Marketplace developers start getting first pay-out

wp7_payouts

It seems Windows Phone 7 marketplace developers are finally starting to receive some cash, with Andy Beaulieu, dev for DroppyPop tweeting that he has started receiving pay-outs from Microsoft.

He also notes however that Microsoft’s reporting is still not saying anything about money being sendt out, meaning developers will basically have to keep an eye on their account to see if any cash shows up.

It is likely the first batch of pay-outs will not be very impressive, but in about 3-6 months, when the Windows phone 7 installed base hits 5-10 million, developers should be a lot happier.

well, at least this gripe can be put to rest and devs have no excuse not to start writing apps now.

      They better hurry though: http://goo.gl/okUh7

"I haven't even seen one of these phones, but people who have seen one tell me that it's actually a very nice device."
        what an idiot

    • Dave

You're kidding, right? I would say waiting over three months to get paid is a pretty good gripe.

I don't understand why Microsoft who are so pro developer take so long to pay them?

      • bobk

From beginning, MS told devs the date payments would start. So devs shouldn't say they weren't warned.

5-10 million sounds optimistic imo. Sure M$ have shipped 2 million, but they still haven't announced how many have actually been sold to consumers.

    • Bob

Out of the 2 million shipped, what do you think is a realistic number for units sold?

      • Max

Don't you know – the carriers dump the WP7 phones in the Hudson River, just to appease the monstrous sweaty Steve Ballmer :)

      • http://www.facebook.com/franz.cruz Franz Josef Cruz

My guess is around the 1 million mark. call me pessimistic, but I've yet to see anyone with a WP device.

        • lkl

I'm not calling you pessimistic, but I agree I have seen anyone yet with a WP7 phone other than the sales person who work at AT&T. This is not good.

        • zzz

You guys don't get it. With 2 mil or even at 5 mil units out there, it will be rare to find WP7 in the wild because they are spread all over the world. And so many phones look alike from distance that you can't even tell it's WP7 or not.

      • zzz

Probably near 1.5M. The rest are in the stores or being manufactored. It's less than I had hoped for before the launch but it's okay because, after having used the OS for a while, I'm confident WP7 is good enough to overcome the headwind. It will just take some time.

    • arnehelseth

Those 2 million were 4 weeks ago, and its not inconceivable that the majority were sold to consumers considering stock levels were very low for most of last year.

      • http://www.facebook.com/franz.cruz Franz Josef Cruz

Hope so, because the more M$ sells, the more pressure will be put on them to get updates out faster (to keep customer satisfaction high), as well as bring in more apps to the marketplace :D

        • zzz

That's why the CDMA launch is important. It will give a big boost to sales and accelerate the word of mouth marketing this OS needs most.

When a good app is written payout should be good. the plus side is it will give incentive for folks to write better apps I have no problem paying for a good app.

"It is likely the first batch of pay-outs will not be very impressive"

Jeez, I know it's true but chill on the negativity for once WMPoweruser… always undermining our beloved OS. If the developers did a good job being developers, then they will be rewarded as such. I see many people dedicated to reviewing everything they use and giving feedback on the respective sites online, and a lot of people (majority) don't know about long-tapping to even get to the reviews in the first place. I'm sure apps are now being consumed a lot more than in December, and certainly a lot more than we think now.

  • kennyken747

Exactly. People don't realize Android is on each of the 4 major US carriers, is free, and beat MS to the punch as the first viable alternative to the giant that iPhone was at the time. And that iPhones are literally fashion accessories. If you want the world from brand new OS early on, don't be an early adopter. Just like with Android and the G1, or iPhone without the App Store.

WP7 is bringing some great things in the future updates, and hopefully we also get multitasking late 2011. Well, multitasking is already enabled and put to use in the core OS but hopefully it gets enabled for 3rd party apps.

An undeniable possibility is that with the 2nd generation of devices we will get front facing cameras and cross-platform videochat with Kinect and Live. That alone is enough to entice many consumers. Hopefully if and when this happens, they will market it heavily, as Kinect is already popular and has sold very well. Given everything we've found that contributes to the rumor and the fact that they'd be stupid NOT TO, it's safe to say I'll look back at this post when MWC comes around and start laughing because I was right.

On to the apps. Goodness gracious, what a relief to go into the Marketplace and see games at the top (I'm a gamer) instead of ugly and buggy utilities that are ultimately used to make your phone a Frankenstein of sorts.

Listen and listen good. I am a developer (about to get into WP7 development btw). When socket support and direct camera feed API (etc. etc.) comes for developers, it is a DONE DEAL as far as us getting A++ PLUS apps .We already have quite a few, but if you're a developer you can probably guess why: Those new APIs + C#, Silverlight and Visual Studio + Microsoft services = software galore. Developers are happy and users are happy. Imagine the possibilities with the two APIs I mentioned plus more that Microsoft has already committed to bringing, most likely around the Mango update. You all need to look at the broader picture here. Oh, and speaking of the Mango update, which hasn't even been fully revealed yet (could even have multitasking), we already know for sure a new IE is coming with HTML5/SL/everythingweneedinamobilebrowser functionality.

A high percentage of WP7 users are happy, and I don't mean to sound like an elitist or even a tyrant but some of the complaining users and bloggers *ahem* need to take a chill pill and just think about what's coming to them. Early adopters will always find something to complain about, but regardless I HAD to get that long rant off my chest.
