Microsoft Design Director Steve Kaneko Talks On Metro And Future Design At Microsoft

Microsoft Design Director Steve Kaneko recently had an interview at Microsoft with Joshua Topolsky of The Verge. In the interview, Steve Kaneko talks on his 20 years at Microsoft as a designer and his various design roles he played at Microsoft. He was confident about Microsoft’s current design language and how well its progressing on their road map. He also said that Metro design language may not scale down to all cases such as Microsoft Office where there are complex options to be revealed on screen.

I’m curious to see what Microsoft intends to do with Office for Windows ARM devices. Already Microsoft has said that Windows ARM devices will not be able to run any kind of x86/x64 apps.There had been reports that Windows 8 ARM will be Metro-only, though Microsoft later clarified that desktop apps will be allowed. I mean, if they are already going to recompile Office for ARM, they must be mindful about the Metro style, right?

Great interview.

Anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock for the past few years would see it’s pretty obvious that Microsoft has turned a new leaf in the direction they are taking (and want to take) the company.

I’m excited for when the unification does eventual happen throughout most of their products, I really hope they nail the inconsistencies they’ve had in the past… some of which still exist. And for God’s sake, pick the best player – I think it’s time to bench WMP.

For example, Zune on the WP7 and 360, but WMP on Windows 7. Simplify – pick one player and stick with it on all platforms. Integrate it into all the relevant systems and products and keep it consistent.

I think Windows 8 is still going to undergo some heavy cosmetic and usage changes, I hope they live up to the ‘hype’.
