Microsoft Netherlands: Mango coming mid-October, dual-core phones to be supported in the future

2011145ts-sonneveld-microsoftMaarten Sonneveld, Mobile Communications Business Group Lead at Microsoft Netherlands has spoken to Nieuwemobiel.nl in the wake of the Mango launch.

He revealed a more specific date than the usual Fall, saying "Windows Phone Mango will sometime in the fall available, probably around mid-October.”

He also said he expected updates to existing handsets will come before actual devices, which make sense given that we have been told new Mango handsets will be released throughout the year rather than in a wave like last yet.

He acknowledged that Windows Phone 7 currently had a small market share, noting that when attending cell phone shops as a mystery shopper sales staff steered him away from a Windows Phone.

"Recently I visited with a five-member Dutch team as Windows Phone mystery shopper a number of telecom stores, to experience how Windows phone was picked up by the telephone business. I asked a salesperson to a device where I can open Word and Excel Sheets. He advised me to get an Android device. "

"When I asked if Windows phone was a good choice, the seller told me that I should not choose a  Windows handset. "Maybe it’s a because Nokia will soon participate," said the salesman. We hear often that people expect that Nokia will make the difference for Windows Phone. "

“It is true that we only have a small market share, but it is our goal next year is growing very fast. Last year was an initial period. "

Speaking to the future, he notes the range of specs and price points will grow.

"We will continue with the hardware requirements of Windows Phone, but we must look to the future with dual core processors, but also with simpler hardware. It is an asset that the Windows Phone experience on cheaper devices is feasible. "

Well, I want my Mango update before I go back to school …

  • Skillit

I doubt carrier will change that behavior, they just make too much money from bloatware kickbacks given they little incentive to push other platforms.

Also in mid-october there will be plenty of quad-core phones available in the market, Apple can afford to stay behind the cutting edge but MS can’t

I don’t understand the rush to have 18 core cpus in a cellphone if the OS is written properly you shouldn’t need that much power just to open a app on a phone.

      • Anonymous

the time you have one in your hands with much faster loading times, less battery consumption and no graphical glitches on games you will understand…

        • zzz

OK, but are there such phones yet? I see many dual core Android users still complaining about laggy interfaces and terrible battery time.

          • zzz

OK, GS2 browsing seems pretty fast (which benefits from dual core more than other apps I think) but how do you explain so many people still complaining about the same old issues Android has had for some time? I find them plenty in amazon. It seems Android is still a bit slow and buggy considering the hardware improvement. Will be interesting to compare GS2 against Focus-2 side by side when it comes out hopefully this fall.

          • http://chmun77.myopenid.com/ Jimmy

Well, like WP7. Google is also improving its codes. Is not an overnight job. Please bear in mind that Android is designed to be multitasking from the start. With Mango coming with added multitasking capabilities, we shall see how well WP7 Mango will perform on long run. For the very least, I do not see any performance issues with Honeycomb. So, in the future, we will see Mango VS Android Ice cream.

thanks for the video. can’t deny the capabilities of the dual core when used in the right way.. love it when the pages render super fast..
hope that we get dual core phones soon.. even from other manufacturers so that we can really see Wp7 or Wp8 real potential with mango

          • OoO

            Why wait?

Every WP7 device is essentially a dual core device (CPU + GPU), because even the base OS is using (and depends on and is designed in this way) the GPU to render the UI (list scrolling, page transitions, zooming, etc are all done by the GPU on WP7). But it’s not an SMP (i.e. all cores are the same general purpose cores) system like Android devices.

On Android the GPU is mainly used by GL applications (games, …) and the UI rendering for the most part is done by the CPU. That’s why Android sees a performance improvement on dual CPU core devices.

Windows CE (the kernel running WP7) supports SMP like Android but someone (read MS) has to port Windows CE to these SOCs which is time consuming (and a duplication of effort now that the Windows 8 kernel is being ported to ARM SOCs anyway – looks like WP8 will be using an adapted version of the Windows 8 kernel with current WP7 UIs and libraries running on top).

So what you are waiting for is actually triple core support but I doubt you will see a lot of performance gains in most applications or the OS itself.

        • Anonymous

That’s certainly not the case with Android, because it can’t keep up with WP7 on more powerful hardware.

