Microsoft launches WhatsMyPhoneStyle promotional website in India

pr_242 It seems Microsoft is pretty committed to winning over less developed markets.  We have already seen their hilarious video promoting the functionality of Windows Mobile phones.  Microsoft India has now gone one step further, producing a website which recommends Windows Mobile phones to consumers based on a 5 question questionnaire.

The WhatsMyPhoneStyle.com website is an online campaign that allows users to find out their style of phone by taking part in a quiz. Once users respond to the quiz, they will be shown the models of the Windows Mobile phones that correspond to their personalities. The users can also purchase their style of Windows Mobile phone online or make a call to the provided phone numbers to know about the phone’s availability nearby.

WhatsMyPhoneStyle.com also provides a social networking feature as its users can share their experience on the usage of Windows Mobile with each other.

Microsoft India has partnered with local gadget website CafeGadgets.com and the call centres of the corresponding OEMs so recommendations can quickly turn into sales.

I cant comment on the accuracy of the system, as when I did the quiz I was recommended a HTC Touch Viva or an Asus M930.  I guess the Xperia I am using is wasted on me after all :)

What did the site recommend for you?  Let us know in the comment section.

Less developed markets??!! Sorry but I think that as far as mobile devices are concerned you are quite wrong. India is among the markets where the latest & coolest mobile devices make an appearance much before they do in so called developed markets like that of US etc. And its also one of those markets where phones appear without getting maimed just because some carrier think that they might be able to fleece some more $$ out of its customers if it just disabled some features of the device!

Volumes are still very low however, for smartphones at least. In China for example, with more than a billion people, sales of all smartphones are still counted in low 100 000′s.

I dont have numbers for India, but the market is not very big yet.

I don’t have the numbers myself but just think for a moment; why would manufacturers release their latest & coolest phones in a market like India if the sales figure of such phones is lower than that of a market like US? From what I’ve seen by the devices offered by carriers in US, smartphones are just few, mostly simple dumb devices are pushed out & taken by people. Only recently smartphone offerings have started to pump up in last couple of years when iPhone made its appearance.

I disagree. I've now moved to New Zealand, and although the mobile market here is way, way smaller than in India, alteast the latest devices are available here (although in very small and limited numbers)

For instance, NZ was one of the first countries to get the iPhone 3GS and the HTC Magic, while I still hadn't seen any official announcement for either of those devices in India. Not to mention the fact that India is still stuck on 2.xG even though 3G has been officially launched last year. Meanwhile, most developed countries are on 3.5G/4G. I mean, what's the point of buying these new phones when you can't take advantage of cool stuff like crystal-clear VoIP, video calling, viewing HQ youtube videos without lag.. etc. No wonder the MS site suggests using outdated phones like the Viva.

Finally, officially launched devices, especially in the WinMo sector are incredibly costly because of unfair taxes + no carrier contracts. Yes, carrier locking is bad, but atleast the hardware is available for much cheaper prices. Besides, anyone savvy enough to use a WinMo would already know how to unlock the device.

One good thing though is the large second-hand market through which one can get some decent phones for really cheap prices. (super cheap, if you have the right contacts ;) ) Unfortunately, the same can't be said for brand-new devices.
