Microsoft says Skype for Windows Phone coming soon

In a Microsoft interview with their Skype division, Skype’s VP of products, Rick Osterloh  has renewed their promise to bring Skype to Windows Phone soon. (after 1:10 mark)

He notes after the 2:30 point that he is working with deeper integration with Microsoft products, including Windows Phone, but it is expected that the first version of the app would not benefit from this feature.

The product seems to have been delayed bizarrely by the Microsoft purchase a few months ago, but hopefully when it comes it will be good.

I’m not holding my breath. They have been saying this about Skype and Photosynth forever. First it was wait till Mango, then it in Fall 2011 and now it’s “soon”. I like WP7, but I am sick of MS treating a loyal customer like me as a third class citizen. I get laughed at because I have to borrow someones iPhone just so that I can use Photosynth, a MS service, or when I have to borrow an Android phone so that I can skype my parents, another MS service. I have already decided that I am switching to Android. There is nothing wrong with WP7, there is everything wrong with how MS is treating me. At least Google or Apple know how to treat their users. Can you really imagine Google or Apple releasing something on their competitors platform first and leaving their own users hanging for over a year? I am leaving WP7 and might just come back if MS ever gets their shit together. In summary, I love WP7 but hate how MS is treating me.

Are Skype and Photosynth THAT important to your current phone needs, though?  Or are you just upset because we’re not getting these first?

      • Anonymous

A bit of both and the fact that I would like WP7 to catch on, but I am upset that MS doesn’t seem to realize exactly how much damage giving away apps to other platforms is doing to the state of WP7. If I am going to get MS services on other platforms, people  don’t need a WP7. They might as well buy an iPhone/Android and use the MS services there PLUS other services not available on WP7. When one of your main weaknesses is lack of apps, you don’t start giving away your apps to other platforms making them even stronger.

As a loyal user I want MS to treat me as a first class citizen and bring all the goodies to WP first so that we can at least show off our phones. Apple users rave about Facetime etc. What exactly do we have to rave about? It’s them raving about Photosynth and not me a WP user.

You may have to look at things from MS’s perspective.  Microsoft’s challenges are not just in the phone business.  It is also in the software services business as well.  MS can keep their services to themselves but if they did, Apple and Google would just make their own version of it.  Now you have a situation in which MS is not only behind in hardware sales but no one would need their software services either because Apple and Google made their own version on their already popular mobile devices.  At least this way MS can profit in terms of service usage and visibility (mind share) by releasing apps on more popular platforms.

MS has an OS who’s claim to fame is integration.  Not only are features of the phone integrated but they integrate well.  The down side to this strategy is the implementation may take a little longer than an OS that just throws apps on the home screen and that’s it.  If what your friends think about your choice in phones is that important to you and you’re tired of being laughed at, by all means switch and regain your position with the “cool” crowd and have fun with your new apps.

          Good luck.

There’s things you’ll like and not like about any platform . . . . there will always be some feature you wish your phone to have, but isn’t available yet . . .

      • http://bravesoul.myopenid.com/ Bravesoul

But at least not the main cores features. And the problem is, other platforms offer more features than WP, why will consumers choose WP then?

It depends on the user which phone and ecosystem works best for them. Windows Phone users report a higher satisfaction score than most Android phone users. Apparently, Windows Phone users like what they have, so in their minds—at least for the time being—Windows Phone was a good choice for them..

Can’t wait. This was suppose to be a Christmas present last year! :)

Never used Skype.  Have been using Google Voice for over a year and a half and digging it for the most part, I haven’t really found a need for Skype.  But as someone with a vested interest in the MS ecosystem, I’m curious to see if Skype’s integration and feature-set will be impressive enough for me to switch.

Wont see integration into WP7 until Apollo….watch smh

Unless it comes in an earlier update, then probably, but when you do, it will be the best around.

That’s useless information… “soon” could mean anywhere from a month to a year! They might as well not said anything.

If Microsoft simply declared a release date, that would make everyone happier than being left completely in the dark.

Wait wait and wait…. Windows Phone is full of waits. By then, other OSes already more and more advanced than Windows Phone.

I just bought my wife a Windows Phone. A move from the Android she was using. I figured this was the ultimate non biased test.

She admit it was better looking, faster, battery life is still to be decided on.
But one thing she always complains about is the lack of certain apps. Skype is one of them.

I told her there are over 50,000 apps in the store, but the ones she was used to on Android aren’t on there yet which sucks for people moving to the platform. I hate to admit it, but it is a big point for people switching over.

It is unblieveable that we still don’t have Skype after almost a year.  How could we blame some major banks, airlines and other companies for not releasing WP apps.  This is plain lame
