Marketplace hits 25,000 apps

Marketplace has just hit another major milestone, crossing the 25,000 app mark in just 8 months and 10 days. It took the Android market considerably longer at more than 15 months after launch  to cross the same mark, and took only 4 days longer than the iPhone app store

Leaving aside the concerns about the flood of spam apps, it is still agreat achievement and a sign of confidence in the Windows Phone 7 ecosystem.

  • Yo

but still lots of them are missing and some apps that are free on iOS and Android are not free for WP7 users

    • http://twitter.com/Xplorer_7 Lukas Greb

There are also paid ones on Android/iOS that are free on WP7, like last.fm or Shazam in the beginning.

      • Aceofspades25

Yeah… but there’s no excusing games being 3x the price!

        • http://twitter.com/Xplorer_7 Lukas Greb

Well, actually there is an excuse for games being 3x the price.
WP7 Games are not to expensive, but more likely iPhone games are to cheap. And that´s bad for devs.

      • Aceofspades25

Yeah… but there’s no excusing games being 3x the price!

Although the 12% of apps in the books and reference section is a cause for concern, in a world where numbers seem to imply everything, spam apps don’t matter. Both Android and iOS are polluted with them, yet they boast their app counts proudly.

  • OsHisham

yeah true. almost 98% of the so called apps…are actually rubbish. really disappointing. i’m trading in my htc mozart for an android phone.

    • http://fxfp.com/ Alex F.

Ha-ha-ha, but in Android Market 99% of apps are rubbish!

Be prepared to “Force Close” early and often.

Hahahah… I think what Google Did was copy the exact code for Windows Mobile and make Android and add the animation effects. Even WMobile 6 didn’t crash that often.

    • Bazpants

Enjoy your Android, get off Wmpoweruser then!!

Really? Really? That is every mobile platform and Android is probably the worst. Look at Apple’s Top 25 apps and look at WP7 — compare how many are missing on WP7 and make your choice that way. App # is a silly way to look at things.

Gizmodo even complained about Apple’s iPad marketplace: http://gizmodo.com/5817075/apple-ipad-now-has-about-100-awesome-apps

You’re a liar and a stupid little troll. You don’t even own a Windows Phone. WP7 market place has a far higher percentage of quality apps than Android. Not only is Android’s market a confusing, fragmented pile of shit, but 99% of apps on Android suck.

      So take your trolling elsewhere.

      • Oshworld

f* off! you want me to show photo of me with my HTC Mozart? u r the stupid one! i didn’t deny WP great Facebook integration which i like most. but Marketplace is a total garbage container!

        • Sam

Andriod marketplace is garbage that stinks!

          • Anonymous

just like OsHisham, a troll that needs a bath immediately!

      • Aceofspades25

        Nice aggression control there!

Even if that is true, that still leaves 500 high quality apps in the marketplace. Every app store has the same problem of being mostly sub par apps, but those apps don’t show up when you search for them due to low ratings or never gaining much exposure in the first place. Android is much worse for this. Wallpapers count as “apps” in the android marketplace and at that it contains around 200,000 apps. Also there are far less quality checks on submitted apps, for example, there are many apps that simply redirect to a webpage. Apps like this are banned from windows marketplace. At the current rate of growth in the windows phone marketplace (grorwth rate doubles every three and a half months) it will make 100,000 apps by the years end.

It’s like saying the internet is crap because 99.999% of webpages are crap.

Have you ever seen the Android marketplace? Jeez, talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire. Home of 100,000 themes listed as seperate apps, apps infected by malware, apps that only work correctly on specific devices…

Have fun! We’ll see you back here next week.

  • Avatar Roku

You have to keep in mind that about 5,000 of these apps include a free trial which would have required 5,000 additional apps on iOS and Android. So really Windows Phone 7 has the equivalent of 30,000 apps already.

    • Anonymous

Yes but then you have the kids book apps that were reviewed here a couple of weeks ago where each book (there are many hundreds) is an app while on other platforms there is one app and the books are purchased in-app. So I would say the it’s a wash at best.

      • Avatar Roku

It is not a wash at all because iOS and Android also count books as apps. And Android also counts wallpapers as apps. So not only is it not a “wash” but WP7 software growth is even more impressive than anyone seems to understand.

No they don’t. They count some as apps (when they’re delivered that way) but many offer a single app with downloadable content. There was a children’s book publisher featured here a couple of wekeks ago who was releasing hundreds of books on WP7 (a good thing) each as an app. That same publisher has a single app on iOS.

          • Avatar Roku

OMG what is wrong with you? We have exact figures on this. Books make up the same percentage of WP7 apps as they do iOS apps. According to iTunes under iPhone apps the “Books” category has 41,550 paid book apps and 6,975 free books listed as apps. That represents about 10% of the total iOS app Store. According to WindowsPhoneApplist books represent 10% of the total WP7 Marketplace.

an MSFT changed their rules to allow less of these type of apps to get in the Marketplace and….drumm rolls…they contacted the developers to work with them on how to better submit their apps.

What do u say now, Apple apologist?

          • Anonymous

That this was the right thing for Microsoft to do.

I think 40% of all apps are now RSS readers, there has been a major influx of these crappy apps. all looking the same

Very comforting to know that some of these apps will also be working on Windows 8 Tablets.
