Microsoft claims victory in updated HTML5 speed test

Microsoft claims the hardware-accelerated HTML5 rendering in IE9 in Windows Phone 7 mango is the fastest implementation of them all, but along the way some people have complained both that Microsoft was comparing Mango against an old version of iOS, version 4 versus the upcoming iOS5, and also that iOS can reach up to 31 fps, faster than the 25 fps Microsoft demoed at MIX11 for Mango.

In todays demo at WPC 11 Microsoft addressed these issues head-on, not only doubling their own rendering speed to 50 fps, but also comparing the speed against the latest beta 3 of iOS5.

For now the WP7 team holds the crown, and they are clearly proud of their work, which should continue to motivate them to keep Windows Phone 7 on top.

Developers can now write HTML 5 web apps that are fast like native apps.

    • Anthony S.

Faster HTML5 processing. The CPU won’t be taxed trying to process graphics as well as all other code. Mobile HTML5 graphics would be processed by the GPU while the rest would be handled by the processor. For example, if Pandora Radio decided not to rely on Flash and built an HTML5-based site, they could do so and not worry about graphics optimization since the GPU would do the heavy lifting. Comparably, devs could also program HTML5-based games that would work on all modern smartphones. Mango would have the leg-up here in speed.

Good for them but I thought iOS was running at 20+ fps in earlier tests. Are Apple going backwards?

    • Anonymous

That was for the reading test.

    • Anonymous

Apple will be running at 32fps.

  • Anonymous

Since iOS 5 is still in beta and assuming Microsoft got a copy legally (i.e. through the developer program) wouldn’t they be in violation of the NDA?

    • Anonymous

I don’t think Apple wants to publicize in court that IE9 smokes Safari.

      • Anonymous

Meh – Apple could just say that this was beta software, not finished software and no one should consider the benchmark meaningful. Anyway they wouldn’t need to take Microsoft to court, they could simply suspend their developer accounts.

        • Guest

Apple can say whatever they want. The information was provided specifically because previous critics said they should have included current betas.

Suspend MS’s developer’s account over this? Grow up.

          • Anonymous

Previous critics don’t matter one bit, the NDA is an agreement between Apple (in this case) and the developer. Criticisms don’t give the developer the authority to violate the NDA. Apple has (as have many other tech companies) shown in the past that they will toss people for violations.

You often see Paul Thurrott dance around Microsoft topics on his radio show with Leo Laporte because he is under NDA and doesn’t want to loose access. And Leo has said specifically that he won’t join the Apple developer programs so that he doesn’t have to worry about running afoul of those NDAs on his shows.

          • Guest

Previous critics do matter, hence the reason MS tried to accomodate their concerns. You have yet to show that this action violates Apple’s NDA. Unless Apple determines that and pursues it, this is all just a strawman you created.

Not surprised that you troll Thurrott too. What alias do you use there?

          • Anonymous

The criticisms are outside of the agreement between the developer and Apple – there existence doesn’t change the terms of any NDA. My question was hypothetical, but based on the the types of things that are typically included in NDAs for beta software/firmware – no public benchmarking, no public display, etc.

I love it that you accuse me of using an alias, yet you’re the one hiding out here as a guest.

          • Guest

You mean the terms that you so far can point to?

On the alias thing, you’re the one indicating that you tune in enough to even refer to Laporte as “Leo”. I don’t recall seeing rbgaynor there, so my question is logical. And despite your redirect attempt, I don’t see a denial.

          • Guest

            can >-> can’t

          • Anonymous

Apple do not publish there NDAs, nor are they visible outside of the developers only areas of their website – sorry.

I refer to him as Leo because he refers to himself as Leo (his blog site is Leoville). Last time I checked there is no need to log in for a radio show or most webcasts.

          • Anonymous

So getting to the point – you believe MSFT violated an NDA. Dastardly MSFT does a bad deceitful thing again….

        • http://twitter.com/Xplorer_7 Lukas Greb

rbgaynor I see you trolling on nearly every topic in here….
          Please stop it -.-
Nobody cares, or agrees to what you say.

          • Guest

He’s lonely and nobody else will talk to him.

        • Guest

That’s ok. Microsoft can stop Skype and Office development.

      • Anonymous

Meh – Apple could just say that this was beta software, not finished software and no one should consider the benchmark meaningful. Anyway they wouldn’t need to take Microsoft to court, they could simply suspend their developer accounts.

    • Trollsrasshats

If it was, assuming of course that the NDA explicitly precludes this and MS used their own development account and not someone else’s, wouldn’t that be an issue for Apple’s legal department?

      You really are boringly predictable.

      • Anonymous

The NDA deals specifically with benchmarking (a very common thing for beta software).

        • Trollsrasshats

Like I said, IF this is a violation and IF MS used their own account and not someone else’s, then wouldn’t that be AN ISSUE FOR APPLE’s LEGAL DEPARTMENT?

Did the use of caps improve your comprehension?

          • Anonymous

The point I raised was doesn’t this appear to be a violation of the NDA, not who at Apple should pursue the matter. Shouting in your reply doesn’t make you seem any less uncomprehending.

          • Trollsrasshats

And the point I raised is if that’s the case, isn’t it a matter for Apple’s legal department and not self-appointed legal watchdog and troll rbgaynor?

