Microsoft already using Unity3D engine on Windows Phone 7

Developers, both big and small, have been complaining about lack of access to 3rd party graphics engines such as Unreal Development Kit or Unity3D to create high performance cross-platform games.

Now it turns out Microsoft has been using the Unity3D engine quietly in their own apps, a tacit acknowledgement that a graphically intensive game such as Kinectimals needs more that XNA.

Of course we have heard already that Microsoft intends to bring native code access to developers eventually, although the form this will take remains to be seen, and of course also when it will be coming.

The news however does open up the possibility of Microsoft allowing development houses with high profile games to use their preferred game to make Xbox Live games much sooner than this – here’s hoping!