          • Anonymous

really? have you tried galaxy galaxy s II and wp7 side by side compared game performance, battery and load times?

Try a SGS 2 before you commit to such statement. SGS 2 has broke the Anddroid’s barrier of being lag in every aspects. SGS 2 is fast and responsive. Web surf experiences is now on par, or even better than iOS / WP7 since it is Flash enabled. Last but not least, it has apps that are FREE (with ads of course) as compared to other OSes… And it has a 2MP front facing camera!

And yes, I will take SGS 2 anytime, as compared to the current WP7.

          • Hatorade

You said like an efficiency expert, WP7 runs smooth and quick on h/w thats almost 2 years old while Android needs new h/w each month and more CPU’s, memory, GPU bumps to overcome lag and performance issues with each new update. How many times have I heard incompetent developers say, oh just throw more h/w at it to make it faster. What happen to writing good, clean and robust code? At least MS is making a good attempt in keeping hardware changes minimum while giving customers a long term choice on h/w. Most people wont run to the store overnight so that their new Android candy upgrade needs the next gen h/w. All these comparisions people talk about and no context!

          • http://chmun77.myopenid.com/ Jimmy

Well, developers are always hungry for more powerful hardware. But if what you saying about lags and performance issues are so true, why Android has already surpass in iPhone sales? I bet iOS codes are more efficiency than Android, shouldn’t Android phones sales be dropping?

So u see is not always about code efficiency. If that can be overcome by h/w, why is it an issue? Do you expect game companies to stuck on the old h/w too?

Consumers go for better faster h/w and that’s nothing but the truth. And fact is that SGS 2 is able to overcome the lag issues and from there onwards, Android will go even further. Plus, if ice cream sandwich is released, which is soon too, things will be interesting.

          • Anonymous

You are clueless. It is ALWAYS about optimization. Now please be quiet, you are making a fool out of yourself.

          • Anonymous

You are an idiot. It is always about optimization of code because consumers couldn’t care less about having dual cores. They care about having a quick responsive phone with the best out of the box experience. I dare you to name one Android device that has outsold the iPhone. Apple couldn’t care less about the market share because guess what? They’re making way more money than anyone else.

Again, consumers go for the best out of the box experience. If it’s fast, looks nice, and does everything they want they couldn’t care less if it’s single, dual, or even quad core. Android fanboys should really stop commenting on future OS updates they know nothing about. You can’t know what to expect with ICS until Google lets you know.

          • Maddog17

The reason why android is selling more than IOS, is because IOS is more expensive than android devices and SGS 2 IS $800 U.S. without a contract and about $300 on contract when it comes to the U.S, at that rate they wont be out selling anything but HP webOS

          • King

I’ll take both. The Samsung focus was pretty much a port of the galaxy s android phones. I’d be willing to bet that a Galaxy S II variant will come to the windows phone line up either this fall or shortly there after

            > SGS 2 has broke the Anddroid’s barrier of being lag in every aspects

This says it all. Android is such a hodge podge it actually takes a dual processor to bring up to basic-task performance level of other platforms. That is an embarrassment not an endorsement.

As for “Apps are free” yuck. The generally poor app quality that infests android may be in large part to the fact that free-ness. The great thing is though that there are even ad – blockers are android. I love that openess but in the end, if devs don’t make money they will continue their half hearted android efforts. I use all the platforms extensively and I haven’t found a single app on Android that is better or even to the level of its iOS counterpart but several in wp7 already that I like much better.

There won’t be any quad-core phone in 2011.

I’m happy they know and are publicly mentioning that carriers are themselves pushing people away from WP7, maybe some action to prevent such bias will be taken.

  • majg

so, is there a solution for sales folk to ignore WP7 in the meantime? This was the same problem with the Zune here in the states. Best Buy et al would stear folks away from anything but iPod. Yet MS did nothing to work this out.

  • Ewabeach Girl

Yeah that’s how it was when I was trying to get my lg quantum at AT&T. They kept trying to steer me towards an android and when I said no to that a few times they mentioned the iPod. They had nothing good to say about wp7 but I ignored them and got it anyway and I loved it :)

  • zzz

Surur, your title makes it sound like dual core phones are arriving in October. The article just says Mango is coming in October and they are also working on dual core support. Doesn’t necessarily mean dual cores are due in October, does it?

