Massive Windows Mobile 7 leak: Two versions, 720P screens, 1.3 Ghz processors

WMExperts claim to have an inside line to Windows Mobile 7 development, and have dropped some massive bomb shells, which we will deal with in multiple posts.

The first is that there will be two versions of Windows Mobile 7 – a business and media version. The Media version will feature "Microsoft Zune Phone Experience" and the Business version is meant to be the base version skinned by OEM’s like HTC.

The business version will feature the ability to access live data on your PC and in the cloud, and do this collaboratively. You can even take a photo on your phone and embed it to the document directly.

Office Mobile is meant to be a completely new and impressive experience.

The Business version is said to be coming as an upgrade to the HD2 in October or November this year.

WMExperts claim the minimum resolution for Windows Mobile 7 (only called 7) will be WVGA, with resolution topping out at 720 p

The Business version is said to look like:

Think TouchFLO (slider tabs) meeting up with a stock SPB Shell (lots of information on multiple screen) mixed with a very well integrated message and app launcher — almost a ‘fun’ BlackBerry interface. Seems like the stock shell is more like a really good BB theme than iPhone or Android.

Media edition will feature HD video, a Zune-like music player, and streaming media.

Media edition will support:

    • Silverlight

    • Mediaroom

    • XBox Live (possibly gameplay)

    • Facebook and Twitter interfaces (similar to Xbox), possible right on the home screen.

    • Zune Music integration

This version is still adding features and is expected to arrive only next year.

The new OS will feature “Orion” cloud-based assisted GPS that supports multiple-tower signal detection and trilateration (think Google’s My Location service in Google Maps), IP resolving and also WIFI location.

Planned performance for an initial lock (cold start) is targeted at  less than 1 second and would find you within 300 meters. A hot or warm start is targeted at less than 0.25 seconds and would track you at less than 10 meters.

It is expected only bits and pieces of both OS’s will be shown at Mobile World Congress, but more of the more complete Business Edition that Media edition.

Seems like the more interesting one is the media edition which is not coming to HD2 :(

I dunno, sure it's got the eye candy that everyone seems to die for but what's stopping the pro/business version from being able to run that through some sorta unlocki or download of the shell? If anything it seems that's the version that will ship with many different custom shells from OEMs like HTC. They've spent so much time on Sense and so on, I doubt they'd just drop it even if the media UI in WM7 turns out to be super cool and stuff.

even if it's "not coming to the HD2" dosn't mean it won't run on the HD2, we'll be mixing and matching over at xda and quite possibly call it "windows phone ultimate"

      • http://intensedebate.com/people/Foamy Foamy

What if you want features from both? i could understand having either a business focused one or a media focused one but not having a version with everything is idiotic. hopefully xda will fix that.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/mohsen7x8 mighty

yeah I'm hoping we can get functionality from both in one place and that place had better be the HD2. I hope it can handle the supposedly heavy media edition.

I think the media or what they're calling the "zune like phone" etc, will have everything. The way it sounds to me is that MS is basically making WM like Windows on the desktop with the higher end version having everything and the lower end one just less.

So if you want the business stuff it should be in there, It would indeed be silly for MS not to have everything in their top end version.

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/mohsen7x8 mighty

Except, the high end one here seems to be the media version not the business one :-?

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Lennard Lennard

being consumer oriented isn't a bad thing. Windows Phone Ultimate, I'm looking forward to cooking you.

        @ FOAMY,
It almost sounds like MS is planning on releasing its own phone a la nexus one with the media version, and letting OEMs go and play with the business version and add their own media software.

Assuming that is not the case however, I'm sure that in typical MS fashion there will be an ultimate edition announced for the person that wants it all.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Foamy Foamy

but the multiple OS versions only works on PCs where you can install whichever suit you best. you cant do this with mobiles and they're usualy all so different it would be very hard to find the perfect device with the best OS. It's possible MS will let you do this with WM7 which would be awesome as long as it's not too expensive. They could also let you upgrade your OS from either business or media to ultimate.

          • GP007

I dunno if it's really that hard. If your phone has enough RAM to run the higher level eye candy and stuff then installing or turning on that feature should be possible. If MS plays it right the business version could have all the media stuff in there but just turned off, OR, you can install them (if the OS is moduler enough, which would be a big bonus).

            • http://intensedebate.com/people/Foamy Foamy

the impression i get from having more than one version is that you can't use the features from the other. at least not without help from MS or xda.

            • http://intensedebate.com/people/Lennard Lennard

what? where's the business in that? where's the money in that logic? I don't see it. for a company that's looking to make a profit, I would be looking for ways to make money. having features just turned off, means customers can just easily turn them on and I get no revenue….

this is why I don't believe they would do it that way.

      • LordDeath

And xda-developers will release their own Ultimate Edition with all features from both editions. =)

      • John

Having 2 different versions is a DUMB idea. It adds confusion for consumers, especially when cell providers promote both versions without pointing out the differences. Or somebody likes one phone model but it has the business version when he wants the media version. Im on the fence about OEM skins.. since the homescreen adds brand recognition. I think businesses who have fleets of these things should be allowed to disable features they dont want their employees using.

It seems to me that the non-touchscreen version is going by the wayside too. Not shedding any tears here..

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Lennard Lennard

you're crazy, haven't you realized that windows mobile have always been more than one edition? think standard and professional.

      • http://www.voulezvousparler.com Bugblatter

I thought they'd already realised their mistake on the desktop OS; why are they making the same mistake on WM? Don't make me choose between business functionality and multimedia functionality, I want and use both.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/Lennard Lennard

you want them both? that's why you should go with ultimate. I personally don't think what they did on the PC is bad, because of this they're making dmoney. their liqid cash is at a good place.

when Balmer said Windows Phone, I guess we really didn't see the big picture….

Still purporting this crazy notion that the HD2 will officially get WM7, eh? Keep dreaming, I'll buy you a cookie if it happens.

Moving on… great to see Microsoft has brought their stupid OS editions to the mobile arena because, let's face it, everyone loves the confusing array of Windows boxes when you walk into a computer store.

I've heard many, many simpleton consumers wax lyrical about how confused they are by the multiple versions of Windows OS for their computers and now they're doing it to their phones as well? I personally wouldn't care because I know what I want and can choose, but I know plenty of people who were totally turned off upgrading to Vista or even W7 because they just couldn't be arsed to pick the best edition for them.

I'll hold off on commenting about the rest, it's all pure speculation and I hate how people are presenting these as facts. Still wondering where you got confirmation that the HD2 will get an official WM7 upgrade… somebody's Twitter feed or somebody's personals as on craigslist? Pfft…

      • The Dark Lord

I am not getting it, I hope they are not doing two versions. Why would they do that??????? Why can't they pack all of this into one phone????? So if I am a business user I cannot watch HD movies on the airport or with my kids over dinner???? Screw that … I want all of this in one phone or they can go and F#$%$%$% themselves … No way I am going back if they pull this crap on us … All other phones have Twitter and Facebook integrations … again so if I buy the business version I cannot have that … YGTBSM! No way they will win over users with this shit!
