button. Easiest way to handle it, but note you lose everything currently on the device, settings and all.

Same issue, on restarts it will forget everything.

    • Dave

Same here. Works fine until phone is restarted, and everything is gone, and my computer would not recognize the phone anymore.

    Hello Jeff,

Have you had any issues with the SanDisk Class 4 32GB card? I also ordered a SanDisk Class 2 32GB card this week and received a Class 4 32GB card also today and I'm wondering if I should try it or try to get the class 2 card. The bad thing is that if the card does not work then it is useless in anything else so I'm trying to find out if there are known issues before I break the package seal.

PNY 16GB Class 4 is working so far. I've gone through several power downs (goodbye) and it powers on with no data loss or problems.

    • X12R5G

Update – still no problems. 10.17GB available after loading lots of pictures, videos, and music.

I got my Focus for Christmas and I installed a Kingston 32GB Class 4. It's working great. I'm very thankful for this list.

I've bought a Sandisk 16gb MicroSD card for my HTC Trophy 7. I m terribly sorry to inform all of you that it "isn't working" – that is the phone does recognise the card with it's storage – but the phone itself becomes real laggy (unlocking home screen, swiping through programs and people, etc.).____The Sandisk partno. is: SDSDQM-016G-B35

Gee, Microsoft….GREAT way to try to get people onto Phone 7. I have a Focus. I like Phone 7 overall. I don't like that I can't add any apps or really customize it since installing the microSD will wipe out everything and reset it back to factory default.

What I'm REALLY pissed about is that Samsung still has this FAQ up describing how to install the card as if it's OK now. http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs

I read somewhere on an MS forum that the Sandisk 8gb would work….so I just bought a Sandisk Class 6 32GB MicroSDHC. How could I go wrong, I thought. I bought it on eBay and the sale was final on this item.

Will I ever be able to use it, or by the time they solve this "issue", I'll be able to get an "approved" Class 10 32GB for half the price…..or pay twice the price to get the words "Phone 7 Approved" stamped on it?

Should have bought the freaking Android version. Thanks AGAIN, MicroSoft! Edit

Microsoft isn't responsible. They told the manufacturers not to put in the slots. Samsung went ahead and did it anyway. It is cool that Microsoft, then, is trying to help by solving a problem they did not create.

      • loadingzone

MS isn't "fixing the problem". Phone 7 is no doubt written to crash non-"approved" cards. The so-called fix is for MS to remove the code crashing the cards and for the carriers to stop trying to overcharge us for every little thing they can.

This was a marketing move to force consumers to "only used approved micro SDHC cards for sale (at insane prices) from the carriers". The approved cards will end up being quality (non-Chinese knock-offs) ones made by Sandisk, Kingston, etc. private labeled for the carriers. The only difference will be that Phone 7 will recognize the private labeled cards and allow them to work.

The fact that Samsung did put in the slot means they had good reason to believe from MS that it would work. And really, would anyone other than an iPhone lemming even buy a smart phone at the top end which was 8gb and not user-upgradable?

I like Phone 7 a lot. I know the apps will come as will patches and upgrades. I'm fine with that. MS is trying to launch a new mobile os. Using Apple's tricks from the past is not the right way to do it.

If Samsung and others come out with near-identical Phone 7 products in 6 mo which suddenly have 16gb or 32gb on-board to force people to upgrade, Phone 7 will be gone in a year.

Some people never learn though…like the idiots who will buy Verizon's iPhone 4 next month on a two year contract only to have it replaced with the iPhone 5 (or whatever they call it) in June.

Finally talked to someone at Samsung who admitted knowing about this. Walked me through install on Sandisk 32GB Class 6 2 weeks ago. No issues so far……

  • GetReal

I bought Patriot Signature 16GB Class 4 from newegg.com for the Focus. The reviews on newegg.com praised this card for the Focus. When I installed it, though, I encountered exact same problems others are complaining about: sync drops to a crawl after 8GB and the phone is very often sluggish to the point of being almost unusable. Also saw a couple of reboots but the data stayed. I would recommend people to buy only cards that are backed by AT&T for Samsung Focus. Even cards that appear to work great according to reviews may work lousy for you.

The major problem I had was instability of the phone. It would randomly reboot, and sometimes it would come back with the default OS configuration, without my data. I had to reboot it yet again, and all my data was there. On the XDA-Developers site, there is a discussion on how to help fix this issue, but it requires a dev unlocked phone at this time. Microsoft really needs to address this issue, amongst others.

I installed the patriot signature class 4 16 GB card from Amazon 2 days ago. i now have 22.12 GB total storage, with 8.85 GB free. no slow downs or other issues yet . I did do a hard reset and the 3-button format process described elsewhere.