    • Anonymous

In fact, Maarten says nothing about Microsoft working on dual core support.

“We blijven voorlopig bij de hardware-eisen van Windows Phone, maar we moeten in de toekomst kijken wat we kunnen met dualcore-processoren, maar ook met simpeler hardware. Het is een aanwinst als de Windows Phone-ervaring op goedkopere toestellen haalbaar is.”

      Roughly translates to:

“For now we’ll stick to the Windows Phone hardware requirements, but in the future we’ll have to look what we can do with dual-core processors, but also with more simple hardware. It’s would be great if the Windows Phone experience could be achieved on cheaper devices.

  • Anonymous

he doesn’t say dual-core phones are supported in Mango. “but we must look to the future with dual core processors” doesn’t mean that are in Mango timeframe. I hope so, but he’s not saying that.

    • http://twitter.com/danrivhor Daniel Rivero Horie

This is just what I thought, he sounds more like saying that dual core support will come AFTER Mango not with Mango

BTW, Paul Thurrot is looking bad each day with Mango news. Remember his source said there’s no way MS will deliever it this year? What a clown. Glad I stopped wasting time on his site early this year.

    • http://chmun77.myopenid.com/ Jimmy

Well, things are still unknown. How can you be so sure that MS will be able to deliver on time, given with the bad experience with NoDo? So, as a benefit of doubt, maybe he will be right too?

      • zzz

Remember, Thurrot said THERE’S NO WAY we will get it this year. I’ve heard enough from MS about “Mango by Fall” recently to conclude that’s simply not the case.

I don’t have any more “benefit of doubt” to give him. He’s been wrong so many times and, worst of all, a crybaby with some agenda. IIRC, he has made exactly two real “exclusive” WP7 stories this year that everyone else had to link to him for publishing: the “No mango this year” piece and the “Verizon WP7 by end of January” piece. We all know how the verizon piece turned out. And now look how the mango story is turning out to be. When are you folks wake up and realize Thurrott is a hack?

As for NoDo, if you go by what MS had actually said (“NoDo in March”) instead of what bloggers threw at you, it wasn’t as bad as it seems.

      • Anonymous

NoDo was a learning experience for Microsoft. Many carriers and manufacturers had to learn exactly how to execute it and from that experience I would say that it is more than likely that Mango is coming this autumn and winter for all Windows Phones.

  • zzz

“He also said he expected updates to existing handsets will come before actual devices, which make sense given that we have been told new Mango handsets will be released throughout the year rather than in a wave like last yet.”

That … confuses me a bit. I’d expect new devices to be out first because carriers want you to buy a new device and not just wait for an update. Then again, the reality that there will be VERY FEW that bought a WP7 device that will be able to upgrade when these come out might change that approach a bit.

Also I’d be very surprised if we didn’t have any new devices released before November. That’s really late in the year to release, especially since Mango will likely reach RTM long before that.

  • Wim_Hoek

The fact thet mango supports dual-core cpu, has not been sad in the original dutch article.
In the original dutch interview Maarten Sonneveld from Microsoft Netherlands says, that Microsoft has to look in the fure what they can do with dual-core cpus.
And that Mango could be out mid october.

  • Jai

BRING DUAL BATTERY DURATION! (< USEFUL)

  • http://www.facebook.com/drentherik Erik Drenth

Thanks for quoting from this interview I had with Maarten Sonneveld on thursday! Great that you picked this up! As others have pointed out here, Sonneveld was not confirming that dual core phones were coming. He was discussing other platforms, and only mentioned it as an option Microsoft should look at in the future.

For the other readers, it may also be good to know that the Mango for The Netherlands not only means WP7 getting an update, but it is also the first official advent of the system to our country. Contrary to the current version of Windows Phone, Mango supports Dutch. English language phones are sold in our country, but there hasn’t been a large marketingcampaign. Hence selling WP7 isn an easy thing to do, as Sonneveld experienced. He expects this to improve with a Dutch language version – as may well be true.

    Kind Regards,

    Erik Drenth
