Microsoft Awarded With Patent On Metro UI On Windows Phones

Microsoft was today awarded with key patent on Metro UI on Windows Phones, Panoramic UI in specific. They may be part of the upcoming version of Windows codenamed Windows 8 as well. Take a look at the images below.

Microsoft was also awarded with patent for user specific predictive soft-keyboard. Here is the abstract of the patent,

USER-CENTRIC SOFT KEYBOARD PREDICTIVE TECHNOLOGIES

An apparatus and method are disclosed for providing feedback and guidance to touch screen device users to improve text entry user experience and performance by generating input history data including character probabilities, word probabilities, and touch models. According to one embodiment, a method comprises receiving first input data, automatically learning user tendencies based on the first input data to generate input history data, receiving second input data, and generating auto-corrections or suggestion candidates for one or more words of the second input data based on the input history data. The user can then select one of the suggestion candidates to replace a selected word with the selected suggestion candidate.

Hum, this is an interesting patent development with patent #20110202876 (User-Centric Soft Keyboard Predictive Technologies). This patent cuts through the heart of every Smartphone OS predictive soft keyboard out there. If the patent wars really explode into an all out necular war like it seem to be heading, by the time the dust settles, most of the Smartphone OSs out there will be left with a skeleton of their former selves. Microsoft has always contended that “software” is where the power lies in all modern technologies, and they’ve been at it longer than anybody else.

Bravo to Microsoft on getting the Metro UI patent. The Metro UI clearly has some thought put into it and very different from traditional UIs. It is certainly well deserved.

thats what really really really seperates WP7 from everything else. The gorgeous UI…so thats the most important thing to secure. Happy its done with.

All good, but ppl plz realise this is a patent for the panorama interface. Panorama apps include the hubs and facebook, etc. This is not a ‘metro’ patent. Does anyone know if the live tiles (which is more the core Metro UI experience than the panorama) is patented also?

I wonder whats gonna happen to google’s app store now that they changed it to look more metro? Microsoft secured the patent so this is another one android is infringing?