          • Anonymous

I simply raise an interesting point for discussion – I’m not appointing myself judge, jury, and jailer. You still haven’t added anything of value to this discussion.

          • Trollsrasshats

No, you simply tried to take attention away from the subject matter by adding your own extraneous element. I consider correcting your bs to be a public service.

          • Anonymous

If it’s so extraneous why do you feel the need to post? When you say you’ve corrected my BS you give yourself far too much credit, you haven’t been on topic at all.

          • Trollsrasshats

            Already answered. Correcting your bs.

          • Anonymous

Given that the only BS you’ve identified is the stuff you’ve made up I would say your effort was pretty much a waste.

        • Guest

What NDA? There appears to be a developer’s agreement, the contents of which are confidential (trust Apple). But a version that was published in spite Apple’s wishes doesn’t mention benchmarks.

          • Anonymous

There are NDAs for access to things like the iOS and OS X betas. In fact, even though it appears the next release of OS X is imminent Lion developers are still under an NDA. Microsoft has done similar things with NDAs, although it’s usually much earlier in the development stage and they usually end sooner.

          • Anonymous

Agreed – it is quite possible that this other site flew below Apple’s radar.

          • Mark

Or that neither is in violation except in your mind.

          • Anonymous

That is also a possibility – the fact that it may or may not be a violation is why I posted the question. Sadly most of what we got instead were trolls and fanbois.

          • Bwatson

Take your stupidity elsewhere. This isn’t a forum for trolls who show up to bash and then complain when they’re not taken seriously.

          • Anonymous

Thanks for proving my point about the trolls and fanbois.

You must be stupid if you haven’t realized MS is a iOS dev.

I’m well aware that Microsoft is an Apple developer, that doesn’t guarantee the beta being used in his video came through the developer program (although it seems likely it would).

Ok but won’t 50fps drain the battery? Just get it high enough to beat iOS5…

    • http://twitter.com/Xplorer_7 Lukas Greb

No. The better the hardware acceleration, the better the performance, and the lower the power consumption. IE is just working way more efficient.

    • Anonymous

The other phones are maxing out the cpu to render at the framerate they do, as is windows phone.

You could however forsee it being possible to make reletively simple animations were the phone can comfortably animate them at 60fps without maxing out the cpu/gpu. These same apps would use more power and render slower on the other phones.

So does it mean that in Mango final Release the Speed of wep Page rendering will be doubled to 50 fps? Because ich habe Mango Beta on hd7 and it Shows 27 fps on the fish Website..

Amazing, I can’t wait to get my own WP7!

  • http://profiles.google.com/blueandwhite89 Daniel Purdham

Funny, Microsoft was far behind but with each day they are becoming closer to par with iOS and Android. In many areas WP7 surpasses iOS and Android. Im eager to getting rid of my iPhone for a samsung mango or nokia mango handset.

    • Anonymous

At the current rate of WP7 development, I expect MSFT to fully exceed both iOS and Android in 6-9 months and then blow them away.

      • http://www.gadgeterija.net Denis Jelec

Idealistically, that would happen in a period of at least a year. Realistically, more than two years.

        • Ben Chia

And . Personally, it happened in a few months.

          • http://www.gadgeterija.net Denis Jelec

Of course. Perhaps I wasn’t clear, was thinking of leveling (or beating) with other platforms in terms of marketshare. :)

      • http://profiles.google.com/blueandwhite89 Daniel Purdham

Agreed, they have basically caught up from nothing (iOS and Android been around for what? 4 or 5 years) in only a year and with Mango they are putting themselves into position to pass them this coming year. If people are buying a phone for the future they would be smart to go with WP7 because the only direction this OS is going is to the top.

Are you on the Mango beta build? If not, you have the browser currently on devices which is based on IE7, not the IE9 build shown here.

    • http://twitter.com/mbiebusch Marc Biebusch

Did you tried the normal desktop demo? http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/performance/fishietank/
This seems to be a slightly different version from the demo shown in the video (other layout optimized for mobile devices, take a look at the position of the framerate)

    • http://twitter.com/JohnnyWestlake Johnny Westlake

This is not from the public developer Mango BETA. This is from a far more recent internal Microsoft build of Mango.

    • Oshalabi9

Maybe the processor is different than in the hd7. The build and hardware on the demonstration is probably different than what you got too.

Are they testing on the MS HTML5 site again with the fishes? Are there no 3rd parties HTML sites that is neither belonging to Apple, MS or Google to have a fair comparisons?

The Beta is for testing, and the final version should be as they are showing here in the video – they are still tweaking things for the final release and this is just proof of their progress.

Woot woot. So sick of being criticised for using Internet explorer. For a long time I’ve felt let down by Microsoft, with the way they’ve let IE get so out of date compared to other browsers. I’m glad they’ve been putting all this effort into IE9

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but to get the correct version of this for mobile devices, not the main desktop one, make sure your WP7 device is set to view mobile pages, and then go to: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Mobile/Default.html

Unless those applications were written in html5 and they are using the gpu I don’t think it matters. Besides the notification bar always bring those background applications on the top bar. Not conclusive that it would make a difference, nice try though.
