Microsoft phasing out Metro ‘code-name’

For 2 years now the word Metro has been synonymous with Microsoft’s modern, cool and minimalist design language, first on Windows Phone and then Windows 8.

Now, according to Mary Jo Foley from ZDNet, Microsoft is trying to stamp out the use of the word, both inside and outside Microsoft.

A spokesman told Mary Jo

We have used Metro style as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines. As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a broad consumer dialog we will use our commercial names.

Mary Jo has been able to confirm that the move has nothing to do with litigation or trademark infringement (yet), leaving the move to de-emphasize the code name, at the very time when it has permeated most Microsoft products, a bit of a puzzler.
